“For the animals shall not be measured by man. In a world older and more complicated than ours, they move finished and completed, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren, they are not underlings, they are other nations - caught with ourselves in a net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendour and travail of the earth.” Henry Beston The cycle out of Jaipur was really not bad, we even met another Indian Cyclist on a very old road bike, and it was the first and only Indian bike we have seen with gears. In fact once we were back on the bikes much of the bad vibes we had experienced in Jaipur melted away, as the simple ... read more

Dnes su presne 2 mesiace odkedy som prisla do Indie.

Now this place is one of the undiscovered gems of India. Orchha is a very small village on the banks of the Betwa River- the cleanest river in India they say- and just about has more ancient palaces, temples and cenotaphs than people. The streets are virtually garbage-free since the population of the village hasn't overwhelmed its public services, and the air is fresh. However someone has taught the local kids that foreign tourists are a good source of handouts- every time we left the hotel we were greeted by a chorus of "hello pen" "hello one rupee"- I heard this in villages in Nepal as well. To get here we took a train to from Gwalior to Jhainsi, the nearest station to Orccha. It was about an hour and a half late into Gwalior, which ... read more

Three hours on a local bus to reach this city. I spent much of the ride closing the window, as due to the almost complete lack of shock absorbers, the vibration of the bus even on relatively smooth roads meant that every 5 minutes or so the window would have worked itself open about 20cm, I would get tired of having my hair blown in my face and shut it, then a minute later it would slowly start to slide open again... After arriving in the city we visited the palace of the Scindia family, the former maharajas of Gwalior. I am not a big fan of visiting recently inhabited palaces generally, they are usually full of dusty furniture, stuffed animals etc and this was no exception. Gwalior is one of the poorer cities I have ... read more

Hello there ... First, a quick note that I've hit the midpoint of my trip in India ... Six weeks down, six to go, and in 10 days my friend Adam will join me through New Year's! I've also left Northern India and I'm now in the south (in the tropics for all you winter lovers out there) and getting ready to explore some temples and beaches for the duration of my time here. Already, there are big changes, at least in Bangalore, the capital city of Karnataka. 1. No cows on the street (nor pigs, dogs, puppies, etc.) 2. Therefore, no shit (Sherlock) on the street 3. Rickshaws with meters 4. New culinary cuisine 5. New language ... so long Hindi ... namaste! 6. Lots of wealth around ... very western feel (I just ate ... read more

Well I left Rishikesh at 6am on the 2nd of Dec (by myself) with the aim of arriving in Agra. However somehow (some 12 hours later) when I was supposed to get off, a misunderstanding happened and I failed to do so. This meant I arrived in Gwoliar. I was pretty annoyed with myself and after much deliberation I got off at Gwoliar, found a rickshaw that i didn't have to fight with and went to a hotel. (Gwoliar is only about 2 hours from Agra so it wasn't too bad.) This lonely planet guide saved my life! Just a great book. So I stayed the night there and actually went and saw a pretty amazing fort in the morning so all was not lost. I guide hunted me down and took me round and in ... read more

From Varanasi we caught yet another overnight train to the city of Umaria and then a bus to the small town of Tala, the gateway into Bandhavgarh Park. The train was two hours late arriving in Varanasi and six and a half hours late getting into Umaria. We were suppose to arrive at 10pm in Umaria but instead got there at 4:30am. With no hostel in sight and the bus to Tala not leaving until 7am we had a few hours to kill. We convinced the station master to unlock the First Class waiting room and bunkered down with our sleeping bags on a reasonably clean wooden table. The table was a bit short for Jarrod and his feet hung over the edge but it was better than lying on the platforms dirty cement floor with ... read more
