The Happy Couple
Aren't they cute? While most of us were traveling around Asia or our respective home countries, two friends decided to get engaged! It was no surprise to anyone since they've been dating for two years and their families met this December. But to go from unofficially engaged to officially engaged is a pretty big deal in my book. Over the break, Jane and Leo traveled to Guilin and other parts of China. On one snowy day, overlooking the view, they sealed their fates with a kiss.
Sufficed to say, when I got the email from her nonchalantly mentioning this, I started screaming with delight, frightening everyone in my hotel lobby, and I'm sure other parts of Phnom Penh. I love it when wonderful couples decide to marry. Can you tell I'm excited?
Shortly after returning from my trip, I emailed a few people in our small group. While Jane and Leo obviously have lots of friends, I thought this group was the group that knew both of them the best and would obviously want to celebrate. So, in the land where nothing is ever planned more than a day in advance, we schemed and plotted for a week.
The plan was
Getting Ready
The table is set. The chairs are coming. this:
I would host and cook the main dinner while everyone else would bring sides and be responsible for getting the happy couple to my apartment. But we needed to figure out how to get them to both save the date and to come to my apartment without arousing suspicion. Finally, a plan was formed, and, under the pretext of a small dinner at Rachel's (to share in some food James brought back from England), we ensured that the night was reserved for us.
The night of the party, just as they were going to dinner at Rachel's, James said he needed to bring some chairs down to my apartment, but he'd hurt his back playing football. Since we needed the chairs for the party, this plan worked perfectly. They agreed with no fuss or questions and the four of them traveled down to my apartment.
As soon as they were in, they noticed and commented on the nice table spread, not yet figuring anything was afoot. Since it had taken so long to get them both in my door, I was sure the surprise was blown. Still, Toby and Tom jumped out with confetti crackers and we
Ready!
Toby is ready to spray them with confetti poppers. all yelled, "Surprise! Happy engagement party!" They were completely shocked and surprised and speechless. "Wait, what, what's going on? This is for us?" Their faces showed confusion and disbelief. Mission accomplished.
We dined on Italian pasta, rolls, Tom's awesome salad bar, and assorted beverages. Rachel made a few types of cookies and brought some imported chocolates. We shared stories and asked them lots of questions about how they met (both their versions of the story) and what it was like when their families met. We told lots of jokes and other stories, and at one point, Godfrey even stopped by. It was a wonderful meal, shared by close friends for a special occasion. I call that a perfect celebration.
