The Bad Place This past weekend (July 8-9) I made the uninformed decision to go white water rafting on the Nile. I went with Alex and Ally, both between their first and second year at SIPA and interning here this summer as well. I rafted before in North Carolina and West Virginia. My tenth grade class trip took us to WV for a few days, we watched Deliverance, rafted got into some trouble and a few of us even got suspended- but that’s another story. A few years later my parents took my brother and I rafting for a weekend in NC. Looking back on both trips, I remember being tossed from the raft a few times but nothing traumatic. I cannot say quite the same for my most recent and likely final rafting experience. The ... read more

We arrived in Jinja, Uganda at around 5pm. The bus to Kampala simply dropped us off on the side of the road to fend for ourselves, no bus stop or anything. However, as usual there is transportation everywhere you look and before you know it, a matatu swings by and we negotiate a price in a currency we have no clue about or even have in our pockets. We usually go to an ATM to get the local currency, in this case Uganda Shillings, about 1850 shilling to the dollar. You get really good at adding huge numbers. The highest bill only goes to 50,000 shillings, about 27 dollars. You pray to god you don’t get too many of these bills from the ATM because no one will have change for you, especially at the little ... read more

Right well lets pick up where we left off....the bus ride to Jinja. After 3 plus hours we were dropped off outside Jinja to be mobbed by Boda bodas, now this is the african word for moped boys who for a price will run you from a to b. They formed a circle around us and our luggage and all at once asked where we wanted to go. Joan (the hospital director at Rushere) had recomended a place called Kingfisher, so we asked how much to get there. They seemed to agree 3000 shillings was a fair price, thats about 1 quid, so me and dom pulled a face like were sucking a lemon (that much!) and eventually got it down to 2000 shillings (66p) (bet you're proud of me mum!). Riding on a boda boda ... read more

My (Gerry's) last week in Uganda was a bit frantic as the lawyer informed me that 'Jinja Food Company' had been incorporated as a limited company and the documents could be picked up the next day, which gave me one day (Friday) to open a business account at the bank. I'd found another very good candidate for being a manager of the company and I introduced him to the manager I've already employed, and I'm hoping they will work well together! I've been given 7 acres of land to lease for 10 years, which we will plant with pineapples. Three men have been employed to dig the land and prepare it for planting. Unfortunately pineapples take 2 years to grow before you can harvest them, so it's a long term investment. Also I'm trying to buy ... read more

Livingstone, my (Gerry's) boyhood Scottish hero, would have been ashamed of me. There I was sitting in the Source (of the Nile) Cafe tucking into a long-awaited and much-appreciated meal of sausage, eggs and chips, while this poor man endured 22 bouts of malaria as he spent his whole life in search of the elusive source of the Nile and never did find the place. No such problems today as this place is now a muzungu (white person) magnet. (We won't mention the fact that recent explorers think the source of the Nile is actually in Rwanda, as my friend Jean from Rwanda always maintained!) He would, however, have been happier with me regarding my setting up a business as he was an avid follower of the 3 'C's creed - Christianity, Commerce and Civilisation. He ... read more

After chickening out on Saturday, I got the courage to take my sprained ankle with me for a half day of white water rafting. So this morning I was picked up at the Blue Mango, said goodbye to my new friend from the US and headed to the Source of the Nile with 7 strangers who I would later get to know very well. It's funny how a little fear or struggling can make a bond form quicker than time can sometimes. So one the way to Jinga, where the rafting begins, we stopped at a lovely bakery and had some really delicious crossaints. Not sure if they were so good because I wasn't sure if I'd make it back from rafting in one peice or because I hadn't had one in several months. I sound ... read more

Jinja lays claim to the source of the Nile, the mightiest river in the world as they say. The town lies on the shores of Lake Victoria, and it's out of this lake that pours the water to create one of the most spectacular white water rafting destinations in the world. Seeing as it was very unlikely that we would ever get the chance to come back here again, we decided to take the plunge and see just what the rafting actually entailed. So it was with a great deal of ignorance and excitement that we found ourselves hopping on board a red inflatable dingy. I teamed up with Kim and 4 other girls, plus a female instructor, which on first reflection put a smile on my face. It didnt last long as an hour in ... read more

The moment we landed in Entebbe, the main airport in Uganda, we realized that we were in a tropical country. The landscape is so verdant, with plenty of banana and sugar plantations everywhere. The first morning, we took a matuta ride - a local shared minivan, into the city centre. We realized our ATM cards don't work here and our US 100 bills are not accepted ! Apparently, only $100 bills dated 2000 and above are accepted - to reduce conterfeit money. Bottom line: We had to scamper to get money using cash advances on our credit card... After a long day, we had some excellent Indian food at Haandi. As many of you know, there is a sizeable Indian community that has come back after Idi Amin had kicked them out in the 1970s. I (Gerry) read an inspiring story in the 'New Vision' (my favourite newspaper) about a Ugandan guy who has set up the 'Rwenzori Finest Coffee Company' in the mystical Mountains of the Moon which borders Rwanda. The small coffee farmers (they're not pygmies - they just own small amounts of land each!) used to sell their coffee beans for a pittance partly because the quality wasn't great and they had no choice of buyer. So this guy comes along and helps them form cooperatives and trains them to produce top quality beans which he buys from them for a fair sum of money. Now the farmers can afford to send their children to school and improve their living environment. The company has now secured a contract to supply Waitrose supermarkets in the UK! The new-found optimism ... read more

Greetings from Uganda! For those who don't know, I (Gerry) am here for 6 months working with our great old friends, Sam and Eva who run an organisation called 'Uganda Family Resource Link'. They have done wonders here (the project in the village is called 'Bushfire'), within 2 or 3 years they have built 4 homes for 60 children-at-risk (mainly orphans), staff houses, a huge community-cum-church hall, a farm, a medical clinic and they are half way through building a primary school! It has grown so quick Sam feels somewhat overwhelmed and was keen for me to come and help organise things and give some management advice. I like the idea of being a management consultant and charging thousands of pounds per week for my services! But then that would be slightly unethical given that lunch ... read more
