Thikse to Pangong Tso The next morning I rose after sleeping very badly to discover that I had trapped a nerve in my back and could hardly walk. No more bike riding for me. I sat in the back of one of the 2 support vehicles for the last 2 days. This was not as bad as it sounds as I was able to take a lot more photos and quite enjoyed it. Just like driving a section in my trials car! The road led up to Chang La, the 3rd highest pass in the world and down the other side to a green valley with lots of lakes with wild horses, cows and take feeding there. Eventually the road rose over a sample pass separating the rest of the valley from Pangong Tso. Pangong Tso ... read more

My solo journey to Ladak, one of the crown jewels of India, began with meeting few strangers at the Mumbai Central railway station, who are now my friends for life. Train journey from Mumbai to Delhi was pleasing, as soon as we reached the capital of India, we commenced an overnight journey to Manali. Manali, being a high-altitude Himalayan town, the roads were no doubt scary and steep with lots of blind curves, but this was just the beginning. I woke up with a spectacular view of all mountains around and the Beas river flowing. The view was mesmerising, as fog took over the lush green mountains, the combination of colours made me feel like we were moving towards the heaven. Reaching at the hotel, we had breakfast, a brief round of introduction, and then dispersed ... read more

“That’s it!” a shriek goes. A blue speck discovered amidst the shining sandy mountains. Yes it was the first glimpse of the mystic lake that kept reverberating in our mind for a long time. And the speck grew bigger and bigger to a long blue strip of never ending water body that challenges our eyes to think beyond the horizon. The eerie silence of the region could make you feel like a castaway-standing all alone amidst these mighty mountains. It was 7th of July 2014 when we started our journey from Leh Town to this mystical lake. The arduous terrain en route to this land lock lake is like icing on the cake for adventure freaks, surpassing the steepest ascent of Changla pass, the third highest motorable peak in the world(17586 ft). The expedition starts at ... read more

Ladakh is located on the Northern tip of India bordering Tibet (now China). Most people in Ladakh are of Tibetan/Ladakhi Buddhist lineage. It's an extremely friendly place with lots of foreigners, mainly from Europe. Reaching Ladakh is a pain given that there is not enough connectivity with the rest of the country. But that is probably what makes this place a great one since it is still less mainstream than other places in India. Here are some pictures on the way to Pangong Lake in Ladakh.... read more

I boarded a shared cab from Leh, that left for Pangong Lake at 6 in the morning. The lake is more like a land locked sea, shared by the countries of India and China; with the larger portion falling in China. It was a five hour ride, which started getting beautiful once we crossed Karu and started gaining height. This time, unlike the other tourists in the cab, I wasn't bothered about photographing the view. Since I had already been in Ladakh for quite a few days and had taken a lot of pictures; I just thought of enjoying the view. Of all the passes that one encounters in Ladakh, the ascent to Chang La (17586 ft) is said to be the steepest. The road for the last few kilometres was not in a good condition, ... read more

Mornings were pretty cold in September there. When the morning alarm went off, if I remember correctly, it was about 5 in the morning and I jumped out of the bed, only to realize that I was not geared to fight the morning cold. Almost in a reflex action I fumbled in the dark for the pullover and jumped into it. It barely took me about half an hour to get ready and even before I knew it, I was back in the Xylo that I had hired for those 5-days in Leh. We were off to see the colours of pangong Tso. I was told it takes about 5 hours to reach the lake and so I started as early as possible. The first 3 hours into the journey went off easily while I was ... read more

Pangong Tso The Pangong Lake is 160 kilometer from Leh and offers spectacular views of the region. The lake is surrounded by mountains and the color of the lake changes shades throughout the day. This famous blue brackish lake is located on the India China border and is approximately 5 kms wide and over 144 kms long. Majority of the lake body falls in the Chinese territory. Spangmik, the farthest point to which visitors are permitted, is only some seven kilometer along the southern shore from the head of the lake and you can view the Changchenmo range, their reflections shimmering in the ever-changing blues and greens of the lake's brackish waters. ... read more

After white-water rafting the Zanskar river, My Danish friend and I headed out on motorbikes. I was on a Yamaha and my friend on an Enfield Thunderbird. We speeded out from Leh in the early morning, leaving behind the dusty clouds of traffic. On the way to Karu fuel station, we visited Stakna Gompa with amazing views of the Indus valley. I actually spent all day trying to start the bike in gears 2 and 3, not even in neutral, so luckily by the next day as we ascended the world’s third highest motorable pass, Chang La, I had it nailed. We slept in Tahktog, east of Leh, an incredibly remote place with dogs barking right outside all night and altitude making sleep impossible. The locals reminded me of hilltribe villagers in Thailand, the young girls ... read more
