Kuari Pass Trek For me, trekking has been that one thing that I have wanted to do much more than I have been able to in real life. Though that is true for a lot of other things like playing the guitar, taking looong drives, playing Angry Birds the whole day, flying a plane etc etc, the yearning (and practicality) of being able to undertake trekking been much greater. And here I was, in between jobs, with a break that I could use as I chose to! I had one week before I had to join my new job on the 7th of May. I frantically began to search for trekking options. My criteria was clear; the trek had to be - a 4-5 day trek (excluding travel ex-Delhi to and from trek start point) ... read more

We are back in civilization! It's hard to sum up the experience in words, but two hyphenated ones come to mind: life-changing and life-affirming. We endured a week with no cars in sight, a tent for a home, and a bucket of water for a shower. But then again, 8 guys took very good care of us: our guide, Prithvi, who grew up in the region; a shepard and two assistants who led 6 donkeys carrying all our supplies; two cooks, who prepared hot breakfast and dinner each day, not to mention packed lunches and soup and other snacks; and for good measure, two other assistants to set up tents and bring us chai in the morning. Our Czech friends were a great addition, always in good spirits. We couldn't have asked for better travel companions. ... read more

For people like us, in the plains, Auli is heaven. From Joshimath, at 6200ft, a 20min. ropeway ride takes you up to 10,500ft. As you get out of the cabin the Hathi(elephant), Ghora(horse) & Palki(palenquin) peaks welcome come - almost at touching distance. The temperature difference between Joshimath and Auli is overwhelming. You can further climb up (optional) another 750 ft to get an even better view of the peaks. During the winter they are all snow covered as is the slope you are standing on. Even during summer, if you are fortunate, you can see a sheet of snow on the ground. Take heavy woolens with you. ... read more

We just stumbled back into town after 12 hours on the lowest class bus in India. The Himalayas are young and sedimentary so landslides are frequent and road work is never finished. Our bus bounced over huge fallen rocks, inches from the 1000 foot crumbling edge with no guard rail. Overflowing with people we screech brakes around thin corners with full size busses squeezing between us and the mountain. On the other side a mile down is a river. Nothing between us and death. Most women are puking, Melissa falls asleep to the bouncing, and I stay sane by imaging myself jumping through the tiny window and grabbing a small tree when we inevitably drive off the cliff. My nerves are tight and my stomach turns the whole way. The bus slows only for fresh landslides ... read more

I will begin my journal with my snow experience, which I had last year in December. I loved being near some of the highest peaks in India when I visited Joshimath and Auli. My journey to Auli was one of the most arduous one considering that it takes more than 12 hours on narrow and winding roads with hair pin bends making me close my eyes with my friend – a veteran on these roads since he belongs to Joshimath – at the wheel who drives car even on these roads like he does on Delhi roads. As we neared Joshimath mountains kept getting higher and higher with Alaknanda giving us company throughout the journey on one side. At certain places negotiating road was like taking part in some "Who dares wins" with widening of road ... read more
