I couldn't resist snapping these women in their colorful outfits, getting out of a motor rickshaw.

We didn't have the best rooms at this hotel at Mount Abu, a former palace owned by the maharaja of Jaipur, but the views from the terrace were fantastic.

Here are our intrepid travelers after hiking up the steps to the highest peak in Rajasthan.

You can see all six of us travelers along with our driver Ranjit Singh and his young assistant Manoj Kumar. Behind us is the van we spent the last several days in. These guys were the best, and we were sorry to say good-bye to them after Mount Abu.

We all happened to be staying with my cousin Dolly and her family in Gujarat on my birthday, so the timing was perfect to celebrate. Plus, my uncles Harnek and Darshan from Canada had just arrived.

Sometimes traffic on the Indian roads gets snarled. Sometimes traffic takes the form of a herd of goats.

I like this shot Steve took of a young couple on a motorcycle. It reminds me of a scene from a Bollywood movie.

Ellora contains a whole series of caves, but we only had time to see a few of them on our way from Gujarat to Aurangabad.

We were able to spend more time at the Ajanta caves, a series of Buddhist shrines and monasteries carved into a hillside. Here you can see how they are spread out along this horseshoe-shaped valley.

Here you can see some of the carvings that abound around the Buddhist shrines.

Ajanta has a number of well-preserved paintings depicting the Buddha and episodes from his life.

The caves have lots of stone steps that one clamber up and pose on.

One of the true masterpieces of Ajanta, this sculpture depicts the Buddha preparing for his passage into Nirvana.

Here you can see the serene, beatific expression on the Buddha's face.

Getting from Aurangabad back to Delhi required a 24-hour train ride in a sleeper compartment. Here are four of us enjoying some tea.

The long train journey was eased by the companionship of Praveen, whom we met on board, and by a pack of cards that Steve bought from a passing vendor.
