Bonjour tout le monde! After spending a few days in a stormy Kuala Lumpur, we caught a flight to the world-famous island of Bali, the only Hindu island in the most populous Muslim country in the world, Indonesia... Kuta, Bali - I think Chris described Kuta as 'Magaluf for Australians' so expectations weren't high, but due to its proximity to the airport it made sense to spend a night here. From the fleeting glimpse I got it was exactly how I'd imagined - fast food restaurants, Tesco's, loud music, pissed Aussies and pretty much everything that you wouldn't associate with Indonesia. We left the next morning. Ubud, Bali - Made famous by the book and film 'Eat, Pray, Love', explaining the high proportion of middle-aged women out to 'find themselves', Ubud is another incredibly popular, albeit ... read more

Our time in Amed was short but sweet. I woke up early and was able to see part of the sunrise, then went back to bed for a couple hours. We went to the beach and went snorkeling for a bit. We both agree that off the shores of the beach is the most beautiful underwater coral and plant life we’ve ever seen. The coral was blue, white and brown. Lots of the coral was alive slowly moving with the ocean. The plants were all different shapes and colors with fish hiding in its leaves. There were different fish swimming all around. We saw a long needle like fish, we saw another with a hook like fin by its head, and 4 spikes out by its tail, and tons of bright colorful fish. When we came ... read more

After making a few small purchases at Ubud market (wanting to make many more - a good place for pressies - but not enough room in our bags) we said a sad farewell to Ubud and journeyed to the west coast to a little town called Amed. This really was a little fishing village. We soon discovered that their primary source of income, aside from the odd incredibly lavish hotel (we stayed in a cosy bungalow homestay next door to one and managed to persuade them to let us use their pool!), is sea salt. Within minutes we were accosted by a gang of kids; "Hey sis what is your name?" and "Mister you wan buy salt?" - and those who hadn't learnt to say that in English had a paragraph written about how our purchase ... read more

The minibus picked me up at 10am and after picking up a few more passengers we made our way across the north of Bali to the far east and the area collectively known as Amed. Amed is the first of about half a dozen villages and bays which have quite a few hotels and guesthouses scattered along the road. I decided to stay at Jemeluk which has good snorkelling and some of the cheaper hotels. It didn't take long before I got a nice big beachfront room including fridge and breakfast for $9 a night. After having a late lunch I walked down the road a couple of kms before returning along the beach. The beaches are either black sand or dark stones which can get a little uncomfortable to walk on, but it is a ... read more

01MAY11 Dave here. Wow, what do I even say about Bali? After the mad rush of India, the slowness and friendliness are nearly shocking. I did like a lot of things about India, mind you. The things which we were ‘warned’ about never even came up on my list. The abject poverty was there, but I’ve seen it in San Francisco and LA. There was begging but I didn’t feel the background hostility I sometimes feel in the States. The food was spicy, but overall not as bad as Thailand can get. Now, I did not eat from street vendors and avoided ice except when it was stated clearly that it was filtered, but for all the crazy warnings we had going in, India was quite nice. There was lechery like I’ve never seen, Heather ... read more
