Okay, well that might be a slight exaggeration, but I caught your attention anyway. On Friday after being in the city centre and writing this blog, I came home to find that...my fan had died. Oh man oh man oh man oh man. I tell you, I hit all the main stages of grief. Denial -- oh no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no. I kept turning it off and on, thinking that would do something, it HAD to do something. Then bargaining -- please oh please oh please, I'll do anything. I know I've been neglectful, but I'll spend more time at home with you. I'll clean you, I know you're terribly dirty, just switch on and I'll take all that grime away. Nothing. Then anger -- ... read more

Today is public holiday...specifically Nyerere Day, in honour of the first president of the United Republic of Tanzania, which only came into being in 1964. Nyerere is dead now, but he is still widely revered as the father of the country, and his picture hangs beside that of the current president in schools and government buildings. He is recognized as a man who single-handedly united over 120 tribes into a single functioning nation. He is also acknowledged as the main reason for the continuing stability of this country, which is after all on a continent where bloody civil wars are the normal course of business. Nyerere made Swahili the national language, which was successful to the point that everyone speaks it even though it is nobody's original first language. He also promoted an atmosphere of family, ... read more

Well, this will be a sort of laid back entry compared to the last one. Nothing too exciting is going on, but I like to keep in touch. I noticed this week that I am feeling really comfortable here. I am understanding pretty well how things work and it no longer seems to threatening to me when I don't. I feel like myself here, and I feel like I fit. Pretty cool eh? My placement is picking up steam as well. This week I have been working with Carol, who is a friend of Dorcas from school, on the data analysis for a questionnaire FOGOTA distributed to their group members while they were doing the training in Kagera region during the summer. This is good experience for me, especially considering at my last placement we did ... read more

So here's a really awful thing that happened... On Friday night I was sitting out on the little front step of our hostel, enjoying the last of the daylight and a small breeze that had appeared toward the end of the afternoon. I got a phone call on the cell I use here from a number I didn't recognize. Hmm...that's odd. Hello? Hi, can I speak to Jackie Turner. Yes, speaking. Hi, this is _________ (I can't remember the name, you'll see why in a minute) from the Canadian High Commission in Dar es Salaam. I was so excited, I was thinking, wow, a courtesy call, how cool. I had registered with them when I got here because it is highly recommended that you do so if you are going to be out of the country ... read more

Hakuna Matada! (No worries!) (I’ve just added lots of you to my travel blog. I've done a couple of entries already so you should be able to go back and view them if you want to check it out. And if you don't want to get an e-mail every time I make a new entry, just click the ‘unsubscribe’ button in the e-mail. No worries!) Anyway, I've been in Tanzania for less than a week and I have so much to write about!! First of all . . . the journey. It was long. The best part was that we actually got to see a bit of Ethiopia because we had a 7 hour layover there and apparently it's Ethiopian Airlines normal practice to put those with a layover up in a hotel. Poa! (Cool!) So ... read more

So today I have to start on a sad note. Yesterday would have been my grandpa's 80th birthday had he not died this past January. I miss him so much and not a day goes by that I don't think of him. He would have loved what I'm doing here. He had such a sense of fun and adventure himself, and he loved to know what was going on. He would have thought this was a hoot. So...it's not exactly the Royal York...the Msimbazi Centre, where I am staying, I mean. We have been without internet access for the better part of the week, and for two nights we were without water. That has happened a couple of times since I've been here and it never fails to break my heart at the end of a ... read more

Having been on Canadian soil for almost three weeks now has been both challenging and rewarding. I love the fact that you get reverse culture shock in the place that you call home. However, it has been wonderful to catch up with family and friends and very interesting to re-experience certain things that I took for granted before I left. One example is the supermarket - the sheer size, vast array of goods, and sterile environment left me with the feeling that we truly do have everything we could possibly want at our fingertips. Visiting the mall was even more of a shock as I managed to make it to only Lululemon before booting it out of there (yes, I realize I was a bit of a mall-rat, but no more…) But I digress…… the main ... read more

Hello everybody, No internet access last night at our little cafe, which is why I'm doing this this morning. I went to placement but Ali is working on something that we need before I can continue with my work, so I said great, I'll be back in an hour. I'm happy -- this is a different internet cafe from the two I usually use, and the one with the best air conditioning so far. So I am quite content for the next little while. I had a good weekend exploring the city centre. Saturday I got up and did my weekly Shoprite run (even found some candy -- how fun is that?) then in the afternoon I took my Lonely Planet Tanzania (travel guide, for those of you who don't know) and explored the city with ... read more

Up at 5am! I used to get paid for getting up this early, NOT paying to be up this early! The 12 hour truck journey to Dar Es Salaam warranted this early rise and it was nice to see the sunrise over the gorgeous dryness of Northern Tanzania. Once fed and watered we were on our way. Again, the roads were rough but the sites were amazing. Everyone was like a caged animal, pee stops were a welcome relief for this beast of a journey. Luckily, Darren had covertly slipped Charlie a CD compilation and for a few hours we were all happily attempting to outsing one another with Fergal Sharkey, The Proclaimers and other similar international hits of the early nineties!! A few more pee, lunch photo stops later we saw Mount Kilimanjaro (“The Roof ... read more

The last couple of days have been spent trying to get me "legitimized" in the eyes of the Tanzanian government. Although I have my visa, we were not able to get me a residency permit before I got here, which is something I'm supposed to have. Ali and Thomas discussed it, specifically the risk involved in just ignoring it, and finally decided it wasn't worth it. I agreed since I will have to renew my visa while I'm here and I figure when the time comes we will be busted. The hardest part has been that the authorities told Ali he had to go through a certain branch of the government -- the Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH) -- because I'm a student. But as it turns out they only issue permits when you are ... read more
