Last weekend in Hong Kong was amazing. It has definitely made my list for top favourite cities I have ever been to! We woke up really early on the Thursday morning to catch the ferry from the mainland over, which went very smoothly and we got into Hong Kong around 930am. We headed to the Visa center to get that over with and then moved onto our hostel to get the bags off our back and rest for a bit! The hostel was in an awesome area of the city, right on Nathan St and about a block from the Harbour. For my first hostel experience it was great - the place was clean and tidy and the people were awesome. Courtney and I had our own private room with two twin beds and a bathroom ... read more

We’ve been here ONE MONTH! It is such a crazy feeling – I have never been away from home for this long before. But it’s been such an eventful month! I love it more each day, my job the people the place! Everything is going so well here, I couldn’t be happier! Last weekend, Courtney and I went and got bikes FINALLY. My life has been significantly better since! Not only am I saving so much money not having to get a motor taxi to and from work every day, but it’s amazing exercise and I am able to do so much more a day! Walking was great because everything is relatively close together in the city we’re in, but it took up most of our nights getting to and from places. Now that we have ... read more

It’s been a crazy busy few days, but awesome nonetheless. We took care of our mouse problem, and I am sorry to say that Stuart Little is no more. But now I can sleep at night and not have to dream that the mouse is in my bed, so that’s a plus! We have barely been home this weekend. Thursday night we went to BBQ Square for beers after Chinese lessons and learnt how to play an awesome Chinese drinking game – it’s name is unknown to me, but the jist of it is that you have 5 dice in a cup, and you have to shake the cup upside down on the table. You reveal the dice only to yourself and then pretty much play “Cheat” (the card game) but with your dice. It’s honestly ... read more

We have hit our two week mark of being here in China!! Yay us! I’m into my second week of teaching and loving every minute of it. Of course there’s those few children who are the class clowns, but I find them so entertaining at times that I don’t mind it as much as I would if I were at home. Today I walked into my Grade 2 class in the morning and said “GOOD MORNING!” The class chanted back “Good Morning Teacher Lauren, How are you Today?” – however, one boy in the first row decided to go against the grain chanting “Good morning my baby!”. Another student from grade three yesterday introduced himself to me as Ice Cream. To each his own, I say! Haha… It’s been a great few days here in China. ... read more

Ni Hao! It’s been another great few days here in China, I can’t believe how well I’m settling and beginning to fall in love with the place! School got way better by the end of the week, and by my third day of classes – a lot of the kids would run up to me, hug me and scream “teacher Lauren! Teacher Lauren! – How are you? Nice to meet you!”. They couldn’t get any cuter, seriously. It feels great knowing that they are already learning my name and remembering me, considering there are SO many of these kids to remember myself, I am recognizing a few more each day. We went to an amazing place for food the other night for dirt cheap prices! The boys introduced us to it and they call it Beer ... read more

Ni Hao! (hello) It’s been a couple of days since I’ve written, so I’ll catch you up on everything that’s been going on … which is A LOT! Got our cell phones here and they are so old school – like, remember those old Nokia phones we used to get so pumped about in high school? Well yea, that’s what I have here – I had the option to get a really sweet and high tech phone but, I don’t really care so I got the cheapest I could find – which turned out to be about 30$ Canadian. (seriously these prices kill me!) It’s awesome to have phones here now, so that we can all text each other and call. We also got to experience a full body massage on Sunday – out. Of . ... read more

We’ve been here for 5 days now, even though it feels like we’ve been here for weeks! This first week has gone by veeery slow, however it’s been the biggest learning experience of my life! I feel like I am already such a stronger and open minded person being here. I can’t wait to see what else is in store and how this experience will change my life from here on out. Yesterday (Friday) Courtney and I traveled to her school to observe the Chinese English teachers in class and get some ideas about how to set up our own classes. It was fantastic, we first observed a grade one class and they were the cutest! All so interested and eager to learn English, it is truly amazing how badly they want to know the language. ... read more

I gotta admit, no matter how homesick I got when I arrived here in China, I am feeling better and better each day and liking my town more and more! Courtney and I have been keeping ourselves busy and doing lots here. I really want to get to know the community and the places to go for good deals and food! Yesterday we went to the mall which is right by our apartment - it's four stories and in the shape of a ring - so each floor is almost like its own department store. It's hard to explain but if you picture a Sears or the Bay that has each designer's things in specific store like settings, it's exactly like that, except each store like setting is actually a store! We found a great salon ... read more

HEY ALL! I am writing this in Courtney and I’s new apartment in China – we have yet to get internet but we ordered it yesterday so hopefully by Friday we will have it! It’s been so hard not to have internet to talk to anyone, so I can’t wait to get that up and running! The flight from Toronto to Hong Kong went a lot better than I had expected – probably because we slept for 10 out of the 15 hours haha. But it went really smooth and we landed in HK at about 5am China time. We took a cab from the airport to the ferry pier and it was such an amazing city to drive through, it’s actually a shame that we couldn’t stay in Hong Kong longer but hopefully we will ... read more

Good Morning Web Wanderer, I lost my passport. An American losing their passport in America is a very stressful event. An American losing their passport thousands of miles from home in the middle of communist China is near unthinkable… well, was unthinkable. Those who know me sadly may not be surprised I lost the only thing I couldn’t afford to lose. Gone was my most valuable item, my most important document, my ticket home, and gatekeeper of all my exploring. As a foreigner in China you need your passport all the time. Going the bank, staying in a hotel, picking up the mail, and most importantly leaving the country. I have since replaced my passport at the American Consulate in Guangzhou. Under the “endorsements” of my new passport it says “see page 51”. On page 51 ... read more
