To close out our big adventure, we had decided to take one last train trip and use it as a last opportunity to see a bit more countryside before we left this great continent. First, let me say that the Trans Karoo Train taking us from Johannesburg back to Cape Town was everything the Tazara Train was not. Clean, relatively quiet, working toilets, white bedding and linen, a real dining car with porcelain and a wine list! But then, also a bit dull, a bit predictable, nothing really went wrong . . . But there were also similarities between the two. Did you notice that both trains begin with a 'T'? Once again we had a double sleeper car to ourselves with 2 benches that turned into beds and a central table. Once again, the train ... read more

Driving north through ever changing scenery: from dramatically rising mountainscape through lush rolling countryside with orchards and vineyards; and finally the desert – endless stretches of red earth streaked with luminous yellow grass, bordered by the ethereal purple bluish hue of distant mountains. I am racing against the clock because I know they are closing around three and this is the only day I have up here. At one o’clock still nothing. I stop at a little tourist information place in a one-horse-town; there they direct me off the main road. Another 50km or so. It’s a dirt track, dusty and slow. And then, just as I’m starting to wonder why I’m doing this, I see it, one of the great spectacles of nature: flowers, carpets of them, covering the desert floor, flooding it with an ... read more

We took a drive up to Springbok with Grant and Revouna, they went to visit her family and we drove another 150km to Port Nolloth to visit my Dad and Wanda at Macdougalls's Bay, I can almost say where our love for camping started 4 years earlier. This was our first stopover on our way to Richtersveld in 2007... We had a good laugh and really enjoyed visiting with them there. The accomodation is very basic and we should rather have camped but it was a short visit so we could stick it out for two nights! anyway...here are a few pics... ... read more

Hi all, we are now at port nollith a campsite called Mac dougalls bay after a stop over at Springbok, what is it with these municaple parks, after staying in a private park it is realy a let down to come to one of these parks, thay generally have awsome parks but very run down, no maintenance and shabby ablutions, well enough moaning. Once again the gremlins were with us, after leaving Clan william all went well for 80 km. then buksie started over heating, it was a very hot day 30 + so we unhitched buksietjie and Wanda had to drive her and i drove buksie but to no avail, just kept on over heating, so we decided to stop over at Springbok to sort out the problem, unfortunatly there isnt much in the way ... read more

M – Back again. Getting on line in Namibia when you are camping, although possible, doesn’t really fit with the flow of the whole thing. As such I have been ‘off-air’ for longer than normal. To catch up the next few blogs will be short and hopefully sweet with the ‘story’ told by the photos. Day 1 - Rather than risk delays at the border and arrive at night at our first camp site we played safe and drove 750km North from Cape town to the Orange River which forms the boundary for the South Africa and Namibian from the West Coast inland several hundred km. The landscape began to change into desert a couple of hundred km from the border. We were told to keep a look out for the desert flowers. We couldn’t miss ... read more

Hi all, we have arived at tieties bay after 2 potensial trip enders, firstly coming down Ou kaapse weg our brakes decided we were over loaded and to heavy to stop and we nearly wiped out a couple of cars waiting at a robot, and when we arived at tieties bay the tow hitch on the back of buksie was only just hanging on, the nylock nuts holding the hitch had worked itself lose, well you can never be to carefull is what I have learnt. Tieties bay is a beutiful place to stay, there are only 4 other campers here so lots of of space for all, there is no hot water or electricity so it is back to basics, thank goodness for buksies hot water, we are not sure yet how long we are ... read more

Relaxing in Upington Colette and Dave Taylor decided to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary at Kuthula Lodge in Upington and invited a few friends along for a long weekend. Kuthula Lodge was like a little lush paradise in the dessert, with its deep green grass and lush Kameeldoring bome contrasting against the red sand dunes and blue skies. It was really hot during the day, making it really easy to spend a lot of time in and around their crystal clear pool. The De Klerk family are very hospitable and made sure we were settled and looked after our every need, Ma Beulah cooked the most amazing roast lamb for us (fresh from their farm). We relaxed and enjoyed many laughs. On Saturday we had a braai in the Lapa entertainment area of the lodge. The ... read more
