This was to be the first day that we had no accommodation booked and also no decision made as to where we end up. We knew we needed to be near the wine region in 2 days but decided that we should get there early to at least give us a chance of tasting some. Jill got on the phone at our first petrol stop and booked the first B&B we thought we could reach in a day. The petrol stops were great fun; imagine 4 or 5 lads all dressed like formula 1 pit crews all vying for your attention to drive up to their pump arms waving and all smiling like mad men. They went around the car cleaning all the windows whilst the fuel at about 40p a litre filled up. The 550 ... read more

Zane and the Penguins He sidled up to us as we peered through the wire netting at a couple of sleepy-eyed “Jackass” penguins, more properly known as African Penguins. Their nickname is evidenced by the wild honking and braying that erupts from time to time as the next team arrives home from a day’s fishing and each male attempts to shack up with the wrong missus. Just as he opened his mouth to tell us about the penguins, a canon fired from a naval vessel docked a short ways north at Simonstown, its boom echoing around the mountains. Zane and a couple of fluffy penguins, swished under their mum, winced and took a moment to recover. When Zane did recover, though, the torrent of information that poured from him, punctuated only by the repeated boom ... read more

We are, however, unable to remember a word of it!!! We set off on our second adventure in Cara Corsa at around midday. We had a third travelling companion in the form of Pam, a fellow i-to-i'er and Chill and Surf resident, as we drove east towards Fish hoek. Our first stopping off point was Simon's Town...Boulders Beach to be more specific!!! As we paid our entrance fee and wandered along the wooden walkway, nothing could have prepared us for the magnificent sight of hundreds of African (Jackass) penguins. After a lot of aahhh'ing and even more photos we came away having only smuggled the odd bird into our bags!!! After a bite ... read more

Yesterday we went on a trip to Cape Point, which is next to the Cape of Good Hope, Simon's Town and Boulders Beach. We did the normal trek up the mountain to the lighthouse to see views of both Cape Point, the southwestern most tip of the African continent, and the Cape of Good Hope, discovered by Bartholomeus Diaz the Portugese explorer. The water was beautiful and the weather was great! Then we went to Simon's Town for lunch and to Boulders Beach to see the African penguins. Apparently there is an area that we could have gone to actually swim with the penguins, but we didn't know about it in time to go before we had to leave. Simon's Town was a really cool little town right on the coast of False Bay so naturally ... read more

Hey guys, just a quick note and some pics... we did the cape peninsula tour today and it was stunning. I've never seen so many mountains, valleys, beaches, and wild animals! Today I saw, in the wild, an ostrich, some zebra, baboons, african penguins (super cute oh my god!) and assorted lizards and birds. What a cool place! And it was warm today with a strong sun so now my face is a little "tanned" :o) Anyway, enjoy these pics, i'll put up more later but internet cafe is so slow it takes sooo long to upload pics.
