I didn’t plan it this way, but spending three weeks learning Swahili outside of Iringa was the perfect introduction to Tanzania. Even though I’ve been to Tanzania before, and I’ve done a lot of traveling, culture shock is always a nasty reminder that I am in fact human and I cannot always predict and control my responses to travel experiences. Since I’m writing this entry several weeks after the fact, I can reflect on how my gentle introduction to Tanzania was a blessing. The Iringa Swahili School (http://www.swahilitanzania.com/) holds its lessons at River Valley Camp, which is nestled up along the Little Ruaha River and a half hour drive to Iringa town. I spent three weeks there, October 8-28. The Camp consists of stone and tented bandas, little wooden cabins, a dining room, a TV room, ... read more

We had a challenging start to our safari when we got up early and were transferred to the main terminal of the Dar es Salaam airport (terminal 2), only to discover that our airline only flew from the (much smaller) terminal 1. When we managed to get to terminal 1, we discovered that we were going to be boarding a plane with 11 passengers, 1 pilot and no toilet on board! Eeek! Fortunately, the flight was actually very smooth and we landed at our air strip without incident. We were taken on a game drive en route to our permanent tented camp at Lake Manze and had our first glimpses of baboons, impala, lions, giraffes (including a couple of babies less than a week old), zebras and wildebeest! Very exciting for first time safari goers (although ... read more

While discussing how we could assist Msalato and the nursery/kindergarten with the Rev. Canon Moses Matonya, who is the Principal at Msalato Theological College, Moses mentioned that the nursery/kindergarten had two teachers who are working on a voluntary basis. The school normally gives them a small amount of money every month just as a way of thanking them for their work with the children. The college normally ask friends from inside and outside the college community to donate whatever money they can as a way of encouraging these lovely women to continue teaching the children. The parents of the children who attend also contribute, but many of them are very poor and so they can't. There are 45 children registered with the nursery/kindergarten although regular attendance is between 30 and 35 per day as some fail ... read more

The nursery building at Msalato is, as you can see by the picture, in need of some renovation. The College is undertaking major renovations and God has provided the money to complete the project. When it is completed it should look beautiful & strong. A wall will also be constructed around the nursery so that the children can then play outside in safety, however money was not available to supply and fit two grilled gates. Evelyn & Jess have been happy to assist the college with funding for these gates. The following pictures show the outside building renovations have been completed and the building of the wall has been completed, we are however still waiting for pictures of the finished gates.... read more

As mentioned previously Ernest & Ester's have two children, Gloria aged 8 attends the local government primary school and Donald aged 4 attends the Msalato nursery. The government primary schools in Tanzania are free to attend and it is compulsory for every child who has reached the age of seven years to be enrolled for primary education. While primary school tuition fees in public schools was eliminated in 2002 families still must pay for uniforms, testing fees, and school supplies. Evelyn & Jess have set up a sponsorship fund for Gloria and Donald to enable Ernest & Ester to pay all the necessary fees required to send Gloria to primary school & Donald to the Msalato nursery. The fund is utilised via an Australia Post Load & Go re-loadable card. This allows Ernest & Ester to ... read more

In Lynne Clarke’s October 2010 Prayer Points, Lynne said: - Pray that the needs of one excellent student will be met. He still does not have sponsorship. Ernest Ndahani is a degree student at Msalato, one of their best students and Ernest required assistance with sponsorship in order to finish his degree course, at this stage he was there by the grace of God. Ernest needed sponsorship for the final 2 years of his degree studies. Along with the people I work for we were able to arrange the funds for the two years and for Ernest that period ended on 30th June 2012, Ernest has now completed his final exams and is waiting for his results & what post he will occupy. One of the great benefits of us going to Tanzania was for ... read more

We arrived in Dar es Salaam at about 2.00pm on Thursday 15th March having flown in from Johannesburg where I had been attending a Cards & Payment conference. We were met at the airport by Pam who had flown in from Ethiopia 20 minutes earlier, God at work here. we arrived to a large welcome sign held by Pam and to the smiles of our driver Amani. We all stayed at the Blue Pearl hotel which was a bit up market, very modern & clean and close to the bus station. The next morning Pam negotiated a taxi to take us to the bus station because although it was close there are no footpaths. On arrival at the bus station Pam negotiated with the porters to carry our luggage to the bus and she made sure ... read more
