Well, we have been in cambodia for 3 days now....its hot! Spent the first couple of days in siem reap after flying in from laos. Only been there an hour and headed straight to the angkor wat to see the sunset. Beautiful view from up there and a gorgeous place to watch the sun go down...... next day up and at it early to hire bikes and cycle to the temples of angkor. Interesting ride and a bit sketchy in places, cambodia seems to have a free for all mentality on the roads......

The temples are amazing, hard to believe how they was built around a 1000 yrs ago. Check out the pics to get a better idea. There is one that is so overgrown with buttress trees but this only adds to the beauty.

There are loads of monkeys knocking around the temples and they are friendly enough and such good fun to watch.

On the cycle home we saw a childrens orphanage and asked if we could spend some time with the children. Within 10 mins we was sat with the kids who shared their rice with us. I instantly knew i wanted to spend more time there so asked if we could help with anything and we was asked to help with english. We both thought we wud be helping with reading/writing etc then adam mentioned he was a teacher and before we knew it we had been given a class each...............thankfully we had english books to refer to and was shown where the children was already up to. After an initial "shit what do i do moment" i just went with it and it turned out to be an hour never to be forgotten by both me and the kids. They was so keen to learn and already had excellent english skills. Lucky for me their regular teacher sat in with me to help if i needed it. Must have done an ok job as he asked if i would come back the day after, honestly if we wasnt leaving we would have done.

I thought it would be sad to visit an orphanage as id read that some in cambodia are exploited as a tourist attraction. Thankfully this one wasnt and the children are very much at the heart of everything. It is government regulated with strict child protection policies in place. The fact we just turned up without any prior notice proved nothing was staged for tourists an the children was happy, clean, well fed and well educated ( well perhaps not much so in my lesson....... 😉

Check out the pics of our rascals, both of us well and truly smitten and couldnt stop talking about it all night.

We have now moved and are in battambang, another colonial type town with a nice vibe. We have treated ourselves to a nice hotel for a few days.

Peace out y'all xx

It sounds like you will not want to come home. I hear from anyone that has visited that it touches you like no other place and many people return again and again. Your 'teaching' day will be a day you will never forget. Sounds absolutely amazing, life-affirming and am so happy for you both. Great trip and enjoying your blog! Jase x

adam's busman's holiday!
Hi guys, this blog actually made me cry. I just want to go and look after elephants and volunteer in an orphanage! What an amazing, life changing experience your'e both having. Isn't this really something which means so much more than all our western gadgets and technology? I'm really pleased for you both to have this experience. Adam, it must have been so special for you to teach a class of children who were appreciative of your knowledge instead of your naughty year tens!! xx
