Constructed in 1778, the minaret rises like a graceful chimney or like a ciggar. It was built in Iranian style with some unusually and elaborately decorative brickwork. Access to the tower has been closed.

In the smoldering, summer heat, Lanzhou city, the capital of Gansu, emerges in the background. The Yellow River flows below, and it is truly a brown-yellow! The river carries sediments in its strong currents, giving it this color.

Lanzhou is one of starting points of the Ancient Silk Road, and Moslem influence remains a strong social force. The grand new mosque of Lanzhou has only recently been completed. The great differences of Moslem traditions, customs, and foods, and even language keep many locals from closer interaction. Trade and commerce seem to be the only common denominator.

The cliff-carvings escaped the excessive ravages of the Cultural Revolution and remain in surprisingly good condition and is well worth the boat journey to this 196 foot high gorge.

Wife and husband greeted me outside their traditional Mongolian tent or "ger" on the steppes of Inner Mongolia. A 3 hour drive brought me to the lush hills and mountains NE of Chifeng. Chifeng is located in the far East of Inner Mongolia.

Travelling along the DMZ, the rainy weather matched the mood of this troubled region of the Korean Peninsula, where conflict could has never been settled by the signing of a peace treaty. Here, the world is officially still in a state of war.

Travelling along the DMZ, and waiting for the train to take us only a few hundred yards from the artifical border of North Korea and South Korea, Military Police keep a close eye on all the visitors.
