And so, Templed to the max, off we head east to counteract built splendor with a bit of wildness (not quite wilderness) and relaxation. We got an, as usual, early bus (late buses do not exist, its not that we are hardcore travelers...no option) from Siem Reap to Kratie, changing bus at Kompong Cham. This second bus wasn't quite ready for us and it turned out there were too many people for the minibus. But that's simply normal, they crammed us in somehow and off we headed for a nice cosy journey in our neighbours armpits, the boot open with our luggage strapped on as we bounced along a deep red dirt track, dust curling in through any orifice of the minibus to give us a rosy hue. We pulled in to Kratie with our bags ... read more

After another uneventful journey to Kompong Cham we were dropped off and immediately swamped by moto drivers all keen to 'help' us. As we'd decided not to stay here and literally just stop overnight to use the ATM we went straight to the bus company office we'd come on to ask about onward travel for the following day to our new chosen destination of Mondolkiri Province. Sadly Ratanakiri had been knocked out as we didn't think we'd have enough time to spend there and these days we'd rather not visit somewhere at all than make a flying visit of it and wish we had longer. Sophie was a little put out when she was told that the ticket would be $13, especially as she'd read that a ticket from Phnom Penh was only $10 so how ... read more

Hello again, just a quick one from us before the electricity is turned off again! Since our last blog we took a long old bus ride north to a place by the Mekong. It was absolutely stunning and was all the better as we took a boat trip out, just the two of us and the man on the back for 90 minutes cruising around spotting the rare irrawady dolphins at sunset. It was incredible and so nice to be away from the busy cities. Today we have so far had a bone crunching day in search of the unbeaten track. It began at 7.30 until 4 pm when we arrived at Sen Monorom. The trip was interesting...we took a locals pick up service which involves pilling high a toyota pick up with 2 crates and ... read more

Relieved to leave Phonm Penh I headed to Snoul by bus where I was told I could get a share taxi to Sen Monorom as buses no longer ran that route. Five and a half hours later in Snoul “service station” I asked a couple of minibuses if they were heading to Sen Monorom. No. I asked at the “gas station”, one man and his 20 glass coke bottles filled with fuel. No, he couldn’t help. Some young Cambodians from my bus came to my rescue and asked around for me amazed that I wanted to go there. I explained there was some pretty hiking there. This obviously was not a sufficient answer so I quickly added that there were also elephants there and we don’t have them in England. Made a little more sense but ... read more

Only one full day left in enigmatic Cambodia. It's going to be such a shame to leave this incredible country as there's so much, all in the details, that we're going to miss. Here are some of the minutiae that make up the crazy whole that we love so much:- Khmer food (especially Lok Lak and the supremely delicious Amok), local markets selling the living, barely living and very much dead creatures of this country (you can ascertain the level of life by the number of flies - the more flies, the deader it is), the gorgeous red dust tan, counting the number of hello's received as we walk through a new village and the most beautiful smiles as we return the greeting, the happy serendipity of arriving, randomly, at the perfect guest house after a ... read more

In memory of my Grandma, an inspiration when it came to dealing with my travel-bug. She would have loved hearing about this trip. Sorry this entry has taken a while to add. We've been in the jungle for a few days, and there was barely any power, let alone an internet connection. Well, our hostel, Nature Lodge had power most of the time only because the guy running it had set up a couple of small turbines in the river at the bottom of his property and was generating his own. Not much though, about 400W, but as most of his light bulbs were 15W energy savers, and there was no fridge etc, 400W was just enough. All the lights dimmed whenever they turned the blender on for a shake or juice, but we could live ... read more

- rano do "miasta"sciagaja z okolicznych wiosek wiesniacy z ogromnymi chyba 40 kg koszami na plecach ... read more

Jezeli kiedys zostane zapytany o to co robilem najbardziej ekstremalnego w moim zyciu z pewnoscia odpowiem - pojechalem do dzungli w Kambodzy podczas pory deszczowej. Jednak szukalem dalej... Moje zainteresowanie ... read more
