I went to puri with my two friends(Suman & Subhajit) & our that time maths sir(Syamal Sir). It was just after the Ratha Yatra. So we were fortunate to ride the chariots of Lord Jagannath. There were loads of people queuing to see Jagannath. We (me,Suman & Subhajit) went on to make a record of our own by spending in the beach for around 4 - 5 hours. The local lifeguard to whom we left our belonging before jumping into the water were very annoyed by us and it resulted in refusing to take our cloths in the next day. After spending so much time in the beach we couldn't recognize us infront of the mirror. It took about one year to recover from that skin tone that we managed to get...anyways beside spending in the beach we went to see the ... read more

Marc and I left Varanasi, heading East towards Calcutta, the capital of West Bengal. I've always associated Calcutta with an overwhelming sense of poverty, an Orwellian layout of broken down buildings and ghettos filled with rubbish and wailing children begging for food. While I didn't find Calcutta overwhelmingly beautiful, I certainly didn't expect a booming Metropolis with a pretty chi-chi area filled with cafes and bistros with a skyline boasting one of the longest suspension bridges in the world. They also have a theme park called Science City, but that's definitely worth a miss, though I did get a mean plate of Chow Mein noodles in the cafeteria. We spent an uneventful Easter morning in Calcutta, when Marc told me he wanted to show me something special -- a surprise. About 20 squelchingly hot blocks ... read more

Hello all, how are you doing? This really is going to be short and sweet. I've got a stinking cold, so all i can think of is crawling back to my bed for a nap. This is probably the best internet connection i am going to have for a while, so i though it best just to get on with it! Since i last wrote i've hit the road again. Leaving Mamallapuram was sad, but it was time. I have met some great people and made some even better friends, so i'm sure i will be back at some time. Working with Earth Aid was one of the best things i have ever done and the experience was amazing! So, its been good to get back on the road again. I found it quite a daunting ... read more

Rangers We left Calcutta in the back of a madman's tour-bus. It was cold, it was night, it was the impoverished upper-east corner of India. We didn't expect it, but we got it: ten hours of the worst discomfort either Chelly or I had ever imagined. The road was barley-paved and full of holes. Our driver bombed across pits and jumped the speed-bumps, weaving between both lanes of traffic and tearing off blindly to pass. I swear the bus got up on two wheels every time we took a corner. At the end of it, we were sore and tired and rearin' to puke. So we got off the bus in the Hindu pilgrim's town of Puri. Avoiding the hawkers and the beggars and the cows, we jumped in an Auto Rickshaw on the way to ... read more

I've just stayed 5days/4nights with Baba Panda at his Asram in Chandrabaga just down the road from Puri and I have learnt a lot but perhaps not what you might expect to learn from spending time with a Baba at his Asram and being the only one there... For a start having spent a lot of time with Baba and some of the other Baba's (Guru's/Sadhu's)* I realised that all of the ones I met are just people who chose an easy life smoking hash and relaxing, some amount to no more than a beggar in fancy dress. Don't get me wrong they have complete faith in what they do and take it very seriously but a 'real' Guru I don't think would act as casually as many of the people I met. There are of ... read more

In an unusual (?) bout of laziness, I decided to ask the hotel travel agent to purchase my train tickets from Chennai to Bangalore, and Bangalore to Hospet. This usually incurs a commission of about Rs 100 per ticket, which is more than 10% of the ticket cost even for a 10 hour journey in 2AC. However it does mean you don't have to pay the auto fares to/from the station reservation office, plus you save the time waiting around there, so taking that into consideration it starts to look like a more reasonable figure. He then asked me how I was getting to Chennai, then enquired as to the cost of my ticket. When I told him $235, he shook his head and tutted, saying it was actually - surprise, surprise - $143. He then ... read more

I'd originally intended catching an early bus to Puri (on the coast), but the unignorable order to find a toilet that my stomach was periodically giving me meant that a taxi was the only mode of transport that would eliminate all possibility of a catastrophe. I was also glad of this decision when I saw how misty it was - the bus system in India has an extremely high rate of accidents at the best of times, so throwing some bad weather into the mix seemed to be asking for trouble. We did pass one freshly overturned lorry along the way. Once the mist had burned off, I was able to see how lush the surrounding countryside was. Many palm trees, lots of greenery, and the occasional peaceful lake - in fact, how I was imagining ... read more

Leslie's list of "Why's" Why isn't there a better way to process the waste created by over one billion people (and cows)? For a country that sees SO MANY Western tourists, why isn't there more of an interest in our sense of 1. cleanliness 2. sales techniques 3. noise levels 4. personal space? Why do so many Indians make me so annoyed with them? Why is this man giving me walking directions to the station when I'm asking if I can call? Why doesn't anybody EVER have change? I had a really interesting opportunity before dawn on the 24-hour train ride to Bhubaneswar. Turns out, I was sleeping under a woman who grew up here in Orissa but has lived in Albany, NY for the last 20 years. Well, of course I picked her brain about ... read more
