Winding Down. This was our first morning without Daniel and Ashley. Eluid is our steady server who drops everything to meet our needs. His smile is contagious and his calm demeanor a joy. Our typical 'spanish eggs' or hard-boiled eggs and toast keeps us every day until mid-morning tea. Jay and Pedro spent the morning fleshing out the 3-year curriculum program for KARUCO. I sneaked in at one point and listened in. Fabulous to hear the debate, the reasoning, the ideas about what courses to offer and when. What is the focus? Who can teach such a thing? How will this meet the real needs of the students? All good stuff. Brighton came a tad later. He and I discussed what seemed like 'everything' for quite a while. He is a deep and kind man. His ideas ... read more

January 31st The team is starting to head out. We all saw Ashley off shortly after breakfast. She was a welcome addition to the ETI team and we will miss her. Her professional photos of the people of Karagwe, the team, and our surroundings will be available sometime in February and we look forward to finding out what she saw through that lens. Daniel left shortly after his meeting with the General Secretary. I asked Daniel to meet with Dr. Bagonza as well, but he left town earlier in the week and was not available. They agreed to meet 'on the road' in a few hours. Daniel's place on the ETI team dealt more with programming and operational administration issues than with curriculum, however the two are connected- obviously. Daniel helped create and now steer a ... read more

KAYANGA Update: Sorry I have been quiet for a few days. Power has gone out every day. We had no water for several days, and it is unseasonably cold and rainy. Can you believe it? Africa! We were told this is the dry season - so we are teasing our Tanzanian friends that they have told us a fib. As I type I have a half bucket (3 gal) of hot, hot water for me to mix in with the full bucket of cold water for my evening bath. It really is all the water one needs to get clean although at home I am sure I use much more. Our team is extremely good at not complaining about these types of inconveniences. It makes me really happy to be surrounded by people who have hearts ... read more

RAIN, COOL QUOTES, and MALIMU KATABARO Another packed and enriching day. I feel as though I may be running out of good adjectives to describe how these days are passing. Our team is commenting on the cool temps, the rain, and the fact that this is supposed to be the dry season. We have been told that the weather is confused. I flat out use my toe-warmers at night. We visited Brighton's father's farm today. It was a joy to see his father again and see what his home looked like. It is neat and well-kept and Mr. Katabaro was a kind host. Banana everywhere. Coffee too. Pedro and Jay were in their element talking bananas, coffee, soils, and other Ag-related topics. Beautiful and sunny to boot. We stopped at one more farm on the way ... read more

CURRICULUM TASK FORCE MEETING MONDAY! The Educate Tanzania Team is ready for the week. Early breakfast and meeting in the conference room with key leaders from the community. Graduates from Sokoine University (the only Agricultural University in Tanzania), the Director of CHEMA - a program designed to improve rural life by addressing poverty, the Community Development Officer, a retired professor from Sokoine, members of the KARUCO team, and of course, the Educate Tanzania Team. Brighton had asked me to facilitate the meetings which I agreed to do. That facilitation got a tad awkward as our teams tried: to merge the formality of Africa with the casualness of America; to propose new procedures among people accustomed to leading groups in ways they felt comfortable; to flatten the budding organizations among people who are used to heirarchies; and ... read more

Woo! We are in high gear and yet life moves very slowly here. Our program is packed with interactions with the community in Karagwe. We are meeting with many people who have input about KARUCO at the same time that our team is trying to absorb absolutely everything and offer some ideas of their own. So far in Kayange we: SATURDAY: Visited the KARUCO site (Saturday). The team commented how beautiful it was and the potential for KARUCO. Jay immediately got into the soil and started digging in the dirt. He commented regarding the lack of soil fertility and need to amend soils. We are managing expectations as the KARUCO program is formed and merging all the different needs and agendas. We had a conversation with secondary teachers and students at KARASECO school. We broke into ... read more

CHURCH I mentioned church in another blog entry but it deserves its very own. Anytime a service lasts from 10:00 till 2:00 someone should write a blog entry. The Lutheran church just in back of the hotel is home to many of my friends in Kayanga so it feels good to revisit there. The entire Educate Tanzania team went and dutifully sat on the front bench. Rachel Kakulima interpreted for Jan and Ashley and Pastor interpreted for Daniel, Pedro and Jay. The music was outstanding as usual. A little electric keyboard, sychronized voices and slight dance movements. I didn't realize I was moving to the music until Rachel asked me, "You like?". Halfway through, I was reminded of the casual approach toward time as various members of the choir showed up during a song and simply ... read more

We're here! Precision Air ran on time and got us to Bukoba a little after two. Brighton greeted us along with Enoch, and it was good to see them. Brighton's wife Ann is in Denmark because she will deliver her baby there, so Brighton is missing her and their son, Mukiza. Things are going well for him and for KARUCO though. Lunch in Bukoba. Rice and egg for me and grasshoppers and fish for others. I was appreciative of the cultural norm that the grasshoppers are so special that only men get them. Then a familiar red dirt road and about 15 monkeys en route to Kayanga. Good to be back. Greetings, greetings, greetings. Karagwe's Future

Africa » Tanzania » West October 11th 2012

It was an amazing day – the beginning of the future. Groundbreaking was so well organized and so festive. The Honorable Kjell Bergh, Consul to Tanzania, USA and I had breakfast at 8:00, were joined by Rev. Dr. Brighton Juel Katabaro, Coordinator for KARUCO, then were taken to the KARUCO site with Rev. Dr. Benson Bagonza, Bishop and Founder of KARUCO, at 9:00. The Chinese workers are hard at work on the road although it is still under construction and deeply rutted. We entered KARASECO (Karagwe Secondary School) and on to the adjacent KARUCO via a new road--not even built on my last visit to the site in 2010. We headed to the groundbreaking site where the new administration and classroom buildings were already under construction and the laborers hard at work. We arrived at the ... read more
