Contrary to popular belief, Assam is actually not only teeming with insurgents and tribals. There are a group of people who have a different association with Assam and swear by it - the lovers of tea. The life long tea drinkers who can smell the difference between a darjeeling, assam or south indian brew. In their hearts, Assam holds a fond place for its tea is considered to produce one of the world’s finest liquor. Assam’s landscape would be incomplete without miles of tea bushes - its own green gold. The Tea Industry in Assam is symbolic of a different era, a different set of people and a completely unique culture and lifestyle. As soon as you enter through the gates of a tea estate, one has literally left present day and is transported to the colonial ... read more

I'm writing to you from an internet cafe in Guwahati (Assam), back to where I was on Tuesday. We had to come back through here to get to our next destination...Darjeeling! Looking forward to many nice cups of tea there. Yestarday we travelled in the area surrounding Shillong where we saw the 'Elephant falls' (waterfalls) and Shillong peak (viewpoint from which you can see Bangladesh). There's a huge milatary presence around here and they are quite strict about security. After our tour aorund Shillong we headed for Lake Umiam. We stayed in a resort on the lake last night and had a very lazy afternoon and evening and morning today. The scenery is stunning, the nicest party of India I've see by far! Went out on the Lake on a pedalo this morning. Didn't have too ... read more

After having frogs in Kohima, it came to me to continue on to other parts of Nagaland... Maybe out there, was another better frog...? A magical frog... One which you can lick and get a nice acid flashback... Hmmm frogs... Anyway, we decided to try for Tuensang and see if we could catch a glimpse of some more tribes... But in the end it started raining again so we didn't see much more than the inside of our room and Tuensang itself is not very interesting... Still the ride there was beautiful and along the way I got to see a drunk tank which I wouldn't like to spend the night in... Talking about your acid flashbacks... So after one rainy day, we decided to leave Nagaland for the plains, our destination... Majuli Island, the world’s ... read more

Went to Bharigow yesterday, where my Dad grew up. It's about four hours drive from the capital Guwahati and although the drive is scenic, passing through villages and endless countryside, it isn't very comfortable for the back! The roads are generally quite poor but it is reassuring to see some road constructors busy at work - long time overdue, some of the pot holes are large enough to farm fish! Visited the house my Dad, now a successful GP, started his first years - and maaan has he come a long way! The difference between my upbringing in Liverpool and the life of my grandparents, even my father is astonishing. We have neat boxlike gardens, bog standard B&Q purchased flowers growing beside neat, artificial looking grass whereas my Dad's garden, or back yard if you ... read more

I wake after a fitful sleep on the top bunk of our second class sleeper, still depressed at being on the train, still depressed with the way our trip has been going lately; all the illnesses, the hassles, broken bikes, arguments with each other, this just wasn’t the way it was supposed to be. Is this what I gave up a decent job and life back home for, to travel around India getting pissed off with the place, the people, Erika and now even myself? I wonder about just going home, but to what? Sure it would be good to see family and friends again but it seems like a bad and sad way to end things - for so long this trip has been so amazing and I always imagined it ending on some kind ... read more

Kaziranga National Park is one of the last refuges for the one-horned rhinoceros. We also got to see wild elephants and wild water bufalo for the first time. Much of the park was covered with very tall grass and open meadows, which were great for viewing the rhinos and elephants. There were also a few tigers in the park, but we only caught a quick glimpse of one. This was the first park where they brought guns with us on the safaris. Sometimes the wild elephants and rhinos can become aggressive, especially if there are young ones around. They have been known to charge the jeeps, but usually can be scared off with a shot in the air. We didn’t have any problems though. We got to ride trained elephants once at the park. To get ... read more

From Khajuraho we flew to Delhi and spent a night at a hotel near the airport. All of the internal flights we took for the Sierra Club trip were on Jet Airways Airlines. The planes were just like any jet planes you take in the States with about 30 or so rows of seats and a meal on flights longer than a couple hours. One nice feature was that they had English language newspapers (The Times of India and The Hindustan Times) in front of every seat instead of the Skymall advertisement magazines on American flights. They also passed around a basket of mints and hard candies at the beginning of every flight. The meals were pretty good with a choice of “veg” or “non-veg”. If you didn’t ask by default they would give you the ... read more

Summary: A bit boring I'm afraid I go on mostly about language, a posh english guy and how i'm accumulating so many phone numbers i can probably open a local telephone directory soon. This place is 'off the beaten track' and recieves little to no foreign tourists - it does however get a steady flow of Indian tourists. Guwahati has a few mildly interesting sites but nothing amazing as yet - I haven't been to the Kamakyah sacraficial temple yet. It's importance comes as a central hub to the surrounding area and Indians arrange tours to National parks etc from here. It is however good to get a feel of a completely different type of India. People here are different and coupled with the lack of westerners this means you get a very different impression of ... read more
