Sorry it has taken a while to write again, my internet access hasn’t been great. Since I last wrote I participated in a two day workshop with religious leaders from Uganda, Sudan, the DRC (Congo), Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania. It was in a beautiful hotel in Entebbe and was interesting. The participants were friendly and welcoming to me...a few even gave me their card. I spoke to a woman who is heading up an effort to form collaborations between women’s peacebuilding groups, which is great. She’s in Kenya and invited me to visit her office when I go there. I also spoke a lot to one of the facilitators who was great. He has worked on conflict resolution all over the world and was really friendly. He was also really great during the workshop at ... read more

So, it's 2:30 am (I went to bed at 10 but woke up at 1:30...apparently my timeclock is still off...I have to be up at 6 so I should be sleeping!) and I thought I'd write a little update. So, I had heard the traffic was really bad here and that's VERY true. The roads often look like they're only big enough for one car but they are two way roads, which have cars, motorcycles, bikes, and then pedestrians walking on the side, in addition to some major potholes. So far my biggest challenge here has been crossing the street :) I did meet the owner of the house, who is an Indian man (in Uganda they call Indians Asian and the Asians were kicked out during the Amin era, but he said he was one ... read more

I arrived into Entebbe Airport last night....I was going to take a picture but apparently that's illegal so I decided not to ;) The taxi driver met me out front and I strained to see Entebbe and then Kampala in the dark, although it was hard to see in the dark. Interestingly, even though it was 9pm on a Sunday night, lots of people were out walking on the street and it looked like stores were open and lots was going on. We drove by Lake Victoria, which is apparently pretty but just looked dark :). We went to a gated house in Kampala and I was let in by a Russian ex-pat named Natasha. She was very nice and showed me around. I have a room with a bathroom with hot water for the shower ... read more

Hello there! After 2 weeks of my future hanging in the balance I can finally let you all know what I've been up to for the past couple of weeks! Well I've barely done anything as I've been camping out at backpackers in Jinja bored out of my mind while Ive waited for the office to sort the situation! We've had a little misconduct here in Kayunga! The short version is that Roy and Doreen read Kate's diary which says that she dosen't like them very much! (Fair doos to Kate. She doesn't get on with them as well as I do and after many weeks of trying to talk through our problems and not getting anywhere she gave up and decided she would only let off steam in her journal). So anyay after reading her ... read more

Hi, I woke up in Africa today and it took me a few minutes before I remembered that I am twenty years old. Thats like grandpa status....I guess its a good thing. Well...happy birthday to me. This is my last week in Uganda. I don't even know what that means. I am so excited for everything ahead of me. Thats why it doesn't feel sad. Looking back to my original entries, I knew that Uganda was going to become a huge part of who I am. It certainly has. Its been an incredible couple of months here. How do you find words to conclude this experience? How do I explain how empowering it feels to know that I did this on my own? How do I say goodbye to my Ugandan friends, My leapyear group? ... read more

Well I have just been liberated. Ugandan Sugar cane spirit - Liberty with the slogan “Experience freedom”!! And I think I just have! The last two days have been a little challenging with homesickness setting in. There has been no power in the village for about 8 nights in a row now. With 4 hours to kill between finishing work in the clinic and when dinner is called, there isn’t a whole lot to do besides read, think, write and think too much more! So I thought I shall fill you in on what has been happening in Uganda for the past two weeks - without Luke! I do appologise however for no photo action this time as Luke has the digital. You just have to use your imagination! JOEL Joel has put on 1kg since ... read more

I'm in Armonk packing and trying to get everything together....I leave in an hour and a half for my 20 hour trip! Sorry to the people I haven't have a chance to connect with before I go...it has been really busy but let's catch up by e-mail! It's kind of funny, the taxi driver who will meet me at tthe airport's name is Gerald (my dad's name) and the woman meeting me at my apartment's name is Natasha! I'll try to write on Monday and let you know what the apartment is like. I took a cute picture of my nephew I'll post here (make sure I know how to post pictures :) )... read more

White water rafting was awesome - one of the best things i've done since i arrived. We were rafting down class 4 and 5 rapids, the highest being 6. Between the rapids we floated downstream on the current, so we occasionally got into the water and swam next to the boat, which was so surreal - i couldn't believe that we were actually swimming down the river that we always learnt about in school. The river is beautiful and everything was so lush and green, and occasionally we would see some people from nearby villages washing their clothes in the river. The scenery was just so stunning that we never got tired of it. Our lunch was on an island and it was the best lunch we had had for a while- sandwiches!!! They must ... read more

white water rafting, bungee jumping, a deserted island with a mad old hermit - only in Uganda! The next day after leaving the orphanage we hopped on a bus and headed to Jinja, Uganda. That bus trip has got to be the worst bus trip of my life. We headed to downtown Nairobi late at night, since the bus was due to leave at 11:30pm. But, since this is Africa of course, it didn't leave untill 1:30am. We collapsed onto the bus, ready for a long 12 hour ride and a good sleep - no such luck! We didn't realise that our back seats were possibly the worse seats to choose - you feel every pothole and bump in the road, and there were ALOT of potholes. the road was so bad that everytime i ... read more

kinship is fabulous! the kids are just delightful. there are 24 in all (23 now that one is in seminary boarding school for a few months) nearly all of them have no family at all. some have been streetkids in uganda and others were adopted because they had simply no place to go. the majority of them lost their parents to AIDS, although its not something we talk about all the time. they call us "sissta ellin" and "sissta andlaa" about a million times a day (which isnt saying too much because days begin at 5am!) the program here is really unstructured, which is odd to get used to considering camp was my main experience before this. the kids wakeup at 5am to do their chores before school at 9. we are not required to wakeup ... read more
