Going to Beijing after spending a week out in the sticks was quite a breath of fresh air. Not literally of course, as Beijing has some of the worst air quality in the world. Once a month, the school has agreed to have a driver bring me to and pick me up from Beijing. Getting to Beijing by car was easy, but not exactly fast. The ride takes just under 3 hours. Of course, I thought we would make it there in about 1hour, as the driver the school provided went a casual 160kph. However, we hit some traffic once we approached civilization, and we had to slow down to more appropriate speeds. I have since looked up how to say “slow down,” in Chinese. I appreciate getting to Beijing quicker, but I also appreciate getting ... read more

Things here aren't exactly what I was expecting, nor are they what I was told to expect. The people at the school (which is not the company that hired me) are really nice and helpful, but I'm still working out how I feel about the situation. I was told that I would be living and working in Tangshan City, which is 1hour from Beijing by train. I was really excited about this because it would allow me to get to Beijing very easily, as well as facilitate travel to other parts of China over long weekends. Instead, I find myself in the west of Luannan County, next to a town. Outside my apartment window I can see an open area, and a pig farm. Yes, a farm. I can reach Tangshan City, which is 50 kilometers ... read more

After a total of 22 hours of travel time (15 of which were spent in the air), I made it to China in one piece. I was met at the airport by the Assistant to the Director of the International Department. As the native English teacher, I am apparently a part of the International Department. We arrived at the school's campus just before 11p.m. Because it was so dark, I wasn't able to get much of an impression of the campus or the areas that we drove through. When I walked into my apartment, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it totally exceeded my expectations. After Korea, I was pretty much ready to settle for anything that had atleast two doors and didn't have a kitchen that double as a living room that tripled as ... read more

Ok so it’s been quite a long time since I’ve updated this therefore some of the things in this blog are a little outdated, but I have been meaning for ages to get around to writing this and telling you all about the way I celebrate the holidays over here in China. Firstly I’m just going to say that it's only because I am a foreigner and that I work for an American company that these holidays were celebrated to the extent that they were! I'll start with Halloween. Halloween isn't something that is traditionally celebrated in China, however in the shops there were costumes and masks for sale and there were some pumpkins to be found albeit they were tiny. This is one thing that I am beginning to notice about China, that all of ... read more

Hey all, so this is just a quick blog to update you guys on what I am up to at the minute. To be honest probably don't have time to be sitting here writing this but I thought, what the hell I need a little break ! So it's all go, go, go at the minute. Two weeks ago we had mid term exams. Each of us foreign teachers had to orally test each of our students individually from age 7upwards, the very young classes don't have exams. I had over 80 students to test in one weekend so believe me it was an intense weekend for both us and the kids. For the most part they all did pretty good, the exams weren't too difficult thankfully. However I did get the odd blank stare when ... read more

So it's hard to believe that I've been in China now almost 2 months, up to now I have talked relatively little about China it’s hard to know where to start really, I have so much to say as always!! This blog therefore will be considerable longer than the others as I will try and include as much detail about living in China as I can. All of you that know me well (actually you don’t even have to know me that well) know I love to talk so this blog may go on a bit, but feel free to take a break, have a cup of tea or go to the shop in between reading this. Or you can completely abandon reading it all together I won’t be offended it’ll just be similar to when ... read more

So I arrived in China 3 days ago and its finally time for me to set up this blog. What inspired me most to do this is the fact that the Chinese govenment have facebook blocked so this is gonna be my main method of contact from now on. So first I'll talk about China and what I am at now then I'll backtrack on the last two months and add some pictures. So I'm living in Tangshan which is in the Hebei province of Northern China, roughly 2 and 1/2hrs from Beijing. I am starting teaching this weekend. I am working in a school that is run by the American company Aston who have english schools in about 40 different locations throughout China. My school is owned and run by Eddie, an american and his ... read more
