Monday, 12th May 2014 After breakfast this morning, the few of us were ready to leave Lake Toba to embark on our long journey to the city of Medan. As advised by Berend, the helpful owner of our homestay, we decided to enter Medan via the market town of Berastagi. With frequent stops along the way, this would make our long journey less painful and more eventful. We took off to Simarjarunjung, the highest point along Lake Toba where ginger tea and toasted bananas were served at a hotel's café. The drizzling rain did prevent us from venturing outdoors which would otherwise afford a good view of the surroundings on a clear day. The cool winds of the mountains was best appreciated with a nice brew of ginger tea, a specialty from the highlands. Another 60 ... read more

Sunday, 11th May 2014 The 3 of us spent the earlier part of our day taking in the beauty of the morning skies as the sun rose over the horizon of Lake Toba. The lake presented itself as the perfect antidote of peace and quiet - a travel wishlist for city dwellers like us. Our idyllic breakfast consisted of both Indonesian and Western favourites. These were served at 7.30am at the balcony of our room. Every breakfast set we ordered came with a nice serving of fruit platter to start our day on a healthy footing. While waiting for the rest of the folks to join us in the afternoon, 3 of us went through a long trek around Tuk Tuk Town. The full circuit took a good 3 hours to complete under the hot sun. ... read more

Saturday, 10th May 2014 We were missing out on 1 passenger as our Valuair Flight, VF281 made her final descend at the modern Kuala Namu International Airport in Medan. WX had unfortunately missed her flight this morning and it was decided that she would be travelling together with CC & HQ on the following day. So it was left with the 3 of us on day 1 of our programme as we started our long journey from Singapore to Lake Loba. After what must have been more than 40 minutes delay at the Medan customs, we hopped onto the car which would bring us to our destination in about 5 hours. An hour on the road later, our driver dropped us at Restoran Bahagia for our delicious Nasi Padang lunch. The various dishes were neatly laid ... read more

Geo: -7.83075, 112.697I returned to Bukit Lawang from Banda Ache as I had left my bike there, and I wanted to stay longer in the jungle. I've made some fantastic friends here and I love living in the jungle strangely enough, it's a beautiful place next to the Bohorok River.Once again I meet up with great local friends who take me around villages and local houses and it truly is a whole different experience than being a tourist and hanging out with other westerners. I've a couple of friends that are keen for me to stay and even go to the extent of taking me round plots of land that are for sale that I could build a house on and live in Bukit Lawang. Although I love it, I've too much traveling to do so ... read more

Geo: 5.55, 95.32My first experience of the Boxing Day Tsunami 2004 apart from seeing it on the news, was in Tangalle in Sri Lanka. The devastation and heartbreak encountered is beyond belief and now I find myself in Banda Aceh which was the worst hit of all the places affected.I had arranged with a friend from Bukit Lawang to meet one his friends, a Becak driver however on arrival he's broken his ankle and sends another friend to meet me at the bus station which was kind. His friend instead will take me around for the day to visit the many sites and places of interest and I had an enlightening visit packed full of information and reality. In the early morning of Boxing Day 2004, a 9.3 magnitude earthquake struck just off the western coast of ... read more

Geo: -7.83075, 112.697Stuck in the jungle Baby... yep that's me. Bukit Lawang has been incredible not only for the jungle and orangutans... the people, the villages, the cultures, the scenery, the mountains, the rivers, the flowers and fruits, the many animals, there's so much to see, do and get involved in that I've found myself staying much longer than I anticipated but it's all part of the adventure.I love being involved in local culture and love the fact that I'm invited everywhere with the friends I have made here. I'm not shy to explore and the be out in villages in the middle of nowhere on my own, normally via a motorbike that I've borrowed... all part of the fun. The shouts of 'bouley, bouley' go up to mark my arrival which basically means white tourist, ... read more

Geo: -7.83075, 112.697It took me a few days to cycle from Lake Toba via Pemantangsiantar and Medan to Bukit Lawang but the roads are crazy, really fast and furious with all sorts of obstacles and challenges along the way. I've been forced off the road several times with buses overtaking trucks on narrow roads, they give you no option but to get out of their way, dodging the potholes and other bikers! So it's been a fun start to cycling in Indonesia but on the plus side I'm always amazed at the people I meet along the way and the kindness of them although they can't believe I'm traveling out here on my own.Permatangsiantar and Medan were both cities with really heavy traffic and I didn't hang around too long although Medan had a fantastic Central ... read more

Geo: 2.60835, 98.9346The ferry from Melaka was straight forward and an extremely calm journey, very smooth which I was relieved about, maybe I'm finally getting more used to the ferries. On arrival I found a local shop and bought an Indonesian sim card for my phone so I had some maps and was welcomed by my warm shower host at the shop.I followed him out to my accommodation which turned out to be a room at the back of an English school, and despite the long day it became apparent that I would be expected to join in with classes as a native English speaker which isn't strictly 'warm showers' purpose. Thankfully I just took it in my stride and I ended up participating in 5 or 6 classes with the kids plus a couple of ... read more
