Day 1: The Yoga Retreat w/Laura DeFreitas & Danu Enterprises It is morning over the rice fields. Expected sounds of roosters crowing and crickets singing spread across the valley. Small birds chirp as they hover over the green carpet and geckos skitter along patio walls. The daylight of Galungan is cast over Ubud, and amidst the silence of the hour, an elderly man acts as a human scarecrow. He barks tonal commands and guttural expressions. He swings a bamboo pole tied with plastic. This is his duty, and as the days continue and our presence remains, it becomes habitual. The man is protecting his family’s income, shooing away the flocks of feathers from eating their unhulled grains. Morning—it is standard. Rise for Balinese kopi (coffee) and teh (tea) before an 8AM yoga practice with Laura DeFreitas. ... read more

We arrived in Denpasar around 9 am and headed straight to Ubud. Ronn, a Warm Heart friend, was already there, so we asked to go to the Swan Inn where he was staying. Our driver couldn't find it, but we were quickly exposed to some Balinese hospitality, as a stranger offered to walk us down a side street to the guesthouse. We managed to get the room next to Ronn's and ran into him on our way out to search for food. The three of us wandered down Monkey Forest Rd. to find lunch, continuing downhill until we found a price we were happy with. This landed us at Sagittarius Cafe, where we feasted on Indonesian dishes. Wes and Ronn tried the local rice wine, and forced themselves to drink a small bottle. I have to ... read more

Indonesia, Indonesia, Indonesia...each time I think of the word I feel elated...this place is truly a heaven in which I hope someday my soul will rest for all of eternity... I think all this religion is going to my head...In Yogyakarta living with Dan it was Muslim...the call to prayer spoken at every Mosque around the city at 8, 12, 4, 7 and 4AM, and in Bali with Hinduisum where 1/4 of a locals' life is spent making offerings, praying, preparing and participating in cermonies...spirituality and faiths of many kinds reside within you as you travel through this country as spirits of the unknown are always present... I am currently in the small mountainous town of Ubud in central Bali, traveling with a woman and her 14 year old daughter from France...we met at my hotel ... read more

Thursday July 17, 2008 - This is another one of those longest days ever feeling days, but admittedly, it was more comfortable than the longest busride ever. I woke up at 6:30, made sure all my things were together, and then discovered white spots on my tonsils. Again? I had already started this trip on medicine for tonsilitis. Now I was glad to be leaving this tiny paradise island for Bali - at least I could get some medical attention. I then went to get the boys so we could get to the wee boats that would eventually take us to the ferry in time. We made it with time to spare. We had our little boat ride (you have to stand in the water and time your jump into the boat to coincide with the ... read more

025 - Indonesia - Ubud 07/18/08 - 07/25/08 Art shopping in Ubud We stopped by Ubud, Bali to do some art shopping and little bit of pampering. You may recall Hannah's story a few months ago when we went for the first time. Ubud is the cultural heart of Bali and also the creative hub for all the arts. In addition to paintings you can find sculptures, home appliances, gold, silver, batik... pretty much anything. We bought a couple of great abstract art pieces as well as a gigantic 'ninja' painting. The tricky part will be finding enough wall space to hang these up! We also pampered ourselves with a two hour body massage/scrub/mask treatment at a spa. That's not usually my sort of thing but I'd be lying if I said it was anything short ... read more

After hitching a dive boat for a three hour voyage (which one of us would describe as "harrowing") across the Bali straits from Lombok we arrived on the Balinese coast. It was immediately obvious that it was nothing like its neighbor to the east. The roads are all paved, tourists are everywhere, and our cab route took us by a Dunkin Donuts (which the other one of us would describe as "tempting"). Culturally speaking, Bali is the polar opposite of Lombok. With only a tiny fraction of its population Muslim, the rest is Hindu, but a particularly Balinese form of Hindu, with principles slightly different from Indian Hinduism. Each town is required to have at least three temples, and the Balinese take their religion extremely seriously. For example, in front of every house, shop, market, temple, ... read more

One of the great things about Bali (which is about the size of Delaware) is that you can see many of the tourist highlights in one day! Being in one place for several weeks allowed me to see the Indonesians in their day to day life and get a true perspective of the islands culture. It also allowed me to make some Balinese friends, one of which offered to drive me and a few other volunteers around Bali for the day. We started off the morning at 9am by attending a traditional Balinese Barong dance. There are several different dances, each telling a different story with ornate costumes, precise movements and beautiful gamelan music. I have never seen anything like it before in my life, it is definitely a must see if you ever make it ... read more

One morning I accidentally stood on a large beetle, this made a loud crunching noise, which made me feel a bit sick. The cleaner at our hotel looked at me and said 'It’s OK, good riddance to it'. I asked him what he meant. He told me that all insects are scum and that he believed were once the human souls of all the really bad people of this world like drug dealers, killers, child abusers, sex traders and so on. I looked at him for a little longer than normal as I could not believe what he had just said as I picked off the remaining bits of beetle carcass from the sole of my foot. He told me that the evil humans of this world reincarnate as insects as Bali Hindus believe there is ... read more

Strange as it seems, it is in their cremation ceremonies that the Balinese have their greatest fun. A cremation is an occasion for gaiety and not for mourning, since it represents the accomplishment of their most sacred duty: the ceremonial burning of the corpses of the dead to liberate their souls so that they can thus attain the higher worlds and be free for reincarnation into better beings" Miguel Covarrubias Bali means Island of the Gods, its religion is 93% Hindu which expresses itself through the many hourly, daily, monthly, bi-monthly, yearly, twice yearly, decade, end of century, beginning of century, summer, autumn, winter, spring, birth, 3 month of age, 6 months of age, reaching 17 and adulthood (teeth filing ritual), promotions, demotions, weddings and death, the final cremation ritual that lasts for days even years ... read more
