Went back to Kuta after Lovina to meet up with an Aussie couple Mat & Leisa who we met in Thailand. Matty picked up and ear infection which stopped him from any water activities for a week. We hired a motor bike and headed to Nusa Dua an area of Bali with really expensive hotels and private beaches but we didn't think the beach was that great!!!We did have great fun watching a non-English white couple try and take the perfect picture of the girl in Sea, they did not like it when we started taking pictures of them taking pictures!!! But hey it was thanks to them we got the inspiration to do the same except with a comedy twist check out the photo of the 4 of us having a ball. Also had a ... read more

When I think of Indonesia, I think of dense rainforest, dripping water, dim green light, giant trees with leaves the size of picnic tables, dark wood, orangutans. I think mystery and the weight of millennia hanging in the unmoving air inside the rainforest. This may be true of parts of the country, but not true of Kuta Beach on Bali. Think surfing, surfboards, surf shops, surf schools and surfers. Think suntan, suntan oil, sunbathers and sunshine. Think sand, waves, a fringe of palm trees and a beach road jammed with cars, motorbikes, scooters, minivans and even horse-drawn carts. Think shopping. It's dense here. Thousands of people on the long, long, broad beach, jade-green waves curling up and breaking a little offshore. On a reef further out more waves break, curling over in a white line with ... read more

Bali - 14th August 08 Matty: Surf, Sun, Paradise well at least it was when we arrived on the 14th August we found a cool hotel in Kuta Beach with pool and the first few days there was nought but Blue Skies!!! We toped up our fading tans and got into the groove with a bunch of Austrian surfer dudes and had a carnage night out for Daniels (Austrian Surfer) 26th birthday. Got us another bit of hefty luggage soon after arriving a 6”10 surfboard its proving great fun I am slowly getting better!!! After a week of sunning it up on Kuta's beach we decided to see some more of the island and rented a Suzuki Jimmi its tiny but it fits us and luggage in just right, thought we would strike out south first ... read more

Ok so how do I say this in the nicest way possible, Kuta SUCKED!!. Well I guess it wasn't so bad, it just wasn't as good as everyone made it out to be, and you all know what happens when you have high expectations. The touts in Kuta are enough to drive even a seasoned traveler insane, Ben had to calm me a few times. There are lots of vacationing surfers roaming around and high end stores priced higher than I would pay back home for the same stuff. I do want to mention that laundry is still cheap to do there though. Ben arrived a day after me, and we walked around town a bit, and then decided to try surfing. For those that remember my first try at surfing in Equidor, it wasn't as ... read more

Well here i am just almost where i want to be. Bali is the place Kuta not quite but interesting. We arrived late at night. Our plane from KL was late about an hour so everthing got pushed back. We paid extra at the airport and upgraded our cheap air asia ticket sit anywhere where you can as long you shove everyone else out of the way to premier boarding. so we got to go on first and check the seats out we want and sat right in the front row. got off the plane first (first time ever for me) and then got through customs before the hoards so it worked out very well. lots of traffic on the way in and the first thing i noticed was the amount of bikes. Just everywhere. we ... read more

Ok so I'm not really in Kuta but I am right next door. The town is Legian for those of you following along on the map. Is the map even working? At any rate. I came here yesterday after moving out of the resort. I have to say that I wasn't too sorry to see the last of that place. I came here to Legian and then realized my $8 a night options were limited. I also decided that to console myself after seeing my travel partner leave that I needed a somewhat posh hotel, and I got it. You know swimming pool, marble bathroom, cable TV, and the likes. The entire time I've been here I have had a few ttoubling issues to deal with that I managed to put off while Stephanie was here ... read more

... or at least that's what we told people. It started out as an experient with Kai and Danielle (our Dutch/German friends from Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam) telling us that it's bad mojo to tell locals you're from North America or Europe (because then poof! prices triple just like magic!), so they started telling people they were from the first, most random country they could think of. We tried it a few times ... "We're Mexican", "We live in Bora Bora", "My mom is from Sudan, but my dad is from Antarctica, I was born in Guyana, but am living in Chad" ... and really did start to notice a difference! Not only do the dollar signs disappear from their eyes ("Chad? Huh? You rich in Chad?"), but then we'd almost always be spared the "Oooh, ... read more

MONDAYI was told by the more experienced travellers that Kuta is the arm pit of Indonesia and to save international travellers face, we needed to get our bearings and move on. Today I went to the beach of Kuta to have a long rest in perfect sunshine. I laid down, creamed up, headphones on. Closed my eyes, 45 seconds later the sun went in, it stayed in for a silly long time, felt something brush my thigh then my arm then laughter could be heard. I opened my eyes to find seven Korean men crouching around my shy body. Chief Korean photographer aged around 55 wore backward NY peak cap, white socks, brown sandals. He directed his motley crew on how to stand, crouch or kneel for optimum holiday voyeur snap shot, all without my consent. ... read more
