Gilly T! On the 9th we got the ferry across to Lombok, Lombok is the island to the right of Bali...its a lot less developed, full of palm trees and full of long haired guys looking for love... So the ferry crossing wasn't bad, despite the ferry looked like it was about to sink! the toilets were the worst I had ever seen! and so small it was nearly impossible to squat!!!!!!!! ugh!! I feel sick just thinking about them. We were told the journey to Gilly Trawangan which is a very small island off Lombok would take 4 hours.....9 hours later after 2 boat rides and a bus ride we arrived...tip for anyone thinking of going, take the fast boat from Bali, it takes 2 hours!! Our second boat ride from Bang Sal port ... read more

Now we are going to just basically go on and on and on about how great Gili Trawangan is. It is like heaven, paradise. I'm not sure if the contrast between here and Kuta makes it all the better but this place is lush. We got to spend 6 days in Paradise. We met some people who had arrived and ended up spending their whole time in Indonesia here. We found people who had come and never left and now work and live here. It's so nice and chilled with beautiful beaches. The Journey Before we reached Paradise we had to go through hell. We basically decided to save moeny to do the journey ourselves. We had heard awful things about the ferry journey and we weren't really looking forward to it. The ferry was ... read more

Just chillin... Asia » Indonesia » Lombok » Gili Islands By Nessy and PeteMay 27th 2007 The Gili Islands 'Gili' just means islands in Indonesian- but these three Gilis deserve their name. They are literally three small islands off the coast of Lombok where you can go to pretend you're stranded. We spent two weeks here- diving, snorkelling everyday, reading in our hammocks (we found places to string them over the water in the mangroves!) and drinking lots of arak and rice wine- bottles at 1 pound a go! Dogs are banned onn the island so cats run the place and there is no motorised transport- horse and cart only!! We saw w... read more

Indonesia... The land of beaches, sunsets, snorkelling and pineapple pancakes! The Gili Islands are three tiny jewels off the West coast of Lombok, which is the next Island over from Bali in Indonesia. After a 6 hour ferry ride, with blaring Indo-pop and sub-zero aircon, a rather hairy minibus ride through Lombok, and another small boat ride, we made it to Gili Air. Ended up staying at the “party bungalows” of the island, which consisted of just us two foreigners and a whole bunch of chilled out locals! Awesome sunsets set to a reggae beat and a Bintang (the local brew). Next off to Gili Meno in search of turtles. We were rewarded on our very first snorkel with two, extremely large and old turtles! We both couldn’t stop grinning. Tom laughed so much his ... read more

Hey there earthlings, hope you're all well? I left you in Bali after the birthday party, from where we embarked upon a little voyage via coach, bemo and boat. It was a little tricky as we had to get into a little boat to get to a bigger one, when weighted with a 20kg backpack on is a challenge I'd rather not face again. Still, we made it onto what I call a mini sailing ship, enough for 12 people plus a very friendly crew. There was a lunch already waiting for us and the top deck was a mock beach, so you could lie out and listen to the waves...so relaxing. The only bizarre scenario amid this tranquility was when a video of 80s karaoke songs was put on for about half an hour, with ... read more

One hell of a ride. I don't know how I will top this last adventure. I am now bouncing around the Gilli Islands, which are unreal. Yesterday morning we did a morning dive at Sunset point and saw a 2 meter white tip reef shark just chilling at his reef. We watched as this amazing creature in his element glided through the ocean and circled his reef from about 10 feet away. The shark was curious and came by for a close look at us and then had what seemed like a nap on the ocean floor. We also saw some sea turtles down there. Then That same evening we dropped in for our first night dive, It was a full moon and the visibility down there was awsome. We saw sea snakes, Lionfish, Scorpionfish, ... read more

With a big delay, the bus to denpasar arrived at 22:00. Immidiately got asked ridiculous prices by bemo and taxi drivers. Decided there and then i did not like bali. With the knowledge of having to go home early, due to financial reasons, i choose to head for lombok the next morning, just to get away from it all if you know what i mean. Afetr a very long ferry ride, and 1 hour on the back of a scooter, i spend the night in senggigi, sonya's place. Then went over to gili trawangan (island) for new years. Didn't have a blast, but wasn't really looking for it either. Just had some quiet beers on the beach with a german couple. On the first of january i went back to sonya's place in senggigi, wher i ... read more

It's my last day in Gili Trawangan. My last day in Paradise, Christmas Day. I leave this island for down under in a short time and can't remember the last time i was this passionate about a place. This island. These people. The wonderful relationships i have made in this short time that i have been traveling. It is the most freeing experience i have ever had in the whole of my life. I feel as if i could just float away and disappear on an island in the sea and stay forever. I feel much sorrow having to leave such a beautiful place and beautiful people. People that are full of life and love. That will make you feel at home in their home and in their hearts. They don't have much and they don't ... read more

After Sumatra (I've added photos to my previous entry) we flew to Bali which is another of the Indonesian islands. It was amazing how different this place was compared to Sumatra - loads of tourists and every local you meet tries to sell you something - transport, t-shirts, bracelets, hats, fruit, drinks, mats to lie on the beach, blow-pipes, bow and arrows etc etc. So, as you walk along in Kuta you get shouted at from everyone you meet to buy something. Also, the prices for everything was much higher here than in Sumatra (don't get me wrong its still dirt cheap) but the standard of living seems a bit higher as well which is cool. Anyway, we stayed in Kuta for a couple of days which although it has nice beaches and really good surfing ... read more
