Well I never! Woke up this morning, looked out the bedroom window (aka Boeing 747) and what should I see...........only blooming South Africa!!! Had a good flight, took off at 18:50 instead of 17:50 as some plonker checked in but didn't board the plane so they had to scramble through all the luggage to get this person's back off off the plane. Do they literally have to search through all the name tags on all the bags and hope the one they're lookig for is somewhere near the front? Bummer if it was the last one they got to! Watched a couple movies on the plane - Beowolf and Juno. Just started watching Enchanted and we had to land, how rude! Managed to get a few hours kip. Was mighty confused when they switched the lights ... read more

Phalaborwa airport was tiny but so nice with statues of African wildlife dotted around the place. Apparently I have to experience the toilets when I fly back, intriguing. A guy called Matthew was there to meet me to take me to the monkey rehab, he had a board with my name on it held up, made me feel all important (I expect the same treatment when I come home please as obviously I'll be unrecognisable with this awesome tan I'm building up). Had about an hours drive back to the centre and, like you do, saw a troop of baboons chilling out on the side of the road and black and white antelope out in the bush (so glad that when asked "can you see that?" I answered with "ummmm" rather than "oh my god, is ... read more

There are still stories that are left over from Kenya...but that is for another day. I am now at the Vervet Monkey Foundation in South Africa. Getting here was somewhat interesting. Leaving Kenya went without a hitch until I was waiting uncertaintly in the airport when my flight was supposed to have left, unsure of what was going on. Eventually the plane came, and people boarded, so I guess that makes sense. I was never really clued in. All the airport stuff was just regular, except it felt completely alien to be in an airplane with air conditioning. That was the beginning of many fragmented moments of culture shock. Riana, a work contact of my moms, met me at the airport and took me to her house. She was great and I got my own room ... read more

Hi All, I've now been in Africa for 10 weeks...HOORAY! I am truly loving it more and more each day. I know I haven't posted in awhile, and those who know me well, know I'm horrible about corresponding, but here's a nice long post complete with photos. Also, this may be the last post in awhile since I'm leaving on Monday to the Baboon Sanctuary (C.A.R.E.) and there's no internet there...so I guess my attempt at travel blogging failed miserably...sorry guys. Tons of things have happened since I posted last and I'll try to cover as much as I can. "What would you say ya do here?" (if you know this quote, I love you) Let's discuss exactly what goes on at the Vervet Monkey Foundation :) Usually I get up at 7 and monitor the ... read more

Hi guys. Turns out I do get internet here, and although it's slow as hell, it's a pleasure to be able to surf around in my down time. Anyway let's get to the good stuff - monkeys! I really don't know how I'm supposed to describe being here. It's amazing and gorgeous and far more than I could have asked for. The whole sanctuary is huge with about 8 different enclosures and two wild "bandit" troups. Most of the vervets come from past owners, were injured by farmers, found as orphans, or born here. So far I've had some great opporunities. The first day I was with the orphans...which ROCKED! You just sit and play and feed them. 5 of them in all - Acorn, Nandini, Vibrance, Innocence, and Scooter - and they're about 8 weeks. ... read more

Hey everybody, It's been a while. I have been volunteering at the Vervet Monkey Foundation in South Africa for the last month. It has been quite an experience. The foundation is located in the bush about a half hour away from the nearest town, Tzaneen. Tzaneen is about a 7 hour bus ride from Johannesburg. I lived in a tented village. The tents were the cheapest you can find though and they were constantly getting flooded and infested with frogs. The weather was really strange there. It would be cold and rainy for 4 days straight, and my tent would constantly be flooded during this time. Then for the next four days it would be incredibly hot and sunny. There are over 700 vervet monkeys on the foundation. They are brought in generally because their mother's ... read more
