We have been in Cambodia for the past four days and have welcomed the change of scenery. The landscape is very different here in comparison to Thailand- it is very wet and swampy with the mark of three decades of civil war clearly visible. We were advised by the guest house we are staying in to make sure we get in the right car upon arrival, as it is common for names to be leaked and people to hold up signs with your names on to try and make a few dollars. We followed their advice and arrived at our guesthouse safely. Before we had arrived in Cambodia we were a little curious as to what to expect, due to the unrest that had overwhelmed this country during the years of the rule of the Khmer ... read more

Today we found my favorite temple: Banteay Srey. It's an hour away by tuk tuk, and I wouldn't want to try that bumpy road perched on the back of a moto after the Bokor experience. Since I suppose most of my readers don't have the Cambodian Lonely Planet handy, and the book can put it much better than I, I'm including a quote here: "Banteay Srei is a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva. Considered by many to be the jewel in the crown of Angkorian art, the temple is cut from stone of a pinkish hue and includes some of the finest stone carving seen anywhere on the planet... Banteay Srei means "Citidel of the Women" and it is said that it must have been built by a woman, as the elaborate carvings are too fine ... read more

We went back for the sunset at Angkor Wat because that's supposed to be the best time of the day to see it. This also means it's the best time of the day to see just how many tourists there are at the temples. I finally saw the crowds, after avoiding them so perfectly the other days. We were expecting it to rain any minute, but it held off, though the "perfect light" everybody comes to photograph Ankgor in was somewhat diminished by the overcast. We did have a good time sitting around in the first stages of dusk, watching the tourists come and go, clicking frantically with their cameras. I did my best to join in, taking far more photos that I need, but eventally tired of it. We went off the main pathway a ... read more

I've gotten pretty good at counting in Khmai: muy, bee, buy... so Bee Day would mean my second day at Siem Reap. The temples we visited this morning were not as massive as Angkor, but just as majestic and full of mystery. One question I still can't find an answer to is if they stones were carved in place or, if they were carved somewhere else and assembles later at the temple site. The day's itinerary included Bayon, Preah Khan, Ta Som, Neak Pean and then the Roluos Group, which are temples another 20km away. We made it to Bayon by 5:30 and had the place to ourselves, even the guards nuns and vendors weren't there yet. Nuns give out insence for a "donation" so you can offer insence to the altars they set up around ... read more

I'm glad we waited a couple weeks instead of coming here first thing. The anticipation has been building and it was well worth the wait. Anisa suggested going to see sunrise over Angkor Wat, the main temple, which sounded like a wonderful idea to me. I didn't realize that if we watched the sunrise at 6am we would have to leave town in our tuk tuk at 5am, which meant waking up around 4"3O am. It was easier than I thought it would be and was a pleasure to be up at that hour since it's not swelteringly hot and humid at 5am. 7am is another matter. That sun is strong. The temples. I'm not sure I can put them into words. I tried to write in my journal earlier and came up with lots of ... read more

Sua s'dai! That's hello in Khmer! (I learned that from a 22 year old Buddhist Monk at Angkor Wat today). Siem Reap is simply amazing... I can't even begin to express what it's like to be here. The 11th century temples of Angkor and the complex history of the Khmer Empire is one thing, but the feeling I get from the people here is undescribable. I'm not sure if that comes from being a small town in the province of Siem Reap, or if its simply the Cambodian way. I have an inkling its a little of both. Yesterday, I hired a local man named Vigol to take me to Angkor on the back of his motorbike. (Now, Nanny, don't worry, the thing couldn't push 20 km/h if it wanted to), Angkor is made up of ... read more

Well since last writing we have been to a place called sukothai to breajk up the journey from chang mai to bangkok, this was another old capital city with polenty of temple ruins, alot like ayyuthaya but much better laid out. Again we hired bikes but this time remebered sunscreen, Stayed in a lovely guesthouse. An old teakhouse on stilts over a frog pond. It was beautiful. We then made our way back to bangkok to arrange our coach to siem reap in cambodia. We spent plenty of time shopping in khao san road. The journey from bangkok to siem reap was incredible. For anyone who has ever done it you will know what i mean but for those who havent: You get picked up from bangkok in a lovely vip bus ours was half empty ... read more

Good Morning, I am in Siem Reap, Cambodia. For those who don't know, this is home to the incredible temples of Angkor. I'm told they're the largest and most impressive religious structures in the world. I'm on my way to see them today. (I've hired a driver to take me!) So I hop on a little regional jet yesterday in Bangkok and took the 55 minute flight to Siem Reap. My other option was to take a 12 hour (non-air conditioned) bus for about 10 dollars, but I really didn't think that was such a bright idea after stepping off a 14 hour overnight train from the south of Thailand. So, I treated myself. And boy, am I glad I did. I also heard some pretty dodgy stories about that bus ride. I need not worry ... read more

After leaving Jon in Trat, I headed for the border hoping to get across before closing. I decided to change course and enter from the coast, the Swedish gals said the road most directly to Siem Reap took 7 hours but only a distance of 150km! I chose the vomit class high speed ferry instead. This baby was shaped for pain, around 90 feet long but only 15 feet wide and loaded with several hundred crates of questionable food at the back it didn't take much to realize this boat's front end would shoot out the water if there was any chop. And there was, I lost count when I resorted to putting my head between my legs but I heard at least 5 people vomit. It sounded like Ferris Bueller's keyboard. The first stop was ... read more

After a relaxing stop off in the four thousands islands in the far south of Laos, I was headed for Cambodia. After some issues at the border over my dual-nationality, I was in and after bartering myself a spot on a speedboat (wooden boat with huge engine and propeller strapped on back - not luxury sports toy!) I arrived in the first major town Stung Treng. Here the journeys started to get really interesting as Cambodia has some of the worst roads anywhere in the world and we were about to follow one that hadn't seen attention in a long time. Lonely Planet had this fitting description: "the last of the major highways which hasn't been upgraded. 141km of pain and torture". Which it was! The road, or series of interconnected craters which I think would be ... read more
