Today we had a decent lecture at the hotel, however it is difficult to really focus on a lecture knowing there is a whole county to see outside. We went to a soccer game where there were less spectators than I expected. We had nice seats, but, as we're 20 American tourists siting in one row, surrounded by police, I felt like I was on display. The men smoked way too much and it was difficult to sit there through the first half. During halftime we were ushered into a wood paneled room where men in suits milled around and we stood there and felt awkward. Still not really sure what we were doing there, but I suppose it was some sort of reception. It was disappointing that Tunisia lost the game to Zambia, but it ... read more

This is a story about my trip to Tunisia. After having said goodbye to Hel and Scott in Agrigento i made my way up the coast (via Selinute) to Trapani to catch my Ferry to Tunisia on the 4th. I meet up with 2 Aussie blokes on the boat (Henry & Andrew) and they were kind enough to lend me there guide book to Tunisia so i could suss out a plan of action when i got to Tunis. I was getting quite excited about all the things i was going to be able to see over the next week- Carthage, Kairoun, Sousse, The Sahara dessert. We agreed that due to our late arrival in Tunis we'd all grab a cab into town. On arrival we waited like patient little sheep at customs, only to be ... read more

Last day in Tunis today before heading off down to El Jem, Gabes and then to Djerba! Taking our time to just wander around and shop in the Medina and take in the sights, sounds and smells of Tunis. Have really enjoyed the people and this place is such a mix of European and Arabic cultures and we are having fun making the Tunisians in the Medina guess our Nationality, mostly think we are Spanish, much to Iain's amusement, so we must go and shop!... read more

Woke up to a yummy breakfast, pastries, breads, coffee etc. Went off to get our driver sorted for the rest of our travels around Tunisia after an eventful morning of trying to get money out of the teller machines. Then off to Carthage to see the ancient crumblies! Straight to the Antonine Baths on the Mediterranean Sea and then up to Byrsa Hill to see the Cathage Museum and Ancient Forum ruins. We then caught a taxi to Sidi Bou Said, which is a small village on the top of a hill overlooking the Sea. It is famous for its Whitewashed buildings and blue doors and fretwork on the windows. It was just as stunning as the pictures we had seen before arriving, we have taken so many photos of doors etc that we could publish ... read more

Today we arrived in Tunis early morning, after a long flight from Doha, Qatar. Our first funny experience was getting our Tourist Visa in Tunis Airport. As you can't get Tunisian Dinar anywhere but Tunisia, and we had to pay for the Visa with Dinar, Iain had to wangle his way through customs and imigration without his passport, in order to get to an ATM to get Tunisian Dinar to pay for the Visa. Then we had to wait for 1 hour to get the Visa, not that anyone tells you this at the time, but it was quite funny. Once we got our Visa, we headed outside the airport for a taxi. And the adventures of travelling began, with a driver offering us a taxi while we were walking outside to look for the taxi's ... read more

When I had first planned to come to Tunisia I thought that it would be a short ferry ride from Italy and a refreshing break from Europe. It was a very refreshing break from Europe but the ferry ride proved much more difficult to organise than I had previously thought. We wanted to take a ferry from Salerno but soon found out that the only ferry was full. It went via Palermo in Sicily though and there were free seats from there to Tunis. We tried to buy tickets but it was "impossible" we were told. We quickly went to the train station and took a train to Palermo. As we had a few hours headstart on the ferry so we arrived early and ended up sleeping in the train station. The next morning we went ... read more

*Sidi Bou Said is a very attractive little coastal town, this is somewhat aided by what seems to be a strictly-enforced colour scheme: everything was blue and white. The steep path down to the harbour is just behind me in this picture. *This rather attractive tiling can be found at the Bardo Museum on the outskirts of Tunis, along with a large collection of mosaics that have been ripped out of Carthage. Charlie was ill that day from some dodgy food, so she says please don't look at the photo too hard. *Carthage itself was rather dilapidated, since most of its stones had been recycled by the Romans, and in turn the Roman buildings were taken into pieces and used to build more modern cities. These are the remains of the Antonine Baths. ... read more

On Getting Arrested. OK so I got arrested. Not really. Just a ride to the police station. I was in Matmata where the some parts of the Star Wars movies were filmed - and the tourist police came by. As I was the only ewok in town, I got lucky. Yes, the police wanted to see my passport and ask all sorts of personal questions. As Hardy was busy asking me out for coffee every five minutes, Laurel was examining my clean passport. The Hardy character really did remind me of his name sake - besides being rather roley-poly, he was sporting the requisite police mustache. As I was tuning down offers for coffee Laurel noticed that I had, in his words, dropped from heaven. He meant of course that there is a period in my ... read more

OK so I really like Tunisia. I cant help it. The people are awesome, the weather is outstanding (I went swimming yesterday Jodi!) and the food is fantastic! I have been in Tunisia for exactly one week today. I flew from Amman where I nearly missed my flight. Note to self: one hour is NOT enough time to clear security and passport control and check-in. On the up side however, I did not have to hang around the airport looking for something to do. I also got a security escort (3 guys) all the way to the plane! I was slightly nervous at passport control - I was using my clean passport with no exit stamps from Jordan and I was afraid he would ask to see my other passport. He took half a look and ... read more

Tunisia was one of the parts of our trip that was an afterthought which became an obsession! we wanted to go to somewhere in North Africa and started by thinking about Morocco but were advised that it probably was not the safest spot! obviously Algeria and Libya were out so Tunisia it was... so armed with this thought we went to the travel agent and asked for it to be included in our round the world ticket... here is where the problem begins... funnily enough one world does not fly Tunisia to Egypt! but by now it had become an obsession for us to go and so we paid the extra sector flights and hopped on the plane!! so given that we have paid a lot of money to go to Tunisia we were absolutely determined ... read more
