I got up early for my hotel’s awesome refined breakfast. Afterwards, I went back to my room for a decadent mid-morning nap. I wasn’t actually planning on going sightseeing until noon. I generally only have the energy and desire for about three or four hours of actual sightseeing per day. Therefore, it does not really matter what time I actually venture out. Today’s plan was to wander down to an auto-rickshaw stand in the center of Panaji and catch a ride over to Velha Goa, or Old Goa to the English-speaking world. Old Goa is now pretty much deserted, but five centuries ago it had been the beating heart of Portuguese India. As I strolled along down the hill into town, I found myself stuck behind a western tour group about forty people deep. It was ... read more

Today we got the bus to old Goa. This was a surprisingly straightforward venture and very cheap (10p each!). We were lucky enough to get seats on the way there, although we had to stand on the way back. Old Goa used to be the Portuguese capital of Goa, with a population greater than that of London in the 16th to 18th centuries. Unfortunately they had to move the capital to Panaji in 1843 due to Malaria and Cholera. The area is now a world heritage site and full of old churches and cathedrals to see. On arrival we were surprised at how small the area is and how little there is in terms of cafes or places to eat. The guidebook recommends a day trip there but unless you’re particularly interested in the archeology museum ... read more

MARMAGOA & OLD GOA, GOA, INDIA. Sunday 18 March, 2012. The ship was late but immigration was pretty slick. We were doing a ship tour this stop (our first) so we were treated to the preferential treatment that all the tours get and were processed first. The tour was called Spices with Spiritual Insights with Old Goa. Goa is the smallest state in India with a population of 1.4 million. Goa was ruled by the Portugese for 451 years, only ending in 1961 when the Indians took over. This has left Goa with a blend of two cultures from two continents. Christians still number one third of the population. Among the paddy fields, wayside Crusifixes alternate with Hindu Shrines. After boarding the coach we were taken to Old Goa. Old Goa has been abandoned since the ... read more

Yesterday was a day without yoga practice, so as I had planned I decided to visit Old Goa. This was "the big city" when the Portuguese were here and Old Goa is known for its churches, cathedrals, convents, etc. So after breakfast, I took the bus to Panjim first, and then to Old Goa. Taking the bus... Well, for people who have never been in India, maybe I should mention a few things. Buses are very frequent here, not expansive, but also not so comfortable. Well, they get VERY crowded and the drivers can be a bit...hum...crazy. Usually there is a driver and then a "manager". I don't really know how they are called but these guys work their bums off... They can say the destination of the bus at a rate of probably 3 times ... read more

Day 4 Wednesday was mainly wasted due to the night’s activities; we both woke up at 5pm. We decided to go of to Baga; which is the big touristy spot of Goa. The taxi dropped us all the way at the bottom on Baga beach, we went and found this lovely restaurant that was actually on the beach, it was all open aired under roofing, the tables and chairs being cleared away during the day, just being used as a bar area. The waiter came over and we ordered; I ordered a Goan fish curry and Sam ordered some kind of prawn dish, we ordered two sides (or what we thought were sides at the time), two naan breads (one as a starter whilst we waited for our meals and one with the meals) and a ... read more

Hello my fellow travelers! This is the third and final post about my trip to India in 2005 together with my parents and my uncle Anders. The last post covered our jungle excursion while this one covers our visit to Old Goa. In the days between our jungle trip and this one we just rested at the hotel with little to nothing happening. My father got another massage for his back, my mother and Anders lay by the pool while I photographed the animals and bought a small statuette of Buddha. I still have it at home and since my conversion it now sits as the centerpiece of my Buddhist altar at home. We went to Velha Goa together with the couple living in bungalow next to us. It is an old city that was constructed ... read more
