Enis in Chater Park
We walked through this small but lovely park on our way to the Peak Tram. Hong Kong Day II - Victoria Peak here we come! We actually got up early and I forget now where we had breakfast, but I think we ate at Pacific Coffee Company. This place is great and we ended up going here every day. Their coffee is so good (I recommend the caramel latte!) and even the food is good. They have lovely pastries, and it is about the same price as Starbucks, maybe cheaper, but so much better.
After breakfast we took the metro across the river and walked to the Peak without the use of a map since the signs are so good. We wanted to take the tram, of course, so we followed the signs for Peak Tram. To ride the tram costs about 36 HKD each round trip, unless you want to go to the top of the Sky Terrace, which is basically the top of the shopping mall at the top of the Peak. Now, I'm not sure why people want to do that given that the pollution is so bad it doesn't make any difference if you're in the mall, outside the mall at the Lion's Head lookout, or on top of the mall,
but people do pay extra to go up there. I had a feeling it wouldn't matter so we didn't go up there, and I'm glad. It doesn't matter. It's a rip-off. You'll get just as good views by taking a walk around the Peak.
We walked the loop around the Peak and had great views of the pollution over the harbour. We could even see buildings on the other side of the harbour! The walk around the Peak is lovely, and there are others but we just did the 3.5 km loop. We also went to the Lion's Head lookout, which was crowded and not that big a deal I thought. On the Peak there is a big shopping mall shaped like an anvil, and the Sky Terrace is the top of the anvil. That's all well and good, I suppose, but why would you pay all that extra money to go shopping up there when you can buy all the same stuff for less at the bottom? Anywho, the tram ride is really cool. We took the tram back to the bottom and decided to go buy our tickets for the harbour cruise that evening.
We walked
The Peak Tram
It is a lovely shade of red. back to Pier 7 to Star Ferry Cruises and purchased a ticket for the 7:10 cruise for 110 HKD each. Then we walked to the restaurant/bar at the top of Pier 7 to relax since we had a lot of time before the cruise took off. Had lovely, but expensive, drinks there, then I decided that while we were on Hong Kong Island, we should find the world's longest escalator and ride it just for the hell of it. So we found it, finally. It is actually a moving sidewalk that is in three sections, and it is long. And crowded. But very cool. While you're riding you can look in the windows of the shops, salons, restaurants. It is part of an area called SoHo that is also a great place to eat and drink. We didn't, but it had a great atmosphere.
The moving sidewalk only goes up, so we walked back down and headed toward the harbour to our cruise. We wanted a night cruise so we could get good photos of the skyline and see the light show. Oh how naive we were! Everyone wanted on the front of the boat to see the light
Enis and Pierce
I told Enis this wasn't the real Pierce Brosnan, but he wanted his pic taken with him anyway. show, so we were surrounded by Indians and mainland Chinese tourists. I was not pleased. Enis was excited anyway. I took a few photos of the skyline and then headed inside for some peace. He stayed outside to watch the light show.
We were pretty tired after the ride, so we went to McDonald's for some french fries and back to the hotel to rest up for another day of sightseeing and eating tomorrow. This was a good day.
