we're in a quaint and charming little indian union territory of puducherry (more affectionately known as pondicherry/pondi; hellooo alcohol!); with a salient and conspicuous french colonial heritage that looms large. ergo, lanes/streets are Rues and fish is poisson and they do a mighty fine coq au vin (haha yes we're not that cheap charlies afterall; we do indulge in spurts). its a seaside town so thats a pretty big plus as we soak up the bay of bengal. azure waters it patently isnt haha! water does glisten sporadically. one thing's for sure, all that glitters isnt gold, as b finds herself plagued with the mandatory stomach bug & diarrhea. its the quintessential rite of passage that everyone goes thru' to then be fully inducted into India proper haha. so she's fine & well, surmounted that litmus ... read more

I have had requests from friends to update my blog for India, so here is a very quick one! Pondicherry is as wonderful as I remember it from last year. In fact I was supposed to be going to Ooty but cancelled that so that I could stay longer here. There are not many photos because I have been too busy doing things, meeting amazing people, reading incredibly inspiring books and meditating. What have I done to deserve this I wonder. On prompting from friends, once again, I have been keeping a journal, here is my second day in Pondi. 21st March This is where I wanted to stay last time I was in Pondi but it was full. Now here I am in my sparse but adequate and clean room, with a private bathroom, a ... read more

The French have saved us Well what we thought was going to be one buss turned into 3, nice. We not only stepped back in time here, we seemed to have changed countries!!! Pondicherry was once governed by the French, and we stayed in the french quarter, with wide clean streets beautiful pastel coloured buildings...very colonial. We ambled through parks, and promenaded along the beach front, even found coq au vin on some menus!! Pasta, Guy ate so much pasta. There is no tax on Booze here so the beer is really cheap, even found a Carlsberg quart. There are many Ghandi statues around this part of India, not only is he a national hero, he also made significant decisions in and around here ( weaving alt m his own cotton, and the end of the ... read more

Chennai Okidokey, so I arrived at 9am in Chennai, sweating my balls off because I'd roughed it a bit and gone non-air-con. Was also slightly hungover still from the Mysore expedition, and ached like an old woman. (Which despite Indian's telling me I am, I AM NOT) I woke up at 8am, an hour before arrival, feeling pleased with myself for not missing my stop, and everyone else in the compartment was fully awake, had folded their beds away and were looking pretty pissed off with me. (If I'm still sleeping, they have to share their seats with the guy who sleeps above me) I had some omlette (again, it came with tomato sauce that the breakfastwalla went and got for me, the only foreigner, specifically) & tea and was ready to go. Sort of. I ... read more

Pondicherry, the name has the same mysterious feeling to my ears as places like Zanzibar. I truly enjoyed Zanzibar ad Pondicherry was next on my romantic list. But to be truthful, I really had no idea of what to expect. The top of the peak season is just behind us...which means it is easier to find rooms. Hotel de l'Orient...if you come here, this is the name to remember. Pondicherry is a former french trading enclave. Per se, the place is maybe just below a square mile. It lays on the seashore, running around less than a mile, and few blocs deep from the seashore. My friend had told me that this is the place to see in the region. And if you ask what else to see beside the French area, well, there is not ... read more

I LOVE PONDI! Yes, I probably could live here for quite a while. The French quarter has the most beautiful coloured buildings with wide tree lined streets and many choices of food too. It gets really hot at times though, which could be a problem. But I shan't ramble on here, just know that I love it and will be back there in the not too distant future, especially as I feel that I have made some lovely friends. Thank you for everything Hari, Petra and Marion. See you all in 2010. ... read more

I am at a really beautiful part of South India right now, Pondicherry! This place was colonized by the French for decades up until 1949. The architectures here are really French, a lot of the buildings look like boutique shops. And yes, there are French restaurants! Of course the chefs aren’t French, but the Indian chef is a master at making French food. I finally ate something that wasn’t curry or Indian! Haha, don’t get me wrong, I love Indian food but it’s been a long while since I ate beef since nobody here eats it. So the buildings are French, some restaurants are French but mostly everything else is Indian! I want to share something with you that might change your perspective on something. For the past 3 months in India, it has been monsoon ... read more

We left for Pondicherry at about 9ish and arrived about 12 ish. It is an old French city and has French street names and French food influences. We stayed in a beautiful Ashram (calm hotel with a 1030 curfew and yoga gardens) with views of the beach. We went for a mini thaili lunch which was good at the Coromandale. I then tried an ice cream which I thought wont effect me as I'm already ill. I really needed it as it was 37c !! We walked to the monument on the beach and then to the park. We then went for a juice in a roof top restaurant where we almost fell asleep. Pondicherry really isn't like anywhere in India I have visited. The outer section of the city is typically Indian but the older ... read more
