So i made a great mistake by trusting my research on payment/money prior to my departure ... i'm buying dollars with my euros to then exchange it again into cambodian ril ... however it's best to have ril, as depending where ya wanna buy bottle of water it can cost approx $1 (which is about 3,800 ril), but the moment u get away from the tourists (which obviously i try with the bycicle) you can get same size bottle for 800 ril ... 15 minutes from the busy section of Siem Reap i found myself between tin plate shacks and bamboo huts and was in heaven. Some time during 2004, I was thinking I should do some overland travel in Souteast Asia. Since I had gone over from Singapore to Bangkok a few years ago, a trip starting from Bangkok this time seemed to be the natural choice. I wondered if I could travel from Thailand all the way to China. When I had done my research, I found that there might not be enough time for me. So instead of travelling completely overland, I decided to cheat, i.e. to fly a few sergments here and there. Finally, my route became: Bangkok-(plane)-Siem Reap-(plane)-Ho Chi Minh City-(overland and with intermediate stops)-Hanoi-(overland)-Guilin. This trip almost took me a month. Hey all, In a hot hot town called Siam Reep in Cambodia. Unlike Vietnam, there is a breeze here which is a pleasant surprise because as Eddie Murphy once said, "it's Africa hot!" Siam Reep is where the famous temple Angkor Wat is located. We spent the day at Angkor Wat yesterday and it's amazing. It's like being in a piece of art. Not just a piece of art, but the Mona Lisa, because there really aren't any ropes holding you back. You are actually walking on and through this 900 year old masterpiece. I feel a bit guilty because I feel like people shouldn't be walking on this wonder. Looking around, it's like a jungle gym for tourists because people are crawling through windows, picking up rocks, and I wonder how long this can last. ... read more

Hello all, First day in Thailand and I don't have much to write about Thailand yet, but I'm sure after seeing the sex show tonight, I'll have much to report... I know it's not surprising, but the amount of western men with Asian women is astounding. But it makes sense. The only way many of the women could have a better life is either raise enough money to go to another country or marry a foreigner. When you earn $1 a day, it's easier to hit the foreigner angle and if you can't make it to another country, at least you can have the guy spend his money on you. If one has ever seen the earlier movies of Mel Gibson (such as "Mad Max" and “Thunderdome”), one might be able to envision the sites one saw unfolding around them as they attempted to pass through Thai immigration into Cambodia. I am in Cambodia, which is a change from the diving island paradise of Ko Tao. I arrived in Siam Reap at about 9pm last night. Have got a styley guesthouse for $5US for both of us. The night in Bangkok before we travelled here was excellent, five of us bought some big decorated north-Thailand-hilltribe-women’s' hats and went on a bender. Even got a cheer from half of Gulliver’s (a pub in Khao San Rd) when five of us walked/danced in with the hats on. Standard stuff for Ponsonby Rd but it was received very well here. Stupid kiwis... I was working on the principle that if I got one hours sleep the 13 hour trip would pass quicker due to crashing on the bus. It worked for the Ko Tao - Bangkok trip a day ... read more

The Temples of Angkor would have to be one of the coolest places I've explored. It takes days to see it all, but it rarely dissapoints. In the 12th century, at the height of the Khmer Empire, the population of Angkor (the capital) was around 1 million, while London, England was still only 40 thousand. How things have changed.
