Up early again! I do not do early what is going on??! River trip today to Mingun, the lovely Peter surprised us as our taxi driver again today but just down to the jetty on the banks of the Irrawady this time. We bought our tickets from the wooden hut and spent the time waiting to board a boat just watching what was going on. There was boats moored up all along the bank and people carrying loads on their heads leaping on and off them. Motorbikes with trailers were delivering supplies and getting stuck in the sandy mud. Women were cooking up meals and men were hanging around. The tour groups and people privately hiring boats got priority and set off quickly, while the rest of us foreigners hung about waiting until the posh lot ... read more

Boarded the Irrawaddy Explorer to have lunch and then took an afternoon tour to a Silk Factory, a gold leaf workshop and then to Amarapura the Royal Capital (1783) to visit U-Bein Bridge at sunset, this is shaping up to be a fabulous trip. The U-Bein Bridge is all teak and the wood was all taken from the deconstructed old palace, it is absolutely magnificent, we had all climbed into little sampans, 4 per boat, and were rowed out to get a prime position for sunset and of course some of the crew from the boat were in another boat coming around to each boat with glasses of champagne, not too shabby!!! Then back to the boat for cocktail hour in the Writers Lounge, definitely not a diet boat this one, staff came around with lovely ... read more

Today is our last day in Mandalay, but since the only sights we haven't seen involve giving money and entrance fees to the government, we decide to take a boat ride up the river to Mingun to see the Mingun Paya. Mingun Paya is the remnants of what was supposed to be Myanmar's largest paya ever. Unfortuantely the earthquake of 1938 cracked in parts and the construction was never completed. As it stands now, it is 240ft high, less than half of the intended final height! That morning we made our way to the jetty to catch the boat 1.5 hours to Mingun. We pay 5000K return each for the boat ride. While we waited for the boat to depart we interacted with some local children. It was clear that many families actually lived in tents ... read more

From Pyin U Lwin we got a share taxi and drove around the posh end of the town picking up a lady who sat in the front (the more expensive seat). Big houses in Pyin U Lwin; People aren't dying of poverty in Myanmar, people look happy and are not hungry, it's not Africa by any means. Back in Mandalay, we went to see a Western movie by trishaw, a very cheap experience and the girls - very pretty. But the film was pretty rubbish, some end of the world-aliens coming to save us rubbish - sort of an Al Gore environmentalist wet dream. Anyway, the next day we organized the a riverboat ride up the Irrawaddy to Mingun...we got the trishaw driver from thn night before to take us. According to Wikipedia... its main attraction ... read more
