I arrived around noon, but my host had to work until 18h. I had contact with another couchsurfer who picked me up from the airport and took me for lunch. I am a bit more familiar with Indonesian food, so when I saw satay on the menu, I had to try it. It was so delicious! And as you might guess, eating it in the country of origin instead of my home country, it was the best I had ever tasted. The guy was also super kind and wanted to bring me to the place where I would meet my host, but when we left the restaurant, it was too late for him to enter the city. Apparently they have a system in Jakarta, that there are certain hours, only odd numbers on one day and ... read more

I was on exchange study in Indonesia last year (2018, from Jan to May). I didn't blog about it last year and I also didn't think there were much to share about. In view of my days as a university student are numbered, my final exam of my last semester was over 2 weeks ago. Now I am still staying in my university hostel in campus, I will be a working adult 2 weeks later when I start my first real job. With the little days I have here, I am reminiscing the exciting life of these 4 years of tertiary study. I flew back from Jakarta to Singapore on 31 May 2018 right after I finished my exam in Indonesia. I remembered rushing to the airport after exam because my internship in Singapore will start ... read more

Today really started at 11:00pm the prior day when our guide (Ahmad) and driver picked us up. Sunrise is the most popular time at Mount Bromo. The dawn skies over the volcanic range and moonscape terrain offer outstanding photo opportunities. The drive to Bromo took a little over three hours, which included an unexplained, extended rest stop at a roadside gas station. We rested in the back of our Toyota Avenza and tried to sleep. The final approach was a winding road up the alpine slopes of Mount Bromo. Ahmad had arranged for us to have a rest at a “home-stay” which was somebody’s house that had been converted into a short-term hostel. Other groups were stirring by the time we got there and appeared to have spent the night before summitting Bromo. We chilled on ... read more

By 6:00 we were at the train station awaiting our locomotive’s departure. The station was not well marked as far as which line was going to Surabayaor when. We eventually figured out where we needed to be. The train itself was quite nice. Kristy had paid extra to be in the executive cabin. The ride to Surabaya from Jogja was about five hours. Along the way, we passed many smaller towns. We made stops in towns large enough for a train station. There were many rice paddies and a few cornfields alongside the tracks. In the distant horizon, we could see large volcanos which were largely obscured by clouds. During the journey, Kristy read about gun dog training and posted several pictures from Jogja to Facebook. Brad played on his computer and watched his kindle fire. ... read more

Jim put us in contact with somebody at the Jogja Habitat office who arranged a driver for us. Tono, our driver, picked us up at 9:00 for a day of exploring the area surrounding Jogja. Borobudur was our first stop, about a two-hour drive from Jogja. Borobudur is a Buddhist temple dating back to the 8th century. We bought a package ticket that included entrance to Prambanan, our next stop. Fortunately, Brad still had his U Chicago student ID and was able to get a $15 discount! The grounds at Borobudur are immaculately manicured. There are large grassy yards filled with shrubs and trees. The temple itself is a large, square pyramid carved out of dark stone. Each block of the pyramid has pictures sculpted into it. Hundreds of Buddha statues line the terraces of the ... read more

Our first day in Jogja we didn’t have any set plan. We loosely planned to see what there was to see in town and venture outside the city on the next day. We spent the morning googling and searching trip advisor to figure out what to do. First up was a haircut for Brad. He had not been to a barber for a couple weeks before our wedding. We stopped at the url=https://www.google.co.id/maps/place/52+Barbershop/@-7.818303,110.368112,15z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0xd8efd06b30d37f79!8m2!3d-7.818303!4d110.36811252 Barbershop. We had to wait a while before Brad got a haircut that took nearly an hour. The final product was superb and cost about $3.50. After that, we took a car over to Malioboro street which is a well-known shopping destination. There were some conventional malls and stores that lined the market filled streets. We walk... read more

I wake in a cold sweat. I think I might have made some unflattering remarks about the safety and security record of the airline we came here on in an earlier post. I now realise that we will be travelling with them again today. I hope they’re not one of those companies that pays people to search the internet to see whether any of their passengers have said anything disparaging about them. I wonder how they might extract their revenge. Crashing the plane would seem to be a bit extreme, but maybe they might think that feeding me dodgy food was an appropriate punishment. I wonder if I can hold out all day and all night without eating. We spend the morning lazing by the pool with Brian and then catch a taxi to the airport. ... read more

After a pleasant overnight stay in a lovely hotel in Malang that was once a Dutch colonial building, we say goodbye to comfort and head off to visit Mount Bromo, one of the many hundreds of volcanoes in Indonesia. Our new driver Tommy offers us a quick visit to the Malang bird market, a street with hundreds of small and mostly colourful birds for sale. Owning caged birds are a symbol of prestige in Indonesia, and seeing them is OK, but we don’t like the sight of half a dozen rabbits squashed up in a small cage and are downright appalled at the sight of two tiny monkeys dressed in sweaters trying to escape their cage. Tommy takes the back routes to Tumpang, which finally afford us a sight of the real countryside. The villages are ... read more

One thing about Indonesia is the interesting calls of the toads and frogs that come out at night. We particularly enjoy one creature that, in a loud and rather deep tone, has a call that sounds like “ars......soooowl” repeated about half a dozen times. I do wish I knew what it was.... Today we have a full day in Jogjakarta, with a city tour in the morning and a culinary tour in the afternoon. Our guide arrives and we set off in two bekaks – bicycle rickshaws – with me in one and Sara and the lady guide Vita in the other. We ride for about 15 minutes to the kraton. The traffic to the first time visitor to Asia might seem chaotic but to us it is positively sedate. David’s driver/rider babbles away, obviously believing ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Java » Borobudur May 26th 2018

We decide to skip the 3am departure to watch the sun rise over Borobudur, and instead allow ourselves a lie in till 6am, which allows time for breakfast and a very brief glimpse of the volcano before it vanishes back into the mist. Borobudur is an hour’s drive away, and August takes us on the back routes which are far more scenic and rural and much quieter than the highway. All the guide books say it’s vital to get there before 7.30am when the tour parties arrive, as it gets appallingly crowded. We are nervous that our need for sleep may result in a dreadful visit fighting off the crowds, so are pleasantly surprised, not to say relieved, when we arrive to find a peaceful car park and nobody ahead of us in the ticket queue. ... read more
