In studying India, one of the things we did as a class was watch the short documentary "Born into Brothels", which tracked a group of around ten children who lived in a brothel in the red light district of Calcutta (Kolkata). The children were, unsurprisingly, much like any kid that was born in a more privileged area - curious, hoping towards the future, and very bright. However, the children that were born into these brothels were never given the opportunity to realize their curiosity or intelligence. Sure, they went to a public school, but their futures weren't looking too good - the girls were on the track to becoming escorts themselves, and the boys were heading towards an unknown future.
