If my last entry had a basic theme of camel-related excitement, I'd say that the theme of this one is going to have to be public transport-related discomfort. =/ Over the course of the week that this entry covers, I spent roughly 45 hours on public transport, all of it in the cheapest possible class. But before becoming intimately acquainted with India's public transport system, I took a couple of days in Delhi to relax after my mad dash through Rajasthan and the day out in the desert. To understand the two days I spent in Delhi, you could basically say that I just took a 'break' from India. I watched a few English-language movies in the air-conditioned cinemas, drank lots of good cappucinos at the new coffee bars, ate at KFC a couple of times, ... read more

...storms, hail, some more storms, diarrhea for heather and a neck sprain for me. But now things are much better. *sigh* of relief. The weather has been outrageous. Watching people's reactions to hail storms was rather interesting to me. I did not understand why people ran down the streets when caught in one, but that mystery was quickly solved. Returning back from work on Monday, I was caught in one. After the passing of a serious heat wave, this one seemed angry. But, really, one should not run - unless you have mastered running downhill on marbles against a stubborn wind. Well, you get to decide- whether you wish to land on your rear or get pelted. I chose the latter. I took refuge in a bus stand, and then when it seemed as though there ... read more

One of my volunteer assignments has involved working with an organization called Tong-Len. It's a non-profit organization which provides education and medical support for the families that live in a slum camp here in Dharamsala. The slum camp is named "Charan," and is home to immigrants from Rajistan and Maharashtra, two distinct states in India (the state I am in is called "Himachal Pradesh.") Tong-Len has set up two children's schools in Charan, which we affectionately call "The Big School" and "The Nursery School." Essentially they are two large tents smack in the middle of all the other make-shift tents in the slum camp. The Nursery School holds classes for the youngest children (I think between ages 3 and 5) while The Big School accomodates everyone else (kids between ages 6 and 12 - all in ... read more

Following our visit in Rishikesh we boarded a train to head to Dharamsala. We arrive in the morning to find ourselves in Jammu, Kashmir, 20 kilometers from the Pakistan boarder. It happens that our stop was in the middle of the night, and we slept right through it. We spent some time at the train station, waiting for the train to take us back down south. We had a man ask us, “is this your first visit here?” We replied that, “yes this was our first time in India.’ The man laughed and said, “ your not in India anymore, you are in Kashmir.” Ever since partition in 1947 the status of this land has caused much dispute between India and Pakistan. The conflict that is still going on and can be seen everywhere, from the ... read more

It's been a hectic past week & a half so there's been no entry, sorry folks. After leaving Jaisalmer and our desert experience we headed to Jodhpur (the Blue City) and were taken by a bout of apathy....spent three days in a lovely 400 year old haveli, got ourselves an a/c room with cable tv and just chilled (literally) out drinking beer and watching crap flicks -real cultural! We did manage to see the fort there but it was turned into a museum and didn't have the breathing vitality of Jaisalmer's fort so we weren't too impressed. Left the Jodhpur and headed to Udaipur where one can always catch a screening of the Bond flick Octopussy -it's shown everynight ad nauseum in most hotels at 7:30pm. The city is built around a lake in the centre ... read more

Brejreshvari Temple, Chamba (H.P) This temple is also of shikhara style built in stone at the entrance of Sarota outside the town dedicated to goddess Vajreshwari. It is known for its fine sculpture. It is believed to have been erected in eleventh century A.D. There is a short tree-line inscription carved on one of the two pillars in front of the entrance of the shrine. There are eighteen brief one-line epigraphs on the outer walls of the temple. An inscription on the pillar records that on the 17th day of Asadh 1992, the work was started in the temple. This work evidently refers to the repairs of renovation of the temple which was probably carried out during the reign of Udai Singh. At the entrance gate there are two dvarpalas standing with staff held in their ... read more
