The #1 hotspot for New Years Eve in India is definitely Goa. Everyone and EVERYONE from taxi drivers to Baliwood stars is there. Amazingly, a whole group of our San Francisco friends joined us to celebrate New Years together! Our first meeting was on an overnight train from Southern India. You can imagine how strange and wonderful it was to see such familiar faces so far away from home in an Indian train compartment. From the train we proceeded to bask on the beaches all day and bounce around the clubs all night. It was all great excetp for the 80% of the time that we spent stuck in terrible traffic and fighting enormous crowds. Let's just say New Years in Goa has become too popular for its own good. Yes, here is another time-travel blog in keeping with my re-doing old print journals for our records. SRI LANKA AND GOA, INDIA - DEC 05 & JAN 06 As most of you know, in November, 2005 we were in the U.S. for the birth of our grandson, Evan, but returned to Pretoria, South Africa (where we were living for a year) just before Christmas. We spent a lovely Christmas with our dear South African friends, Sue & Peter Poole and family at their second home on a nearby lake - idyllic! The day after Christmas we flew ... read more

Geo: 15.9824, 73.201We took a short break from the craziness of Mumbai by flying down to the beaches of Goa. Goa is worlds apart and not just because the whole state has 1/8 the population of the city of Mumbai. Initially Goa was ruled by various Muslim and Hindu leaders. It was an international trading center for about a 1000 years when Arab seafarers and Asian merchants from the "Spice Islands" (what is now Indonesia) would meet to trade pepper, gold, perfume and other luxuries. The Portuguese, led by Vasco De Gamma, came in 1498 to spread Catholicism and ensure that they would have a presence among the traders. From that point onward, the Portuguese had a toehold in Britain's colonial India until the Indian government annexed Goa in 1961. A span of 450 years of ... read more

After finishing my blog yesterday I changed into my swimsuit under my skirt and headed beachward. I was almost immediately offered a dolphin tour, but wandered around a little more, checking things out. On return, I initially agreed, but when I saw the small boat I changed my mind. Plus, I wanted to go with a group and not by myself. Siteseeing alone on the ocean sounds like a recipe for disaster in my mind!! So I switched to a larger 12 pax boat and we pushed off. Travelling out onto the Arabian Sea it was more than 20 minutes before we saw the first dolphins - just hints of fins above the ocean. We never did see much more than glimpses, so I was a little bit disappointed. Then I started thinking about how harrased ... read more

Hi Everyone! I am now at the southern-most part of my trip, in Goa. Colva Beach is in South Goa and it is a small town of less than 10, 000. I arrived very early yesterday morning, about 5 am into the slightly larger town of Margao, and took a rickshaw here. I waited around near the beach for a bit more light before trying to find a place to stay. I tried two before finding room at Graciano Cottages. They aren't, as the name implies, cottages, but reasonable rooms with bathrooms. I got a non-ac room on the second floor corner for 618 rupees ( $16) and promptly had a nap. The bus trip from Pune was better than my last trip, but I was at the back of the bus and it seemed like ... read more

Hello my fellow travelers! This is the third and final post about my trip to India in 2005 together with my parents and my uncle Anders. The last post covered our jungle excursion while this one covers our visit to Old Goa. In the days between our jungle trip and this one we just rested at the hotel with little to nothing happening. My father got another massage for his back, my mother and Anders lay by the pool while I photographed the animals and bought a small statuette of Buddha. I still have it at home and since my conversion it now sits as the centerpiece of my Buddhist altar at home. We went to Velha Goa together with the couple living in bungalow next to us. It is an old city that was constructed ... read more

Hello my fellow travelers! This is the second of three posts I'll make about my trip to India in 2005 together with my parents and my uncle Anders. The last post covered our time in Panaji while this one covers our second excursion which was a two-day guided round trip of Goa. Together with other guests we were picked up by a bus with two friendly and engaging guides and the first stop of the tour was a market in Panaji we we walked around for a while and bought some fruits for the road ahead. I also got to see an example of the famous Indian phenomenon of a cow stopping traffic. It was just laying very casually in the street without a care in the world as the cars were gently easing around it ... read more

Hello my fellow travelers! This is the first of three posts about a trip I did to India together with my parents and my uncle Anders in 2005. This would be the last time that the four of us traveled together til date. For this last hooray we decided to head east to India, our furthest away destination so far. As with our previous trips together the majority of our time was spent laying on the beach or gulping down the delicious food at the hotel. I especially favored the naan bread and the omelettes at the breakfast buffet. Aside from our lazy days at the hotel and at the beach we did three different explorations of Goa. This post will cover the first of them and it was on December 1st when we went to ... read more

We are almost at the end of our time in India and I can happily say that it was a very different experience to last time! Mind you, we have spent all of our time in Goa, which isn't the "real" India in that it's much cleaner and easier to travel in, but much less stressful! We have spent most of our time in a small beach town called Palolem. It has been fun to meet lots of other travellers, who basically fall into two categories: those that have been travelling in India and are here to escape the reality of it all, and those that flew straight into Mumbai, couldn't stand it, so came straight to Goa! We met one British guy who flew into Mumbai, got a rickshaw for 30 minutes into the city, ... read more
