Should we take the low road or the high road? Driving to Mountain Sanctuary Park from home, the distance is shorter going via Breedts Neck pass than going via Hartebeespoort dam, probably by about 30km. The only trouble is the 'gravel' road over the pass. The last time we travelled that route was quite a few years ago and then already the road was in a bad condition. How much more had it deteriorated? Reports from the 4 x 4 forums and others that had travelled it in the last couple of months varied. We would just have to see for ourselves. It has become a tradition to go to Mountain Sanctuary in the Magaliesberg at Easter time. Traffic is not as bad - always chaos down to Natal, chaos travelling north, with too much delay, ... read more

Woke early to the Tarentaal guinea foul calling, thank goodness they hadn't set of the perimeter alarm as they sometimes do. Love being able to hear the birds, nestled at this beautiful home under the Magaliesberg mountains. Aunty Pauline and Uncle Dave treated us to a beautiful breakfast seated on the veranda overlooking their infinity pool. I had papaya fruit for the first time in over 30 years, miss that taste. Followed with Rooibos and raspberry yoghurt, some scrambled eggs and bacon. Definitely an amazing start to our holiday. We were introduced to the maid and gardener, again another part of Africa I'd forgotten. The concept of servants is foreign now. It was great that Aunty Pauline took us on a short run through Rustenberg the previous day, because we were ale to find all the ... read more

We experienced the most wonderful re-introduction to Africa I could have imagined. Friends of our family from the time we lived here welcomed us into their home, and what a beautiful home it is. An understated lavender-coloured and surprisingly spacious colonial cottage is filled with elegant and beautiful rooms, each with it's own unique character. The building is not very old but it has been built using old material, the most stunning of which is the wood. The floor boards groan with age as we walk around. The old timber windows frame the beautiful views from every angle. Every room takes your breath away and every little nook has something to offer with small surprises everywhere like the miniature sheep in front of the fireplace and a small bookcase dedicated to the 'Grandkids'. Not one but ... read more

We lived in a small mining town and our closest city with all the usual amenities was Rustenburg. Again, we have an abundance of memories from our time here, not the least of which was attending a local church. It was housed in a beautiful old house with a dungeon beneath. I can still remember the smell of that dungeon and I was always scared that I would accidentally be forgotten down there one day. The children's program was often held there, perhaps because it was so quiet. It was amazingly cold which was a welcome relief on hot days. The house was surrounded by trees including a mulberry bush where we would pick leaves for silk worms. The tree also provided a great climbing structure for us all. There was also an avocado tree and ... read more

It was raining cats and dogs, as my mother used to say, when we left OR TAMBO International Airport for the long drive to Rustenberg. Uncle Dave took the freeway so we could miss the traffic. We were treated with some amazing country side. Some of which was familiar and some so sad. Signs to Pretoria Hartbeesport dam, Brits, Mooinooi, Marikana all familiar. Then Dave and Pauline's home appears over the rise. Amazing view. Amazing decor. Amazing life. Peaceful, serene and idealic. After settling in for an hour or so, Aunty Pauline took us on a cook's tour of Rustenberg. We got to see our old church building, now the offices for a car sales yard; our Wimpy bar we frequented every Sunday, now a black African lair; and Grenville High School, now a primarily black ... read more

We met Jane, Eric, Karen (Jane’s daughter) and Karens son, Gianni at Pilanesberg Game Reserve. We spent 2 nights there. Jane and Eric had a tented camp set up for us. They are permanent canvas tents with wood front and doors. They used to be all canvas but the baboons kept tearing the doors open. We had Impala, mongoose, baboons, guinea fowl and Yellow hornbills around our tent a lot. Jane is an H.O. (Honorary officer) at this reserve. She drove us around different places in the park. We saw white rhino and an elephant herd with babies, also giraffes and zebras. We were happy about the rhino picture because we never got a good picture of rhino in Kruger. Note: 2 days before we arrived at Pilanesberg a bull elephant rolled a car with a ... read more

Getting around South Africa ain't easy. Especially going to a little town like Rustenburg that doesn't even have a direct route to Johannesburg. Rustenburg shouldn't really exist as a town at all, except it's sitting on the biggest deposit of platinum on the planet. The other other things it has is the "Platinum Highway" linking it to Pretoria and the Royal Bafaking Stadium -- a name that lends itself to misuse. After failing to hire a driver we had to resort to driving ourselves. Wayne kindly offered to do the driving but Tim and I vetoed that idea immediately -- Wayne's much better company drunk than sober. I ended up driving by default, so the three of us collected our Elvis costumes and piled into the car for the 3 hour trip. Wayne mentioned that he ... read more

Friday (18/6/2010) We arrived to the breakfast room greeted by host Scott, bacon and eggs how you like ‘em, plus cereal, toast, quiche, juice coffee, fruit salad and yogurt. Perfectly poached eggs and some directions we walked to collect our hire car. Our Kia Picanto (despite its tiny boot) was definite upgrade on our Citi golf (mini tank from St Lucia), we set off for the mall. Dodging some local drivers we arrived to a huge mall, 300 plus shops and barely more than a handful of Aussie soccer shirts. Keen for some warmer layers Carly jumped ship scoring a cheap Brazil jumper. We grabbed some lunch and hit the road for Rustenberg ahead of Australia’s second game. We arrived at the Traveller’s Inn, checked in with some complimentary sherry and set up camp. Made slightly ... read more

I had an early start that morning as I seemed to do every day on this trip. I packed up my gear then went down stairs to wait for my car to be delivered at 8am. Naturally the car company was late with delivery, but it was a cute little car none the less. I departed the hostel thinking, I knew the way out of town, but I must admit I was a bit nervous driving on African roads for the first time and this probably lead to me missing the turn off. I was on a one way road and couldn’t turn around so I took a road on the left that took me into a produce market area. I couldn’t find an exit so I wound down my window to ask directions of couple ... read more

Geo: -25.6688, 27.2396For all their effort, improvement and endeavor against Ghana, Australia still now stand teetering precariously on the brink of elimination from this world cup.Australia is certainly making a habit out of being at the heart of World Cup Controversy. There was plenty of it 4 years ago in Germany, and here on African soil, for the second game running, luck didnt go Australia's way.It was to be another 24 hour shift for myself. We were picked up at our hotel @ 4am for the journey to Johannesburg, and onwards by bus to Rustenburg. It was again a painful ordeal for the most part... the tour group rife with disorganisation, ambiguity and that 'itl work itself out' attitude that continuously aches my soul. After piling onto buses at Johannesburg we began the long bus trip to ... read more
