There are few zoos in Burma – in fact I had only heard of four (Yangon Zoo, Hlawga Park, Yadanabon Zoo and Naypyitaw Zoo). I had been to the first three but Naypyidaw wasn't really on my route and I didn't think I'd be able to fit it in. However I wouldn't be much of wandering zoo-keeper if I missed out what was supposed to be the largest and newest zoo in Burma, so at Lake Inle I came up with a possibly-to-be-regretted plan for my last few days in the country involving a succession of night buses, very little sleep and no showers for the following 60-odd hours. (In case you're wondering, a wandering zoo-keeper is much like a wandering minstrel except with less musical talent). I will cover all of this in separate blogs, ... read more

Five hours on a bus is a long time if the woman next to you is puking the entire way. I feel badly for her. She's young and pretty and pale and sweaty. She's going to Yangon, I'm getting down at Bago so she can puke in private. The motor cycle taxi driver tells me it's 10,000 kyats to get me from the bus stop to my hotel. Outrageous!! I can't do...then we straighten it out--he means 1,500 kyats. Okay, good. The bag and I get on his bike, and we drive through a noisy, crowded, dusty, busy town with horns blaring. I catch glimpses of gold pagodas. I know this town is full of them and can't wait to fill the next few hours with touring them. The room at the Bago Star is dark ... read more

We could have left Kalaw on an 8:30pm bus which with a 10-12 hour journey time would have us arriving at a more reasonable time but we had chosen the 5:30pm bus for a couple of reasons: it gave us enough daylight to get down the bulk of the mountian road and with the constant wet weather we figured that would be safer travelling in daylight, and secondly we like to see the scenery, doing endless bends in the dark is boring and we have done it many times in South America. It was a good call. There was just us and the locals (we figured most tourists must be on the 8:30pm bus) we got to watch a rather nice sunset, enjoy some stunning scenery and get a glimpse of people's lives on the mountains. ... read more

Another location I couldn't find in the website's database! This time I was in Taungoo in Central Myanmar, just slightly under halfway between Yangon and Mandalay. I'd decided to stop here to break up the nightmarish 12h+ direct ride, but I ended up staying just a little longer than I'd originally planned. I'd arrived mid-afternoon, and was hoping to catch an early bus to Mandalay the next morning, so that I could arrive sometime in the afternoon. However it turned out the buses only left in the evenings, arriving in Mandalay at an unearthly hour. I was initially somewhat annoyed by this as it put paid to some original plans I had. But I have to say the helpfulness of the manager of Myanmar Beauty Guest House where I stayed really put things into perspective. He ... read more

So finally left the beautiful countryside of Hpa An and Southeastern Myanmar, and made my way back west towards Yangon. I wasn't be going back there though, instead I stopped at Bago and will turn north towards Mandalay. I remember telling myself to travel slower since I'm in no hurry anyway, so I'll be making a couple of overnight stops (starting with Bago) in South/ Central Myanmar en route to Mandalay, instead of doing a straight 10-12h bus ride that I don't have particularly fond memories of from 2006. Bago turned out to have quite a lot to see, and I must really chastise LP for getting the scale on its Bago map all wrong! What appeared to be 600m for the stretch of temples on the map was in reality much, much further! The cycle-taxi ... read more

The bus ride from Inle lake to Bago was a lengthy fifteen hour stint. Our plan was to escape the tourist trail and venture down south of Burma in hope we might find even more untouched areas of this formidable country. The bus journey itself filled me with dread when I learnt we would be retracing our steps back over the same route we took in to Inle lake, the one where I witnessed a deeply upsetting incident in the mountains. With no other option but to take this route, we clambered on board a spacious bus with reclining seats, water bottles and flannels. So far so good; I was starting to get used to the inside of tin boxes with plastic seats in the aisles and over loaded above clearly defying gravity. We settled in ... read more

We left Bagan and had a very long day of driving to Bago. We started the trip off by stopping to see a family who had a palm farm. Every day they collect palm sugar from the trees in clay pots. They would have to climb up about 100 trees per day, collect pots from the day before and hang new pots up. They would make sweets and wine from the palm sugar as well as palm oil from the leaves. The rest of the drive was uneventful. We arrived into Bago late at night and stayed at the Mya Nanda Hotel ($20/double). Bago is super busy and noisy. I think its a hub for truck drivers. The restaurant we went to served a variety of goats testicles which we decided not to try. The next ... read more

While waiting for our Indian visa to get sorted, we decided to use the extra time to spend an overnight stay at the nearby small town of Bago. The main draw for visitors in this relatively rustic region is the dozens of unique temples and statues that are scattered in its small area. There are some old sites but there are also many newly built creations to set our eyes on. We arrived in the late afternoon, planning to use the following day to hire a tuk-tuk to explore them. However, on setting out for food, we were informed by helpful tuk-tuk drivers that if we were to go later that afternoon, we could see all the sights but avoid having to pay the heavy government fees that are lumped on them, since their counters close ... read more

23/11/2010 - 25/11/2010 After Yangoon I went more to the centre of Myanmar, to Bago. To dodge the 10 US ticket fee for all sight seeing places (cause all goes to the government) I hired a guy with motortaxi to take me to several places: pagodas, cobra pagoda, cigar rolling factory. Some were quite nice, especially the long lying boedha outside (he claimed that this in fact was the longest one..); the cigar rolling factory was amusing. There were all young women making jokes etc, and in the end quite willing to take a picture together. I did not spent the night in Bago instead I took the bus straight to Kinpun, a small town which grants its popularity to the big 'Golden Rock'. I arrived a in the city quite hungry so I went on ... read more

Bago is a couple of hours south of Yangon and like many Burmese towns gold seems to be the predominant colour of the stuppas and Buddahs which adorn every corner. While some of this is just gold paint much of it is actual gold leaf which locals paste onto holy objects. One such holy object is Golden Rock which is a sweaty five hour uphill walk from a town called Kinpun. Buddhists believe that the rock which teeters at the top of the mountain is supported by two of Buddahs hairs so local men adorn the rock with gold - while the women just look on from afar. With so much poverty and deprivation I have found it hard to accept gold being pasted onto rocks and other objects which are accorded significance. However pasting rocks ... read more
