The area where the hotel is situated is an older part of town (ie. Luohu district). As you can see from the pictures there's quite a few apartment buildings that are really showing their age.

CNN reporter got detained for a couple of hours by Chinese security for reporting on the "Oba-Mao" t-shirt AND refusing to give the t-shirt to them. Here's what it looks like ... internet is still heavily censored by the governement in China.

I'm writing this from my "closet" in MongKok (Hong Kong). No need to worry about censorship.
