The next morning we left the Serengeti for Lupita Island on Lake Tanganyika in western Tanzania. It would be a three-hour flight from Seronera to the airstrip at Kipili. We really hated to leave the Serengeti, especially since we never found a black rhino, or even a white one, but we looked forward to relaxing in luxury at Lupita. We flew for over an hour, then stopped to refuel in Tabora.Once we landed at Kipili, we had a ten-minute walk to the shore, then a ten-minute boat ride across to the island. Remote, private and exclusive, the resort at Lupita Island was truly amazing. All open-air African style with a bar, dining room, pool area, campfire, spa, gym, game room and decks for taking in the beautiful lake views. Each area was decorated with local African ... read more

My 30 hours aboard the Liemba passed all too quickly, and by 9pm on the second day we pulled into the bay of Kipili, left the ferry through a door in the hull to a waiting rocking canoe, and slowly rowed to shore as the ship stood illuminated in the pitch black night. I spent the next few days in the village of Kipili, time spent eating at Mama's cafe (a mud and straw hut 3m x 3m that was the only place in the village for food) drinking in the only bar (a collection of plastic garden chairs on the edge of a dusty street), and watching village life go by. Although, to be honest, there wasn’t exactly much to watch – the odd game of boa or draughts, one lone banana seller (Sundays only), ... read more

Just as Africa was getting predictable. Just as Africa was become easy. Just as Africa was getting, dare I say it, dull. I found myself in Western Tanzania, and everything seemed to change. Rwanda was tarmaced, efficient, and regulated. Cafe's with air-con and leather seats charged European prices for cups of coffee, while the clientele read the latest daily. Journeys, though beautiful, passed without incident, and towns visited almost passed without interest. It was nice for a few days, but that's not really why I came to Africa. Burundi was better, more manic, more frantic, somehow more 'alive', but still somewhat predictable. And then I found myself in Western Tanzania and it all seemed to change. Western Tanzania, an endless land, where train journeys last for 24 hours, and boat trips even longer. Where six hour ... read more

I first met Hideki Ota, the Japanese man from the title, on the bus from Bujumbura to Kigoma - Burundi to Tanzania - a few days ago. After brief introductions, and explaining that he was travelling around the world for two years, he remained fairly quite, chipping in with conversations here and there, but just as happy to sit and let us talk the night away. That all changed last night, when he exploded out his shell, and spent the majority of a very interesting evening talking. It turns out, that he’s not just travelling around the world, content to avoid work for a few months like the rest of us, but at has three personal projects on the go as well. The first is to encourage Japanese professionals to follow suit, and to start working ... read more

Mpulungu is a single road town but this time a surfaced road which leads to the harbour at one end. We are the only mzungu's (white people) in town so stand out. We find a 'hotel' near the harbour which has cottages in the grounds. They are basic but the same price as a dorm bed in Lusaka so quite reasonable. There is no running water so the bucket system is in use for the shower and toilet, but there is a large fan and mosquito net, and surprisingly a TV. This has a satellite connection but is run from the main house so we can only watch whichever channel they decide to watch, and that often cuts out. We visit the harbour to inquire about the MV Liemba Ferry which runs on Fridays but they ... read more

Our last day in Kayanga - lots of closures. Highlights of the day are: 1) we are now the official KARUCO Ambassadors following the ELCT Management Team meeting; 2) Saying goodbye to many friends; 3) being taken to an economic development team. NARRATIVE: The morning was active with a marriage seminar at the hotel and conference center. Steve and I were told that we would have a Management Team meeting for the ELCT during the morning and it started at 10:30. Bishop, General Secretary, Brighton, Pastor Emmanuel, Pastor Oscar, George the Treasurer, and Sam joined Steve and me at the meeting. After the proper hellos and prayer, we debriefed about all we had seen and the persons we met. Needs were synthesized and corroborated by the team. We were asked if we would be interested in ... read more

For the first time in my life I was in a place, the interior of Karagwe - Kyerwa - where there was absolutely no source of light. Pitch black. Utter darkness. Could not see my hand in front of my face. More about that later. For now, the highlights of the day include: 1) Sat on the "back porch" enjoying the morning while Edina managed her hotel staff; 2) Rode with Dustin to Mabira in the interior of Karagwe; 3) A highlight of my life was the women of Mbira greeting us with their singing and dancing; 4) Stayed at the ELCT Compound at Kyerwa with Elsie, Pastor Godfrey, and Frederick; and 5) to bed in utter darkness. NARRATIVE: Every morning we awaken mutliple times with the sounds of wild dogs barking, hotel workers shouting to ... read more

Everywhere we go, we are mindful to ask: What are the strengths here? Weaknesses? Ideas for the future? I have not blogged about it much, but our purpose in Karagwe to assess needs and determine if there is a way we could collaborate on meeting the needs of the people of Karagwe. We have a separate report (way beyond blogging) that focuses on the Karagwe Needs Assessment. Email educatetanzania@gmail.comif interested in that. Today's highlights include: 1) Being the object of local attention in the crowded bank lobby; 2) Assessing needs through on-site visit and interviews with AIDS Control Program (ACP) led by Venant; 3) Lunching with Pastor Joaquin; 4) Ambling through the 'burbs' of Kayanga; 5) Enjoying a pop and water at a bar patio. NARRATIVE: I love our coffees and breakfasts in Kayanga. Toast, omelettes, ... read more

We looked forward to a free day. Highlights included: 1) Kayanga errands; 2) Said "good-bye" to Carsten at the hotel; 3) Ordered tailored clothes from the dressmaker; 4) Lunch with the Chobya family; 5) Eunice Chobya made me a suit. NARRATIVE: It has been so handy having Carsten around to answer questions - where is the best coffee in Kayanga? How do you arrange your schedule for work here? How did you meet your wife in Kayanga? But Carsten had to leave after he and Steve walked to the bank. Carsten came to work with Venant and the AIDS project with the ELCT. he was lookimg forward to meeting his wife and taking a holiday on the beach side of Tanzania. We said good-bye.
