So, yes, Friday I was so homesick I could hardly stand it. It's the first time it's really hit me since I got here. It didn't help that I spent most of the day alone at the FOGOTA office since Ali was at a workshop and Dorcas was off doing other stuff. One interesting thing though was that it rained -- the first real rain I have seen since I have been here, since this is not the rainy season. It poured down for about five minutes, then cleared up as quickly as it had come. I was really surprised to see it, and I think everybody else was too judging from how people were responding outside the office window. Rainy season starts in December and I think really gets going in the new year. But ... read more

I am sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo hot. The last 24 hours have been the worst since I got here. It's like my body has just suddenly realized this heat thing is not an aberration. I have been pouring sweat. Last night I thought I would die -- and then the power went out for 45 minutes and I had no fan. Unbelievable. The rooms for some reason get very little air even though it's cooler outside and we have huge windows. I finally took some Gravol, knowing they would make me sleepy, and conked out around 3:00. Needless to say, when the alarm went at 6:30, I was not a happy camper. Nor have I been all day. It's been a couple of days like that though. Yesterday the battery on my alarm clock died for the third time, ... read more

...was very enjoyable and very restorative. Saturday I had entirely to myself, at my request. Well, not actually my request but I made it well known to all and sundry that I was REALLY looking forward to a day to sleep in and just hang out. Which is what I did. I read and listened to music and at one point ventured out to the fruit stand across the road to buy some bananas to go with my peanut butter crackers for dinner. The bananas here taste very banana-y, I think they must lose a lot of their taste by the time they get to us in North America. I was a little lonely by evening but then my next door neighbour came home from her day and we chatted. She had invited me to go ... read more

Okay, I seem to be effectively connected to the information super highway, so let's see what happens. Things are going really really well here. I feel very happy and comfortable and I know it's in large part due to how I am being treated. On one hand I can't believe I've been in Africa for a week, in Africa, I'm in Africa!!!!!! That hasn't exactly sunk in yet. But on the other hand it's hard to believe it's been only a week. Ali has returned from Kagera region -- he was my contact all through the year as I was arranging this placement, but then he had to go away because they were conducting training in another part of the country. That's why I was hooked up with Thomas, even before I came here. So it ... read more

For the last couple of nights I have written you witty and fascinating (well, in my view) accounts of what's happening here in Africa, both of which refused to post. I have no idea why, except that the internet here is like our worst days of dial up used to be. So before I write anything too much I am going to post this and see if it goes through. Then I will give you an update. I miss you all but I am doing great! Keep those cards and letters coming! (And/or emails). I was thinking as well that if you have questions you're welcome to email them to me, and I will try to answer here. Kwa heri (farewell) for now! Jackie :)... read more

I am at an internet cafe that is close to the FOGOTA office, waiting for Thomas to pick me up. Ali has left for the weekend to go back to his home country in the south to visit a sick cousin. So I thought I would try to give you a better idea of what daily life is like. First the weather. It's always around 30 degrees in my room, day or night, give or take a degree. I think it's definitely hotter than that outdoors during the day, but the only thermometer I have is on my travel alarm clock in the room. I know people feel sorry for me because even though I seldom mention it (I don't want them to think I'm unhappy) it's quite evident that I'm feeling the heat. It's always ... read more

Set off early in the morning on another sunny day & drove down from the relatively cool mountains. We stopped for lunch in Chilinze, a large junction/town seemingly in the middle of nowhere selling just about everything. Along with the usual lads selling biscuits & nuts were some who had made detailed tin replicas of our Dragoman truck. We ate chipsy omelette at one of the roadside restaurants & it was exactly as it sounds, an omelette containing chips served with luminous pink watery ketchup. We got into Dar Es Salaam in the afternoon & were met by the overpowering smell of the fish market as we waited for the ferry to cross to Mikadi beach. Our campsite had a saltwater pool & a bar selling vodka slushies in handpainted enamelled beakers - surprisingly alcoholic but ... read more

Today I had the chance to go to Bagamoyo, a little town about 70 km from Dar, with Thomas who had to give a speech. I would be able to wander around and explore the area and we would meet up later to return to Dar. This sounded particularly interesting to me because Bagamoyo has great historical significance to Tanzania and to Africa -- it was one of the three main exit points of the slaves who were captured here. Oh boy. Nothing like facing our horrendous history head on. Day three! Here we go. Away we went by daladala (of course) but on paved road, thank goodness, which does make a difference. Only Thomas very thoughtfully arranged for us to sit in the front seat so I could see where we were going. Two of ... read more

Hi Everybody! I have arrived safe and sound in Dar es Salaam, the "Haven of Peace", which may be overstating it a little but so far so good. The flight was absolute madness in the sense that no human being was ever meant to spend sixteen hours in the air, but I survived it. Although it will take three months before I'm ready to board another aircraft, I do think I'll be able to get back on without being drugged and dragged. Which is good news for those of you who were concerned about my never coming home, and bad news for those of you who picked "BA Baracus" in the pool. Sorry if you lost money. That's an A Team reference for those of you who missed it, and I promise the only one I ... read more

Lovely Lady Luck... This past month has been testament to the unpredictability of life. At any given time, one can never really know where you will be, what you will be doing, with whom, or what will befall you during any given event....... The following list is in no particular order: 1. Biking in Bagamoyo The decision to go to Bagamoyo, the original capital of German East Africa, was made about an hour before packing up and heading out the door (of course, after much waffling). After three rather unpleasantly long dalla dalla rides, we were settled in our romantic banda on the beach and ready to explore the area. The name comes from “bwaga moyo,” which means “lay down your heart,” encompassing the despair that the slaves felt upon reaching the last port on the ... read more
