I was so excited about Zanzibar a) to have a bit of a break from sitting on the truck and b) to get a bit of beach action! To get to Zanzibar off mainland Tanzania we had to get a ferry. Prior to getting on the ferry though we got herded on to a barge which you stand on. It was a funny experience standing in between the cars (which are also being transported on this thing) and alongside women that have kilos of stuff (for lack of a better word - could be in a bucket, basket or boot) on their heads. After getting on the ferry I was advised to go straight to sleep because it's a super bumpy ride but fortunately I got to watch a little of "The Ghost Ship" (film ... read more

Hello from TZ! Kate and I arrived in Zanzibar on Sunday and we are both in LOVE with this place!!!! We're staying at the Amaan Bungalows which is a beautiful resort on the North end of the island (don't worry, we're staying within our budget!!!). Our room is gorgeous! We each have our own bed complete with bug nets, shower, flushing toilet *we got laughed at for asking about that one at the front desk!* and a fan. Too bad the entire island has been without power for over 2 weeks now. We are currently running on generators which they only turn on in the evenings. Everynight we lay in bed praying for the generators to turn on so we can use the ceiling fan in our room- it is freakin hot here!! The beach is ... read more

Have you ever gone and done something that you never thought you would find yourself doing in a million years? This last week was that week for me…..Especially since it was just last year that I finally got in the ocean without being in a constant state of panic as I imagine sharks being all around in every direction I turn, as we began taking the kids to go snorkeling on our trips to Tanga. Psalm 104:25 There is the sea, vast and spacious, teeming with creatures beyond number— living things both large and small. Well, Brent & I decided to get away together for a week, to relax and prepare ourselves for the upcoming busy season of the campaigns. It was also the anniversary of the day that we first met, back 13 years ... read more

From the great savanna till spice iceland We got all we expected from this trip and more. During our three week vacation we came close to impressive animals (real close), met wonderful people, saw the biggest slum in Africa, fed turtles, lerned how spices look in nature, were awoken by lion roaring, learned about the masai culture, and much more. ... read more

Before making the ferry crossing to Zanzibar, we had one important bit of business to attend to. On the Friday morning we got up bright and early and made our way to the Canadian High Commission so that we could complete our passport saga by picking up our brand new 48-page passports! What a relief! Our first night in Zanzibar, we stayed in Stone Town and went for a tour of the city the next day including the usual spice tour. We then drove to the north end of the Island and spent the next 3 nights at Nungwi chilling on the beach. The fish was excellent, and the water was brilliant (except for the pesky sea lice that nibbled away at us while we swam). Overall, it was really relaxing - just what we needed! ... read more

Game Over As I wrote about before, it first hit me way back in September. That little enemy of long-term travel...weariness. But back then I thought - correctly - I had the cure...change things up - location, climate, scenery, activities, etc. So I decided to press on. I got to Nepal and all was well again. Having spent 3 months in Nepal in relative stability - meaning a long period of limited new inputs, not un/packing my bag every day, not meeting new folks all the time, and generally settling down a bit - I expected to be fully charged and ready to hit the trail again. I was. But on day 2 of my high-energy assault on the sites of Delhi, the weariness-enemy hit me with an unexpected sucker-punch...only 36hrs removed from Nepal and I ... read more

With the fresh sea breeze keeping us cool, we slept well on our last night in the tent. However, no matter how good our sleep, it was to be short lived. In order to catch our first of two ferries that would hopefully see us safely to Zanzibar, we had to be up at 4am in the morning. It was during Sam’s first visit to the bathroom that she discovered that somewhat earlier than hoped (inevitable during a year away) she’d succumbed to an upset stomach. The first ferry was just a 10 minute affair for which we didn’t even have to leave the confines of the truck. Whilst waiting for the ferry we were treated to the stomach turning aroma of the massive fish market here in Dar Es Salaam. If Sam needed a second ... read more

We spent the day driving out of Malawi and into Tanzania, stopping in a small town on the way. Some of the scenery on our drive was absolutely breathtaking, looking out over Lake Malawi. We were to have a themed evening whereby we would buy fancy-dress for someone else in the group - names were picked out of a hat. We visited a clothes market where we had 30 minutes to buy our clothes. That evening, an enormous fruit punch was made in a cooler box and our outfits were presented. I contemplated putting a picture of my outfit up here, but what can I say - there just wasn't room! (it was a white dress with blue frills...!) We spent the following day driving to Dar Es Salaam. We took a ferry across from Dar ... read more

Since our last entry we haven't really had a chance to get on the net. Currently we are on Zanzibar for 4 nights and finally in one place longer than a night or two so I have some time! After the gorillas we headed back to Nairobi which was 3 days of full on driving in the truck (we're talking generally 10 hours a day) It was a little exhausting as we'd get up at 6am (sometimes earlier) and be on the road for most of the day, with just a lunch break in the middle. We spent 3 nights at a camping ground (It had a bar and a "disco" so it wasn't basic but we were still tenting it.) We had optional activities like Hells Gate National Park, which we skipped for a sleep-in ... read more

We spent the night at Dar Es Salaam on our last day with the truck, on a campsite at the beach. The weather was very hot and humid and so I upgraded to a banda (beach hut) because I couldn't be bothered to put up my tent! There were two other trucks from the same company there with us (and they stuck with us in Zanzibar as well) so we had a big party on the beach with all of them. The next day we got a ferry from our campsite across to the main ferry port, and then a ferry over to Zanzibar Island - it was a very rough and choppy crossing, and a few people were seasick. When we arrived we travelled straight to our accomodation at Kendra beach near Nungwi, where we ... read more
