Today its all about recovery on the jungle road along the river, both for the soul and the bruised from the previous day's cramping muscles. We are finally running the Mekong proper and at times the scenery is nothing short of breath taking which can be a bit of an issue when running, so we stop and gaze and wonder if the people who inhabit its banks ever stare at the familiar scene with the same wonder anymore. Of course he who speaks Mekong speaks water and therefore water buffalo, Nat's absolute favorite beast in the world (not)! However, its a bit after the breeding season and the baby buffalo have got the cutest little squeal when calling mama... homely babies have to have some form of appeal. So Nat now runs past the beasts pretending ... read more

Day 1 After an absurdly long drive to the Laos border....sort of the original starting point but not really when looking at our schedule, we finally arrive at the gates, pour out of the vehicle and scurry to get ready... A couple of quick pictures and off and running...One the of the first sights we come across is a small boy carrying the jug of water you see in the picture. His home could be the one shown. Point is, this is why you have helped and donated. Your help could possibly keep kids in school instead of carrying water. THANK YOU! Further along the run, Nathalie thinks she is either having her first hot flash, of epic proportion, or has her core body temperature gauge on overdrive, as sweat seems to be literally pouring down ... read more

So after spending a week on Don Khone, home to the four thousand islands, with Uli, an Austrian couple arrive with my next opportunity for traveling. That's right my own boat to sail down the Mekong on! The 4000 islands quickly first though...... We arrive to find Uli's dream guesthouse and too be honest it turned out to be a great choice. The German band Die Toten Hosen are playing whilst the owner is having his end of year clear out so we each grab one of the riverside huts and spend the next few days relaxing and recovering from our bike ride. Whilst we are there we spend most of our time reading on our balconies, one day going out for a visit to the real 4000 islands with Mike (guesthouse owner) and the rest ... read more

So after getting to know everyone in the volunteer house, there is not one person i could say a bad word about! i am so lucky! the guy that was here before was saying that the previous group divided into team america and team austrailia! instead this year it is just team britain!! during our orientation week, we took a trip to the CRDT project in streung treng which is about 7hours drive from phnom penh! *note* i am volunteering with a school called CWF (conversations with foreigners) and they help people who want to improve their language skills after school or work. it is quite cheap for the three months, but all the money left over from supplying the school is sent to the various CRDT (cambodian rural development) projects, run by the same people. ... read more

WELCOME CAMBODIA TRAVEL We had no problems crossing the boarder as we already had visa, only had to pay stamp duty. Arriving to Stung Trent was interesting, from here we wanted to head towards Siem Reap, however apparently the roads towards west are no good, you have to go through Phonon Penh... how much... $20 each... don't think so, that was the quote we got from the guy who took us across the boarder.... bit of asking around and we went by taxi for $11 each... however how little did we know about travelling in Cambodia... TAXI ... how many can you fit in? 4 at the back, bit of squeeze and 3 at the front, actually if the grumpy Chinese man would not be with us it would be 4 at front as well. 6 ... read more

It seems to be taking longer to leave here than was expected. While waiting for Sophat to tie up ends at home, I have found myself literally bumping into various ex-pat volunteers stranded in this riverside rubbish pit. Another British midwife, Kathy, here on a two year contract....what is it about us Brits? Oh, Sophat graces me with his presence. Time to load up the bike and leave. Ciao.... read more
