Howick, Midmar Nature Reserve to Ballito Bay (146 km or 90 miles), Thursday, March 13th. Left the campground and went back up highway 103 to the Nelson Mandela capture site to look at the museum there. The museum consisted entirely of large photos blown up with writings and sayings on them, hung along the walls. The photos detailed his youth, his family, his education, and other aspects of his life. After walking through the museum, we looked at the craft shops where the women were doing pictures out of beads and some other craft work. Valerie took pictures of the very interesting large, imposing, metal sculpture that stands in the front entrance by the road. It is a picture of Mandela’s face behind bars, but you only see his face in the work if you stand ... read more

Today we have been doing the tourist thing, just to prove we do sometimes, despite what people think. We were awoken again this morning by the Egyptian Geese alarm clock as it got light, and as I sit this evening writing this they are calling away outside, but these geese must be unique as the roost in trees, particularly the tall eucalyptus trees. After a wonderful breakfast where the menu offers starters, main course and dessert we headed off on a leisurely drive down to Howick to see the spectacular waterfall which crashes 110 meters down the vertical rock face. As it’s a Saturday the locals were out completing the weekly wash at the top of the falls, seemingly oblivious that a step in the wrong direction could send them plummeting over the edge. Next stop ... read more

After arriving late last we had time to grab a quick shower to wash away the dust then we were treated to sumptuous five course meal at the award winning restaurant here, with wine selected for each course. After so much time spent on the road it was a fantastic way to finish off the day. This morning after a posh breakfast we went on a tour of the stud. To explain, Hartford House hotel shares its site with Summerhill stud farm, with a grand tradition of producing racing thoroughbreds. No doubt those in the know would recognise some of the names of the horses that we were introduced to, i.e. paraded in front of us. Mick Goss who owns the place has met the Queen and is quite eloquent when talking about being a self-made ... read more

Despite having been to Africa before, today has been the hardest day of travelling we have ever experienced. Ten hours on the road to cover 600 km, or to put it another way an average speed of 37 mph. For the cyclists among our readers we have had a total gain today of 22,000 feet and we are now up in the Drakensberg Mountains. Meg has been complaining of dehydration and altitude sickness! The Eastern Cape where we started this morning is very different to places we have travelled before in South Africa and Namibia; it has suffered from under-investment for many years and the road infrastructure is fairly poor. We had completed nearly 20km this morning before we were able to get into fourth gear. Today we had another first, something that we said we ... read more

With 600 km to drive today, we were up at 05h30 and were all packing up our tents. So efficient were we that we were able to set off at 07h00. The first few miles took us along dirt tracks and windy roads, through hills and homesteads before we made it on to the main N2 and headed off, at speed, towards the Indian Ocean. On each side of the road, trees lined up awaiting their fate in the paper industry and eventually, even they disappeared, leaving savannah. Along side the road, fruit stalls provided their owners with meagre income from the truckers who stopped for a bite. Running parallel with the Indian Ocean, we soon found ourselves in the Durban suburbs with grassland being replaced by shopping centres and DIY stores. Continuing on without stopping ... read more

Shish!!! What a day! Well I’ve not had much sleep over the last few days, but I was awoken by my alarm at 6am, so I must have been sleeping! I sprang out of bed - clearly the sleep had done me good! I felt much brighter and full of energy, although my throat hurt more than before and it was much harder to swallow - clearly the tonsillitis has not yet gone. I showered and ate my breakfast, then had to leave at 7:30am. Grant and Shelly are away for a few days, which means I’m looking after the animals (more on that later!) and also I had to pick up some food for for Ethembeni. Every Thursday, the care workers from the Ethembeni hospice, along with volunteers from Howick Community Church, go out for ... read more

My usual morning routine is to get up between 5:30 & 5:45am, have a shower, lots of breakfast and spend a while reading my Bible and praying before work at 8am. However, since being ill, I have been trying to get as much rest as possible, even sleeping in until 7am! Then I spend the morning chilling out, or working at home, preparing myself for the Family Centre, which seems to finish me off in a couple of hours! So this morning, I was sitting in bed, eating my first breakfast and watching a movie at 8:30am when my phone rang. I didn’t recognize the number and it’s still quite an effort to talk, so I didn’t want to speak to someone I didn’t know. Well, when I tried to get into my voicemail, it wanted ... read more

So Sunday was not a good day, I was so sick I didn’t even make it to church, which is really saying something! I spent pretty much the whole day in bed watching movies, although by late afternoon I felt well enough to get up and make some cupcakes, yummy! Part way through icing them, I ran out of energy, so they were the plainest cupcakes so far! In the evening, I was invited over to Grant & Shelly’s as it was Andy’s last night in Merrivale. Not wanting to turn down what I was sure would be a fantastic meal, I accepted. Grant had cooked for a change, and he assured me it was traditional a South African dish, then went on to say he had chucked anything he could find in it! It didn’t ... read more

Well, well, well! Today's been quite a lazy day, I've stayed at home all day, with the exception of a quick trip to the Spar! I woke up with an incredibly sore throat, so decided I'd rather stay in bed and watch a movie than get up - the luxury of a rare day without plans! Today was a lovely warm day, so I thought it might do me some good to sit outside for a while. A while lasted about 2 minutes, when I decided the sun was too hot and bright, so came back inside! Some smartie pants would probably remind me at this point that the sun is always hot and bright, it's a burning ball of gas, but you know what I mean. I decided that, given the lack of plans, it ... read more

Did you not read the title? Not much to report on today, I decided to prepare for the trillions of Holiday Club planning meetings next week, and I decided this would be much easier to do from the comfort of my warm, comfy, quiet cottage, rather than the Family Centre. So, my day began with a lovely long look into the book of James - thank you very much David for e-mailing your notes! I feel very united with you guys now, at least I might know as much about James as you (provided you were paying attention at Bible study!). The Holiday Club is a few short weeks away and the theme is going to be culture. As a co-ordinator, it is my job to put some flesh on the bones which is our plan ... read more
