And so the adventure begins... SOUTH AFRICA 19th October: LondonDohaJohannesburg Arrived in J'burg about 5am-was so bloody tired cause couldn't sleep on the plane. Took a chance and got a taxi to hostel where I met mumma & her friend Bev. Had some breaky and then slept!! Got up round lunch time and went into Soweto, a township in J'burg with a pop. of 4.5 million blacks-it was only in 1992 that white people were allowed to enter this part of J'burg. Heaps of cute children. While we were there visited the Hector Peterson Museum-in memory of the named,a 13yr old student, who was shot dead during a rally of students protesting against learning Africaans on 16th June 1976. Hey Guys!!! We thought we'd give you a quick update and write more details later, it's hard to find computer time here because South Africa is absolutely amazing!! It is by far the best place we have been and the highlight of our trip thus far, we are thoroughly enjoying ourselves. So, we started off in Jo'Berg and went on a Safari, which was very cool. We saw the big five: Leopard, lion, elephant, buffalo and rhino. As well as giraffes (tons of them), impala, monkeys, baboons, hyianas (not sure on the spelling), zebras and many many more...it was something else seeing them so close. Then we flew down to Capetown and did a Township tour. A township is basically an area of a city, or just an area that people live in shacks, it is ... read more

O illustrious denizens of compound interest in the fascination of dreamtime avenues, O Greeters of the dawn, O mindspring overloaders and resistors of note: Yeah though we walk in the shadow of bomber Harris, we fear no fear for we are the cut and pasted, the transplants of civilisation, the x-pollinators of memetic positivity, the destroyers of evil myth and unbelivers in lies, transhumanic fad creators, photons of half-life in the blue beam of fractal reality where an infinity of waiting for schroedinger's cat can't prepare the unwary to grok the fact that it's not all black...we each view reality through our own rosestta stone where understanding intent can give one powers close to those described in Sun Tsu's 'Art of War' where it leads to understanding that continually uploading the correct memetic technology is one ... read more

It's been 3 weeks since my last blog, so this is going to be yet another lengthy article. In that time I've traveled from Cape Town to Durban along the coast, visiting places on the Garden Route and Sunshine coast. The Garden route, Sunshine coast and Wild coast are all marketing names for the stretch of coast between Cape Town and Durban. The first part of the coast is known as the Garden Route. which is very scenic coastline of indigenous forest, lagoons, dunes and beaches. Other highlights of my trip have to include the Cango Caves in Oudtshorn and the walking trail in the forests around Hogsback. Hogsback claims to be the inspiration for J.R.R. Tolkein's Lord of the Rings'. Tolkein was born in South Africa and is supposed to have visited Hogsback when he ... read more

Damn it...I just tried to post a good, long post but lost it somewhere in cyberspace. So this will be shorter than it's supposed to be, but hopefully it'll say what it needs to. So I leave Cape Town in a few days...it's been a really interesting experience, and though it hasn't been perfect it's been a learning process the whole time. Uhm...yeah, so since I don't feel like rewriting this all over again, I'm just going to say that I'll tell better stories the next time i see/talk to you guys, and I'm looking forward to being home (or whatever best approximates home for the time being). Love and such BernieBear... read more

Hi everyone, I know it's been a while since I've emailed. We just returned from Durban/St. Lucia, where we had little to no phone/email access. So much has happened since I last wrote, so I don't know if I can give everything credit here. I won't try to, so next time I talk to everyone, I'll tell better stories :). It seems like weeks since I've been in CT. Most of the past week we spent in the small rural community of Hlabisa, where we did a short homestay, and on safari in St. Lucia. Most of what I said before about the trip still stands - it was such a strange divide between Hlabisa and going on a safari. It was all so interesting and fun though. So my homestay "granny" was Gloria Mangele, who ... read more

Geo: -34.1826, 18.4584Needed to keep Rebecca happy and make a lightning trip to Cape Town to visit the penguins in Simonstown. We stayed in our nicest hotel so far, right on Boulders Beach where the penguins were. The penguins put on a fantastic performance. So many of them and they're pretty entertaining birds to watch. So clumsy on land but acrobats in the water. Rebecca was in paradise as she's loved penguins all her life. We woke up early for the sunset and that was magical. Beautiful beautiful colours silhouetting the penguins. I was tempted to pppick up a penguin but apparently they have razor sharp beaks!! We stayed in Cape Town at Long Street Backpackers for a few nights. Had lots of fun most of which I can't remember! Cape Town's a fun place to ... read more

Sawbona and Molo from Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape! I am writing to you from the beach city of Port Elizabeth, South Africa's 5th largest city. People here talk about the "big five," and they mean animals (hippo, rhino, elephant, lion, and leopard), but on the Fulbright Hays we have a different "big five," that would be South Africa's top five cities, all of which we will visit on our tour. On Sunday we landed in Durban, a center of Indian culture in the province of KwaZulu Natal, or KZN. KZN, as you might imagine, is also the native homeland of the Zulu people and the province that is hardest hit by the HIV/AIDS pandemic. The realities of this are striking when you consider the following information we learned in our briefing from the eThekwini Department of ... read more
