It’s not often that I write a blog about one specific place, it’s not my style you could argue. I like my tale to encompass a larger geographical range, if possible. Not to get your hopes up, this one isn’t any different. But the pictures are of one spot only and that spot is called Tangkoko National Park, well the official name is longer, but I think Tangkoko will suffice. Why just one spot? Because, I didn’t do anything that was worth taking a photo of until I got here, which incidentally doesn't mean that there wasn't anything worth taking a photo of (a better person than yours truly would have found ample opportunity to use the camera, no doubt presenting you with a mesmerising glimpse of everyday life along the lesser travelled roads of Sulawesi). ... read more

The Togean Islands are white beaches, turquoise waters, swaying palm trees, coral reefs and jungles. They are strange rock formations sticking out of the water. They are friendly locals and interesting wildlife. And until recently they were not too easy to reach, which always is good to keep out the hordes. But times are a changing and the gateway to the Togean’s, Ampana, now sports an airport. And airports mostly mean one thing: more tourists! The hordes haven’t arrived just yet, but the locals are preparing for them. Resorts are popping up like mushrooms, and the amount of boats servicing the various islands are increasing. It was off-season now, but still I was surprised by the amount of travellers. Luckily they are spread out over the various islands and resorts, so at any given place there ... read more

Sulawesi’s roads will leave you shaken like a Vodka-Martini. They are bumpy, twisty and narrow. Consequently short distances take a very long time. It’s a good thing the scenery is extremely pretty or else it would be quite a bore getting from one place to the other. My destination was Tentena in Central Sulawesi. My point of departure Rantepao. Rantepao, of course, is where I last left off in Indonesia, about 9 months ago. Naturally it is where my new journey will begin. Obviously getting to Rantepao involved some Indonesia travel, let alone getting to the country in the first place. Let’s boil it down to a long flight with long stopovers, a short flight, a night on an uncomfortable bench at Makassar Airport and a long day bus to Rantepao. That about sums it up. ... read more

This place is part of the endless islands named "Tukangbesi Islands" off the coast of the southeastern part of Sulawesi and does not receive many tourists. I caught a ferry from a town called "Bau Bau", the place is just a tipical small fishing village on the the coastline but what picked up my eyes in this little town was, just walking around the port while waiting for the ferry to depart for my destination, that inside a creek there were schools of tropical and colourful fish of different varieties and it was something that has never happened to me before. Ferry was about to arrive and I got myself ready to embark on it. The view of the pier was really pretty with all the fishermen boats anchored to it forming a row along it. ... read more

I had always wanted to see Whale Sharks in the wild for a long time. When my friends told me she saw a few in Gorontalo a few weeks ago, I could not resist going. There was no guarantee that these Whale Sharks will continue to be in the area for a long time. Thankfully, my travel buddy, Nova, decided to come along. Off we went, leaving Jakarta to Gorontalo via Makassar. Given the time difference between Jakarta and Gorontalo and the transit in Makassar, it was late afternoon by the time we reached Go Scuba Dive Center. I had to miss the check dive that afternoon. In the evening, we were joined by a few other divers from Bali including our dive guide, Sammy. We were told that we should get ready at 6:30 am ... read more

The only way to claim that you have dived the world, is to dive , one dive site at a time! Leslie has two weeks of school holidays before starting serious school exams...and Tiffany is already back at school in South Africa....so the boys are back on the road, and under the water! I have already dived in few places around Indonesia, doing Pulau Weh, Gili Trawanggan, Komodo and even Bali. So for Indonesia, North Sulawesi was still on the list. You may have heard of Lembeh, world class muck diving. You basically dive on a black sandy bottom, meeting little creatures that you will only find here. There is also Bunaken and the wall diving. To complete the triangle, you have at the top north tip of North Sulawesi the islands of Bangka and less ... read more

We arrived at Makassar airport to the usual utter chaos of an Indonesian airport. We'd done our research and knew there was an airport bus that took you to the city centre so had booked a hotel there. We showed the name of the hotel and address to the woman at the ticket booth, she screwed up her face then read on to the address and reassured us the bus would go close to it so we bought the ticket and boarded the bus, showing the hotel name and address to the driver, same reaction -he seemed to recognise the road name. When all seats were full the bus set off but soon hit terrible traffic, road works were going on and only one lane of the dual carriageway was open. Despite this, traffic crushed into ... read more

Four nights in Paradise? Well perhaps not paradise but pleasant none the less, there is a mosque opposite the island which is a little annoying at 430am, the lack of running water and power during the day kind of sucked and the steamy mosquito filled nights were terrible but for $25 a night full board who am I to complain. The first full day we visited Malenge Island hoping to see some wildlife, there aparrently is some there we just didn't see any, the jungle hike was extremely hot and comfortable although the guide cracked a few coconuts open so we could have a drink. Finally we reached the other side of the island and popped out at an eco Resort where we had lunch and a lot of h2o. We then headed out to Hotel ... read more

Departing Tentana at 630am was inspired even if it did rain, as traffic was light as we climbed down out of the mountains, the roads were much better along the coast and the views were often stunning. We arrived at Marina Cottages around 11am and checked in before arranging our ongoing boat travel to the Togean Islands. The day was hot and muggy and I spent the afternoon having a nap and reading a book about Nazis before having Nasi surya goreng for dinner washed down by many Bintang besar. I slept well before being dragged out of sleep at 430am by the call to prayer which went for a full 40 minutes, the faithful must have had trouble getting up this morning. Vegetable omelette for breakfast and then the full solar eclipse began, unlike yesterday ... read more

Eggs on toast for breakfast then off to Ke'te Kesu for some very impressive traditional homes, granaries, a white buffallo, a friendly dog and ofcourse more human bones. Next we visited a number of other similar sites at Sangalla, Tampangallo and Suaya villages before visiting the Kambirra baby graves. Now that was a macabre site they carve a hole into the side of a fast growing breadfruit tree and place still borns and infants in the hole then cover the hole with burlap, eventually the tree grows and the hole seals. We then returned to Rantepao for lunch I have to eat at westerner cafes to get a vegetarian meal which is more expensive. Tonight I may have seafood pizza before bed. Today is our last day in Tana Toraja so we visited the market which runs ... read more
