Sorry for the delay since our last post - we have had a difficult time finding internet for the past few days. On September 9, we descended into Ngorongoro Crater for our last day of wildlife viewing in Tanzania. We saw some very large herds of resident wildebeest and zebra, as well as hippos, elephants, lions, gazelle, hyenas, etc. - basically everything but giraffes. We also managed to see a black rhino! Apparently they had had a difficult time spotting rhinos for several days because of the cold weather, but the rhinos were back out grazing in the warmer weather. It was funny seeing the rhinos because our tour guide said that rhinos in Tanzania are protected more than our president! Apparently there are about 18 black rhinos left in the crater, and the rangers get ... read more

Hey everyone! Right now I'm sitting in an internet cafe on Vuga street, just about a block from where I've been staying at the Mauwani hotel, and it's 450 shillings every half hour (about 45 cents, FYI), but I'm going to try to make this a fast and informative entry, and to put up a few pictures as well. So, as of yesterday, I have been in Zanzibar for exactly one week. Wow. By this past Tuesday I was already feeling like I'd been here for ages. It might have had something to do with the 5 long flights and 3 long days it took me to get here, but I think it also has to do with trying to learn the language and speaking to the locals for practice whenever possible. There are 15 of ... read more

After resting for a few days after Kili, Robyn, Nathan and I decided to chill on the beach in Zanzibar for a few days. I got here three nights ago and the first thing I saw was these two kids running across the road, jumping off the road into the water below. It was quite funny. Zanzibar is a very neat place, as it has cultural influences from all over the world, Persians, Arabs, Comorians, and the Manland Tanzanians. The people are beautiful because over the generations they have become a blend of all of the people that have settled here. Yesterday I took a boat trip to Prison Island just off the coast of Zanzibar. They have a reserve of these giant tortoises, and they are giant! I could ride one if I wanted to ... read more

1st week of my long journey and it feels like ages since I departed for Africa. A long hop from Sydney to Jo'burg, SA, a step north to Dar Es Salem, Tanzania and jump east on ferry to Zanzibar. Firstly it was great to see Ralph after a few months apart and yes he was clean, well fed and handsome as ever (add a few more whiskers than I had ever known). Ralph and I spent three days in historic Isalmic Stone Town famous for its miriad of narrow stone foot paths, amongst historic centuries old Indian/Turkish style buildings. We spent a few days walking through the town, it's market places and its museums, asmpling street merchant food. We enjoyed Tanzanian pizza (vegetable omelette or banana choc crepe), Indian curry and samosa, BBQ prawns, BBQ beef ... read more

I'm here in Stone Town in Zanzibar. It's been a long drive to get here, so let's review what's happened from the last entry in Zambia. Later in the evening, we went on another game drive in South Luangwa National Park in Zambia and by far, the best animal we saw was the shy and elusive leopard, up close. It was dark, and we had someone shining a spot light around looking for animals. We spotted the spotted leopard, and so did everyone else. We drove right up close to the leopard as it sat almost ignoring the half dozen safari jeeps surrounding it with their spot lights. I got some great photos. We followed the leopard as it stalked the impalas nearby. Our driver was outstanding, he knew where the leopard would go next, not ... read more

Kellie arrived safe and sound on the 9 of July but not without problems with immigration. One many things that I will never understand is why they insist that you put a local address on the immigration form. If you are a tourist then most likely you will stay there for one night and then move on. Kellie didn’t know which place we would stay in Dar and was too honest to put in a fake name. Luckily the immigration officer was very friendly and let her use his mobile phone. Welcome to Africa. We took the Zanzibar ferry the next morning which brought us to Zanzibar (duh). Strangely Zanzibar is part of Tanzania but then it’s also its own state and once arrived we had to go through immigration (yay another stamp) and customs again. ... read more

Zanzibar The Spice Island After a stop over in Dar es Salaam, the main port and centre of commerce for Tanzania, we take a boat to Zanzibar. The crossing is relatively smooth and it takes just a few hours to reach Zanzibar and Stone Town. Historically the town was a centre for trade in both spices and slaves to Arabia as well as being a base for many of the 19th century explorers of Africa including Speke, Burton and Livingstone. The town is made up of old colonial buildings and alleyways hiding various shops and markets. When we arrived there was a power cut due to a break in the power cable to the mainland, it had been like this for three months and apparently due to a conflict between the two, Tanzania was in no ... read more

Linan and I got our open water certification in Malawi in 2 1/2 days. It usually takes 4. It was great to get it out of the way because it was a lot cheaper than doing it in the ocean but we spent all of our time at Kande Beach getting through everything. After leaving, we spent one night in Chipata (spelling?) before heading into Tanzania. Overall, I was pretty disappointed with Malawi. It didn't really live up to its reputation of being the "warm heart of Africa." I guess it's all circumstantial but, for me, the Tanzanians have been much more welcoming. Tanzania had a hefty and unexpected $100 visa fee (the US state department's website says it's $50). We had two consecutive days of over 10 hours of driving. In between, we stayed at ... read more

And then there were eight. As the last entry left off, three members of our group departed in Arusha. So only eight of us took the 10 hour bus journey home to Dar es Salaam. We took the nice bus, Royal Coach, and were treated to three magnificent movies (please note the sarcasm): Mr. Bean, Mr. Bones, and Universal Soldier III. No, we did not see I or II, but the third part of a trilogy is always a good movie to watch on a long bus ride. Mr. Bean was by far the best movie in the group. Mr. Bones began as mildly offensive and soon turned to outright offensive by the end. It played right into every stereotype that people have of African tribes. The bus, because of the length of the ride, makes ... read more

Stone Town, Zanzibar - Shadiest place in all of my trip If you are going to Zanzibar Island, there is no avoiding Stone Town since the airport and the ferry terminal into the island is situated there. But do yourself a favor and get out of StoneTown as soon as you get there. How can I put this: Stone Town has this way of bringing out the worst in people. The place is very shady and don't even think of doing any of your gift shopping for back home in Stone Town - its waay too expensive. The store owners start off at an exorbitant price so even when it looks like they are taking "50% off" ...they are only taking half off on a product whose price was exorbitant to start with. i.e., I bought ... read more
