After 2 days off from temple spotting, today we reached for our passes and hit the ground running. We managed to visit a staggering 6 different temples today, so here's a brief run-down of each one (if I can remember which was which!) 1. Preah Khan - biggish temple with huge trees growing through parts of it. Cool :-) 2. Neak Pean - small central temple surrounded by 4 large pools of water (no water today though). Base of the temple is 2 entwined coiled serpents. Nice enough and a bit different to other temples but not mind-blowing. 3. Ta Som - pretty temple in good nick and away from main tourist trail. A nice temple to see if you've not seen any before and still good if you have. 4. East Mebon - good-sized temple ... read more

This is just a short one (full Thailand one to come soon you lucky people) as we did a little side trip to Cambodia with Beckys sis and Benny boy to the largest religious monument and highest concentration of temples (I may have made this bit up) in the world. The Temples of Angkor. Basically there were hundreds of amazing huge temples all round the place, built by the Khymer from 8th Century AD for Buddist, Hindu and local gods. Which they somehow "lost" for a few hundred years and then found again. I think they were behind the sofa but its always where you look last - but then thats because you stop looking after that. Anyway they were so impressive - especially some of the really atmospheric temples which are left in their unrepaired ... read more

Okey dokey folks, this selction of pics is from our second day in Siem Reap where we took a share taxi to some of the further away temples of the Rolous Group, Beng Melea (another of our favourite temples) and Benteay Srei (small but perfectly formed). I hope you're not getting all templed out yet as there's loads more photos to come! ... read more

It's easy to see why many people might get all templed out here in Angkor but something tells me it's not going to happen to us! Today we joined an American brother and sister for a shared taxi ride around some of the further flung temples in the area and once again, we were not disappointed. We started early, at 8am with our first stop at Bakong Temple. Nice temple featuring carved elephants guarding each corner of a number of terraces that stacked up to form a pyramid with a shrine at the top. Unfortunately, Eddie and Sarah's temples passes had expired so they weren't allowed entry but it was one of those temples that was really nice but not necessarily the most amazing thing you've ever seen. One thing that did excite me as we ... read more

Ok folks, brace yourselves for some of the most wonderful photos yet added to the blog. The temples of Angkor really are so amazing that not even a few snapshots will give you much of a glimpse of all the wonders that we saw there. This selection features the temples of Ta Prohm made famous in the Tomb Raider movie, the Temple of the Leper King, Terrace of the Elephants and Bapheon Temple. Pictures of the great Angkor Wat will be in a separate entry so keep your eyes peeled! Enjoy :-))... read more

You can't come to Siem Reap without embarking on a tour of the temples. Today we had our first experience of the grace, grandeur and awe of Angkor, the name for the whole area where the hundreds of temples are clustered. Today is also Glynn's birthday so we had to do something spectacular to celebrate - and you don't get more spectactular than this... The temples and religious ruins are scattered over a huge radius where Siem Reap town is the jumping off point so we hired ourselves a tuk tuk driver for the day for 12 dollars. A 7-day temple pass cost 60 dollars each but we didn't think the 3-day pass would be enough to satiate our desire to explore so we went for the big one. First stop - Ta Prohm for our ... read more

Our second day started with us moving 'home' to a 'The Continental Cafe' just around the corner, the people here were really nice and gave you, what looked like a genuine smile. Borey then picked us up at 8:30 for more temple spotting. Yesterday really tired us out but we were now refreshed and we had saved Angkor Wat for today, plus Melissa had talked me into going up in the baloon for a panoramic view of Angkor. How was it I here you ask?? Quite scary, very quick and again expensive at 15$, but we did get some good views around the flat countrside with Angkor Wat in the Background. Next stop was the much hyped Angkor Wat!! Could it live up to expectations? We don't know! It was great to walk around, but its ... read more

So why did we go to Siem Reap??? To see the Angkor Temples!! Everyone and their mother who we have met on our travels so far seem to have seen them, so this was our turn. Could they live up to the expectation?? You will have to read on to find out. We were up at 7:00am, this is now an early start for us!! We then had to find a nice cheap tuk-tuk driver for the day or two. We did, his name was Borey and for 10$, which seems to be the going rate for a guys services for the day. Even though he did start at 14$ We bought our nice laminated tickets for the temples, which at 40$ for a 2/3 day pass seems to be way out of proportion with anything ... read more

I read in the guide book that Siem Reap means Siam (Thailand) defeated, which the author that was a pretty subtle name for a city so close to the Thai border. Cambodians are supposedly still sore at Thailand for having occupied their temples for 10 years back a couple of hundred years ago. Yesterday morning we set our alarm for 4:30am so we could arrive in time to see the sunrise over the temple of Angkor Wat-the biggest and most famous. It has a huge moat in front so I got some pretty cool pictures of some bright patches of sunlight peeking through the clouds and reflecting over the temple and into the water. I went a little camera happy since each picture seemed better than the last as the sun crept up. We'd climbed up ... read more
