South Africa, the southernmost country in Africa, is often thought of as the most advanced sub-Saharan African country. And while that may be true, it does not mean that the country does not have its fair share of problems. In a short video about South Africa, it primarily focused on the distinct lack of availability of clean water. There is so little, that 5 million people have no access to clean drinking water. This is supported by a statistic provided by the World Health Organization, hosted on NationMaster.com, which states that there are only 1,154 cubic meters of renewable water (measured in meters cubed/capita year). This availability of water ranks South Africa as 140th out of 169 listed countries, placing it very nearly at the bottom. Since there is so little clean (or even available) drinking water, much of the population subsists on hand-cranked water pumps which bring out contaminated water. Unfortunately, many people rely on this contaminated water - perhaps most sadly, even schoolchildren - so they regularly suffer ill effects from this, such as nausea and diarrhea.
