As it was the first time in Stonetown for all of us and the festival doesn’t kick off until the late afternoon, we took the opportunity to expore the city, starting off with the market. Once we found it (got lost so many times until finally a nice Zanzibari woman guided us out of the little side streets), we were quite disappointed. The smell from fish and meat was revolting. I also had pictured spice stalls like on Middle Eastern markets. Zanzibar is called the ‘Spice Island’ and it produces large amounts of clove, lemongrass and so on. But that was for sale were little plastic bags and little souvenir boats filled with five different spices. Then a proper tropical thunderstorm started and transformed the town centre into a second Venice - the little alleys become ... read more

It started to get a little embarrassing, I’ve been in Tanzania for 4½ months and I hadn’t been to Zanzibar yet - at least it felt like it, as whenever it came up in conversation, I had to say no. It is not like that it is difficult or expensive (at least as a Tanzanian resident) to get there and I hadn’t just been anywhere in Tanzania, but on the gateway to the island. Dar is connected with several ferries and flights a day, but somehow there just hadn’t been time yet. Now there was no excuse, as the ‘Sauti za Busara’ festival (in English ‘Sounds of Wisdom’) was on in Stonetown, the capital of Zanzibar. It’s a big five-day open-air music festival in the Old Fort in the heart of the historic town centre attracting ... read more

Had another incredible day yesterday that began at 7:00 with an impressive breakfast of mango, homemade bread, a fried biscuit of fish and potato, a tomato, and ndizi (bananas). Then off to Swahili class. The quick five minute walk from my house to our classroom is really nice and takes me through a beautiful part of Stone Town. I thought that I'd never learn how to navigate the notoriously random and haphazard street pattern but even after a couple days, I'm recognizing where I am fairly well. After two hours of Swahili, we grabbed our gear and walked to the beach where we took an hour trip in a boat to Prison Island. Famous for its former prison, coral, and tortoises, we got to experience all of them. If I was to go to jail, I ... read more

Well, how do I put my life into words.... wow. Maybe first, a quick Swahili lesson. Hujambo! Vipi! Tutonana baadage. Salama! Hello! What's up. My name is Yussuf.* I am from America, in the state of Maryland, in the city of Silver Spring. I talk Swahili slowly but yesterday I learned a little bit and today I learned a little bit and tomorrow I will learn a little bit more too! Soon, I will know Swahili well. I hope that when I return ... read more

Contrary to what many of you may believe, I'm alive. It's been some of the most exhilerating, tiring, stressful, terrible, and wonderful three days of my life. Yesterday we had a "drop off" where we were dropped off in the middle of Stone Town, Zanzibar and given a list of things we needed to locate. So after only one Swahili class, we were forced into the most culturally uncomfortable situation that we've ever entered. Yet I can't even begin to tell you how incredible it was. After only minutes, you begin to understand something that was previous entirely foreign. From talking with peddlers pestering you with products, to stangers on the street giving you directions, to the stares of the impoverished, I've started. There's still a long way to go, especially on learning to communicate in ... read more

Ok I'm flying out tonight. Woah, now its real. I bought this week's Newsweek for my homestay family. Unsurprisingly, it has Prezy Obama's face on it. I figured he's popular over there and bringing a magazine with a couple pictures of him is the least I can do to represent America. I also purchased a colorful throw rug for them and art supplies for the kids, just some small gifts I can bring over there with me to give out. I'm 8 hours ahead of yall on the east coast, so if I ever get on skype, it'll probably be the morning/early afternoon for you. I have orientation for a week then go right to my first homestay in Stone Town at the beginning of feburary so I'll have a ton of stuff going on right ... read more

Everything is set for me to leave for Tanzania and Zanzibar, I'll see yall again in May. Mostly, I'm hoping for this to be the place for me to share my travel pictures, silly stories, oddities, and info. Long stories and rants... eh, not so much. Just bookmark it, check back here periodically and maybe you'll get a new post if your lucky. Don't yet know how much communication I'll have with yall and I'm not hopeful. Obviously don't call me, my phone's off until may. Email or fb is good but I might not be able to respond to it for days/weeks/months!?! Especially if everybody is emailing me, how do I respond to them all? Don't take it offensively if I don't holla back at you asap. I'll try though. I'm sure that mailing stuff ... read more

ZANZIBAR.... it's ok, say it again- this time with a little more flare.... at the same time the name rolls off your tongue a certain mystique and wonder is aroused in the imagination. There has always been something alluring about Zanzibar- but no one can articulate it, you just have to be there to absorb the wonders it holds. It is easy to get lost in the narrow streets of Stone Town - Not only because it is like a maze with no order, but also behind every corner and bend is another hidden treasure. A beautiful 18th century door amongst crumbling buildings, shops full of spices and art, Muslim women in traditional scarves huddling together to gossip and laugh, children playing with kites and rolling tires... it is one place I don't mind getting 'lost' ... read more

Hey All, Sorry this might be a very quick update as usual I don’t have a long time on this computer. I can’t believe it was a whole week ago I wrote my last blog. I can’t remember if I told you about Christmas?? Well anyway it was great, Santa came to both Alice and I with presents deposited under our makeshift chrismtas tree made of branches, leaves and shells. The next couple of days were much like the rest, chilling out during the days, meeting up with fiend during the evenings. We had two Irish girlfriends from the Hostel staying in Zanzibar at the same time as us which has been great as they are such a laugh and really good company. Even though we had them here it hasn’t stopped us from meeting a ... read more

Lamminta vuotta 2009! Olemme viettaneet uutta vuotta Sansibarilla, Saharan etelanpuolisen Afrikan turistikeskuksessa Stone Townissa. Toiss... read more
